The Edge

The Edge is a massive plane surrounding the edge of the Multiverse which consists of billions of solar systems. It was introduced in the Edge of Eternities set.

Description

The Edge, known as the Edge of Eternity or simply as Space to most of its inhabitants, is a massive universe that exists between the greater Multiverse and the infinite expanse beyond it.

The Edge is filled with billions of stars composed of mana, aether, hydrogen, helium, and other trace gasses. Planets form around these stars, with a handful of them capable of sustaining life.

The distance between two star systems is extremely vast, and while sub-lightspeed travel between them is possible, it is highly impractical. Most interstellar travel is done using Eternity Columns constructed by the Pinnacle. Eternity Columns allow ships to travel beyond lightspeed by slipping them in and out of a parallel plane known as the Weft.

The entirety of the Edge has not been mapped, but the shape of the universe can be observed through cutting-edge scientific methods. The Edge has been discovered to be annular (ring-like) in shape.

Observation along the interior arc of observable space - towards the departure point of all matter, space, and time - eventually ends at a chaotic, scrambled barrier of recombinant particles that prevents further observation. This is known colloquially as the Chaos Wall, an unbeknownst to the inhabitants of the Edge the rest of the Multiverse lies beyond it.

Conversely, observation of the exterior arc - towards the expansion of the universe - is seemingly infinite and defies any attempts to quantify it. For a sense of symmetry, the point that observation dies off is known as the Quiet Wall.

History

Millenia ago, the Drix native to the Edge were allied with the Fomori and helped them fight a cosmic war against the Eldrazi. Though the Fomori eventually vanished, the Eldrazi tide was stopped and the Drix continued to hunt down the remaining Eldrazi on the plane.

Several centuries ago, the Pinnacle was founded as an alliance of various species that shared the same system. In their second century of expansion, the Pinnacle encountered the Drix, who taught them the secrets to faster-than-light travel. The Pinnacle has since become the dominant force in the Edge.

• The Celestial Palatinate - A monarchist empire that follows a doctrine of increasing and refining the sum total of the universe

• The Sothera System - A solar system centred around the supervoid (black hole) Sothera, which was originally a star that collapsed billions of years ago after absorbing too much from an interstellar cloud of Aether.
  • Susur Secundi - The closest planet to Sothera. The planet's rocky surface shows signs of a now-extinct civilisation. It is the local headquarters of the Monoists.
  • Kavaron - The twin second-closest planet to Sothera. It was the homeworld of the Kav, but centuries of strip mining the planet for moxite caused it to split in two. The two halves are known as Kavaron Before and Kavaron That Is.
  • Evendo - The twin second-closest planet to Sothera. It was originally a dead world, but debris from the breaking of Kavaron created a verdant environment and awoke hibernating Eumidians.
  • Adagia - The third-closest planet to Sothera. The planet's powerful but steady wind has shaped its flora and fauna to be aerodynamic. It is the system headquarters of the Sunstar Free Company.
  • Uthros - The fourth-closest planet to Sothera. Uthros is a gas giant surrounded by dozens of moons. Beneath its cloudy surface is a core of super-compressed gas researched by the Uthros Combine, an Illvoi science team.
  • Infinite Guideline Station - A space station serving as the main eternity column in and out of the Sothera system.
  • The Garden of Apeiron - An area of space where strange anomalies occur and ships never escape. It is currently located between Uthros and the Wurmwall, but is slowly moving.
  • The Wurmwall - An asteroid belt that marks the outer bounds of the Sothera system. It is inhabited by a variety of gigantic and aggressive species.
• Sigma's Reach
• A strange artifact of (allegedly) the Var, an ancient alien species that had their consciousnesses uploaded
