The kingdoms located in the mountains' foothills, such as Kovir and Poviss, stayed content to mine the vast mineral reserves (including gold, silver, and platinum) found throughout the valleys and peaks, rather than expand further north in exploration.

For ages these regions were inhabited by griffins who posed a real danger to early human settlers. The problem was solved by a school of witchers wearing medallions depicting an Eagle - or, what one could say later, a Griffin.
