Its border is marked by the Gwenllech River and makes up the northern part of Kaedwen, stopping before the Dragon Mountains. The margraves here had hoped to expand the kingdom's domain into the mountains themselves, but despite numerous incursions into the valleys, nothing came of it. Thus, they continued to be stuck with calling their region "cismontane" instead of "tramontane".
The region itself made most of its wealth by mining salt, though was also known to mine silver, nickel, zinc, lead, and lapis lazuli. However, by 1229, most of these mines had dried up.
