Shinare (deity)

This article is about the deity Shinare, if you are looking for the planet of the same name see here.

Overview

Shinare fosters interaction and enterprise as a way of prompting exploration and travel in order to unite disparate communities so that they might come together and associate with each other. During times of war and unrest, Shinare encourages diplomacy and negotiation to ensure a continued state of communication even between hated foes. In periods of recovery, her interests are served as trade routes are re-opened and cities are flooded with people seeking the goods offered by merchants and craftsmen.

Shinare is somewhat of a fickle goddess, and cares little for the motives of those who do business with others so long as the interaction is balanced. Because of this, slavery and mercenary activity are just as valid to her as any other industry. Abuse, unfair practices, and theft, on the other hand, will incur the wrath of Shinare for they violate the spirit of interaction that she champions.

Shinare's companion is Sirrion, the god of creative fire. While Shinare is practical and pragmatic, Sirrion is a dreamer and an artist, and the two deities complement each other. While their relationship is far from stable, they work to make the world and its people prosperous.

Description

Shinare has no preference for a particular gender or race, and is as likely to appear as a male dwarf as she is a female elf. She can assume various forms, but typically appears as a rotund and wealthy merchant, richly attired and always gesturing with his or her hands. She also often appears as an elderly accountant, factor, or legal officer carrying a stack of contracts and legal papers, and wearing small spectacles.

While her preferred forms are generally older, plump, gregarious and well dressed, she sometimes assumes a form that is younger and more outgoing, typically a fresh-faced street vendor with a gleam in her eye and a purse full of coins. Shinare also appears as a road-worn tinker, or caravan merchant with farseeing eyes and a map at the ready. Shinare's forms almost always incorporate or wear some kind of precious metal, such as gold or silver.

Realm

Krynnspace cosmology

In the cosmology of Krynnspace, Shinare maintains a realm within the Hidden Vale, alongside the other Gods of Balance.

Great Wheel cosmology

In the Great Wheel cosmology, Shinare resides within her realm, known as the Scales of Wealth, which forms part of the shared outer planar realm known as the Marketplace Eternal, which is located on the Concordant Domain of the Outlands. Shinare has joined forces with similarly-minded deities from other pantheons, and together they have established a common realm known as the Marketplace Eternal on the Outlands. She currently shares this realm with Sera of Aebrynis, Waukeen of Toril, and Zilchus of Oerth. Due to the central location of the Outlands, many planar merchants and planeswalkers find the Marketplace Eternal to be a convenient stop on their trade routes across the planes, and the Marketplace has even begun to compete with Tradegate as the premier commercial hub on the Outlands.

The Marketplace Eternal is nothing more than a huge bazaar that stretches for miles in every direction. Impromptu tents and market stalls are set up wherever the merchants please, and are only loosely organised by speciality, if that. The market stalls compete for space with gambling halls, drinking establishments and hucksters of all sorts which are all set up indiscriminately. The Marketplace is a place of splendour, but is also very, very confusing.

The Marketplace is divided into four separate quarters: one for each of the various deities involved. Waukeens quarter is known as the House of Barter, Shinare's quarter is known as the Scales of Wealth, Zilchus's quarter is known as the Seat of Luxury, and Sera's quarter is known as the House of Resolve.

Worship

Priests of Shinare are industrious and they work hard to amass wealth and prestige. However, they must not become greedy, for that way lies the dark path of Hiddukel. Because they wish to better the communities within which they live, Shinare's priests are often the principal founders of businesses across the sphere. Because they can bring wealth and prosperity to a community, Shinare's priests are often highly respected.

In Spelljammer

Shinare is a member of the Gods of Balance and is considered native to Krynnspace.
