Fortification is an artifact type introduced in Future Sight.

Description

A Fortification can be attached to a land following the same rules as an equipment attached to a creature. It uses the fortify keyword, its counterpart to equip.

History

Fortifications were added as a future-shifted twist on Equipment. Darksteel Garrison was the first and only Fortifcation in the game as Mark Rosewater and R&D considered the chance of using the Artifact type in future sets low. Even reprinting Darksteel Garrison was considered unlikely. The biggest problem with Fortification being the limited design space. Cards using the type must differentiate themselves from Auras that enchant lands by incentivizing players to move the Fortification from one land to another. This was compounded by the broader stance on limiting land destruction, meaning Fortifications had to have a low power level.

Seventeen years after its debut, and to much player surprise, Universes Beyond: Fallout added a new Fortification with C.A.M.P..
