Geographical knowledge in the Northern Realms and the Nilfgaardian Empire is not as widespread as in the modern era of our own planet. Commoners and elites alike often refer to lands beyond their geographical knowledge as beyond the seas, grouping together countries such as Zerrikania and Zangvebar that are in fact further from each other than Novigrad is from Nilfgaard of the Golden Towers.
Orions were invented in an unspecified country "beyond the seas" before they were adopted by Nilfgaardians.
