Gold is an artifact type first used in Born of the Gods, and later specified as a predefined token in Theros Beyond Death.

Description

Gold can be sacrificed for mana. Unlike Treasure, these artifact tokens don't have to be tapped. This is especially useful when it comes to a mechanic like Improvise where you can tap the Gold tokens to pay for one spell and then sacrifice them afterward for mana for a second spell. However, it is important to note that Gold tokens cannot be sacrificed for mana and tapped to improvise the same spell. Given the prevalence of Treasure over Gold, it's likely that the "double-dipping" for costs was considered difficult enough to track during gameplay to be unwanted for most card designs.

Colorless artifact tokens "named Gold" had existed since Born of the Gods. The cards with this syntax were Gild, King Macar, the Gold-Cursed, and Curse of Opulence, all of which created tokens with the same text as the current version. With the release of Theros Beyond Death, Gold tokens became predefined in the game rules. The description of what a Gold token does now appears in the reminder text instead of in the rules text, and the older Gold token cards received errata.
