After Morgoth's crushing victory at Nirnaeth Arnoediad, the Orcs invaded northern Beleriand and conquered many regions. Many Sindar Elves sought refuge in Cirdan's kingdom of Falas.

After Morgoth's crushing victory at Nirnaeth Arnoediad, the Orcs invaded northern Beleriand and conquered many regions. Many Sindar Elves sought refuge in Cirdan's kingdom of Falas. Morgoth sent a large force to Falas. Although the Elves resisted, all the ports of Falas and Falas itself fell. Many Elves were killed or taken prisoner, while some escaped. Círdan was among the survivors, and taking Gil-galad with him, he fled by ship to the Isle of Balar, where he established a new realm.
