In the novel The Hour of the Dragon the Heart of Ahriman is used to resurrect the sorcerer named Xaltotun. The jewel turns out to be the source of power of Xaltotun, after learning this, Conan ventures out to retrieve it and eventually gain possession of it in Stygian temple. With the artifact, Conan will be able to defeat the sorcerer once and for all.
A Popular Fan theory is the heart was once the heart of one of the elephant headed creatures from Yag. It was shown that the "Heart of the Elephant" was an extremely powerful magic item in the Tower of the Elephant, also described as a red jewel.
