The Onakke (oh-NAH-kay) are a fallen civilization of Shandalar ogres. They were once brilliant people, masters of dark arts and artifice, and adept at using the plane's abundant mana to craft artifacts of terrible power. They are far more intelligent than other ogres and have a distinct set of large tusks protruding from their cheekbones.
History
At some point in the past, the Onakke civilization was annihilated by some kind of dark and malevolent spell cast by an unknown source. The massacre took only a night. Years later, the demon Kothophed sent Liliana Vess to retrieve the Chain Veil. The Veil itself is an artifact hidden within the Catacombs of the Onakke. Liliana encountered the vengeful spirit of Kurkesh, creator of the veil, who had killed more than one traveler daring enough to pilfer the Onakke ruins. At first, Liliana assumed the ruined Onakke village was haunted, but she later realized the angry Onakke spirits are bound to the Chain Veil itself, and their voices taunt her whenever she wears the veil.
During New Phyrexia's Invasion of the Multiverse, a group of dormant Onakke was reawakened by the Chain Veil's magic when it seeped from Ravnica to Shandalar through Realmbreaker's Omenpaths.
Trivia
- The monstrous Ursoth that was hunted by Garruk Wildspeaker had a similar appearance as the ancient ogres, and might, therefore, be related.
