Brokenbank is a coastal settlement located on Brokenbank island in the Menagerie Coast of Wildemount, and is one of the eight cities comprising the Clovis Concord. The town is important to the trade business of the Menagerie Coast, being its first major entry port and trade junction. Brokenbank serves as customs for incoming trade ships and provides opportunity for those ships to resupply before they head to the mainland.

Because it lacks the "strong cultural identity" of the mainland city-states of the Menagerie Coast, Brokenbank is not recognized by the Clovis Concord as an "official" city. The town is run by the Portcaller Mazin Fahreed, since only the official seven cities are governed by a marquis.

Description

Brokenbank is a muddy and rainy village located on the island of the same name. It maintains docks and a port that consists of a semi-circular main street that follows the shape of the inlet on its northern coast.

Points of interest

  • Pawn shop: The pawn shop doubles as Brokenbank's general store.
  • Apothecary: The apothecary is owned by the sea elf Aldageam.

Demographics

In 835 PD, Brokenbank has a population of 1,520, 74% of which are human, 9% tabaxi, 6% dwarves, and 11% of which come from other races. There is also a "constantly shifting clientele" of sailors and merchants who visit the island.

Government and defense

The current portcaller is a male tabaxi named Mazin Fahreed, who is a marquis in duties, if not in name. Fahreed leads a garrison of personal zhelezo soldiers that maintains peace, aids port inspectors, and cross-references all documentation to maintain the reputations of Brokenbank and its shipping guilds. There is also a small militia of volunteers, primarily fishermen and ex-military locals, who can defend the settlement.

Fahreed is often left out of Concord business, and his governance is sometimes threatened by the power struggles of business leaders on the island.

Commerce and organizations

Other than the business of serving as a primary point of entry to the Clovis Concord, most of Brokenbank's commerce is hospitality — brothels and taverns — for the many sailors who pass through, often after a long ocean voyage. The larger businesses of Brokenbank manage the internal commerce, as the town is too small for merchant guilds. While those arriving from foreign ports may bring more uncommon goods, typically only standard supplies are available.

Religion

There are shrines in Brokenbank, but no larger temples.

Law and crime

Sailors who arrive with goods often attempt to engage in skimming, which is typically overlooked; a certain amount of skimming is considered a normal part of the shipping business. However, petty theft, particularly theft from other ships in port, is strictly forbidden and merits serious punishment from the local Zhelezo.

The Clovis Concord usually executes captured members of the Revelry and straps them to the rocks outside of the settlement to serve as a warning.

The adventure hook For the Myriad in the Explorer's Guide to Wildemount hinges on active agents of the Myriad in Brokenbank seeking blackmail material against Portcaller Mazin Fahreed.

Music

One known song native to Brokenbank was a folk ballad titled the " Song of Dashilla the Dreadful ", which described the sea fury Dashilla.

" Dark Waters " (2x98)

When Mighty Nein member Caduceus Clay visited Seafloor's Bounty in Nicodranas, he inquired of shopkeeper Sheila Bobsnopper about a magical Wind Fan on display. Bobsnopper recalled that the fan was sold to her seven or eight months prior by a fisherman named Gerald Kingsman who occasionally traveled from Brokenbank to sell "all sorts of strange findings".
