After Sela sacrifices herself to allow Samantha to go free, Samantha's path back to Earth is not very straightforward. She must first cross the area between the two realms, and on her route are great creatures who either demand she answer a riddle or else she be captured or eaten by them. In so doing Samantha is forced to look internally and examine her own life. She eventually passes all the tests and meets with Shang who informs her that she wouldn't have made it if she wasn't a good person. Shang, Nissa and Sela head off in different directions leaving Samantha to guard the Earth.
