Bloomburrow Duskmourn: House of Horror Foundations

Duskmourn: House of Horror is the 102nd Magic expansion. It was released on September 27, 2024.

Set details

Duskmourn: House of Horror is top-down designed set themed on Modern Horror and based on the Haunted House trope. It has a completely different tone than the set that precedes it, Bloomburrow. It is inspired by 70s, 80s, and 90s creepy horror as depicted in Slasher films or The Amityville Horror. While being a top-down set, Dusmourn utilizes an overarching enchantment theme with many bottom-up ramifications.

Duskmourn: House of Horror contains 276 regular cards (91 commons, 100 uncommons, 60 rares, 20 mythic rares, 5 basic lands), and includes randomly inserted traditional foil versions of all cards. The regular cards include 5 full-art "Manor" basic lands (#272-276). The Bundle Basics lands are #277-286. A series of alternate art "Lurking Evil" cards in regular frames add a monster to the original art (#287-301). Alternate card frames have a different number than the original version. Cards with the modernistic "Paranormal" Showcase frame are #302-327. Borderless cards are #328-343, and the "Mirror monster" borderless cards (where the monster is seen in a reflection) are #344-350. Highlighting the legendary creatures of the plane and paying homage to horror photography, the "Double Exposure" Showcase cards are #351-367. Extended art rare cards are #368-385. This set is the first to include "Japan Showcase" cards. Cards in this showcase feature art from Japanese artists and illustrators, paying homage to the art styles commonly found in Japanese hobby stores. The card frame elements have been minimized to maximize the art, with no shading behind the text box as found on a borderless card. Japan Showcase cards are available in traditional foil (#386-395) and a new "fractured foil" (#396-405), where the card border has a special foil texture. All Japan Showcase cards are printed at Mythic, which may differ from the rarity of the default printing. The textured foil versions of the "Double Exposure" cards are #406-410, and the promos are #411-417.

Storyline

Duskmourn is set in the world of Duskmourn, which consists of one giant haunted mansion filled with horrors and is ruled by the demonic Valgavoth. The entire set takes place within its eerie walls. Nashi, the son of the Planeswalker Tamiyo, has vanished through a mysterious door. There's only one clue to his whereabouts: a glitchy, warped recording of a new world full of terrors. You'll join the ensemble cast of Niko Aris, Tyvar Kell, Zimone Wola, Kaito Shizuki, and the Wanderer as they fight for their lives on a plane unlike any other.

Duskmourn: House of Horror is the second set in the Dragonstorm Arc. This set features Story Spotlights.

Marketing

Duskmourn is available in Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, four Commander decks and the Duskmourn Bundle. The Bundle's special "Nightmare Edition" was released on October 18th, 2024. It consists of two Collector Boosters and six Play Boosters, and the lands are foil full-art Manor Lands. It also includes a Movie Poster card and three double-sided movie posters. The spindown life counter is glow-in-the-dark. Finally, the Nightmare Bundle contains 1 of 3 Borderless promo cards and 1 of 3 Movie poster–themed cards.

The set also see the return of Welcome decks, last seen with Core Set 2019.

Special Guests

Duskmourn features 10 Special Guests (SPG #64-73). These form The List of the Play Boosters and may be played in Limited games. You'll find a non-foil Special Guests card in 1 out of 64 Play Boosters. Traditional foil Special Guests cards can be found in Collector Boosters.

Japan Showcase

Duskmourn: House of Horror introduces the Japan Showcase cards as additional Collector Booster-exclusive collectables. Each of the ten cards in the showcase (DSK #386-405) has been reimagined by Japanese artists and illustrators and have a special frame and style that pays homage to Japanese hobby shops. Unlike Special Guests they use the standard Duskmourn set code and expansion symbol (). Japan Showcase cards appear only in Collector Boosters. In Japanese Collector Boosters, Japan Showcase cards will always be in Japanese. In non-Japanese Collector Boosters, they will appear in English two thirds of the time and in Japanese one third of the time. One-in-ten Collector Boosters will have a Japan Showcase card (9% traditional foil, 1% fracture foil).

Themes and mechanics

Duskmourn: House of Horror is an "enchantment matters" set.

It introduces a new enchantment type, Rooms. Rooms have two halves, each with their own mana cost. When a Room is cast, its controller chooses which cost to pay, and it initially only has that half's effect. But at any time, the Room's controller can pay the other half's cost to unlock that half and activate its effects.

Rooms are accompanied by the new ability word Eerie, which is a variation on constellation that also triggers when its controller fully unlocks a Room.

The Impending keyword is found exclusively on the Overlord cycle, all of which are notably enchantment creatures. It works similarly to suspend in that it always has a numerical value but the card is placed on the battlefield rather than in exile. When a card is cast for its impending cost, it's put onto the battlefield with time counters equal to its impending value. Until all the counters are removed, it's not a creature.

Survival is a new ability word similar to inspired. It signifies an ability that triggers if the creature with the ability is tapped during your second main phase, representing that they survived the terrors of combat.

The set sees the return of the Delirium mechanic. First appearing in the Shadows over Innistrad block, delirium cares about having four or more card types in your graveyard. As such, the set contains a wide array of card types to synergize with the ability.

Manifest cards also return with a tweak, as Manifest Dread, which allows you to look at the top two cards of your library and manifest one while the other goes to your graveyard.

Ninjutsu appears as a cameo mechanic on Kaito, Bane of Nightmares.

Card types

Besides the debut of the Room enchantment type, Duskmourn introduces the Glimmer and Toy creature types.

The set features the Doctor creature type for the first time outside of a Universes Beyond set, and the first appearance of the Balloon and Clown creature types outside of an Un-set. It features the first-ever non-token card with the Survivor creature type. It also features the second ever enchantment land.
