Tron
The Tron Universe is a science-fiction media franchise centered on "the Grid," a series of neon-lit digital virtual realities where computer programs exist as sentient, humanoid entities. Created by Steven Lisberger and Bonnie MacBird, the series explores the interaction between human "Users" and their digital creations, often featuring gladiatorial contests like high-speed lightcycle races and lethal disc wars. The franchise is celebrated for its groundbreaking visual effects and electronic soundtracks, notably including works by Daft Punk and Nine Inch Nails.
The narrative timeline spans three feature films: the original Tron (1982), Tron: Legacy (2010), and most recently, Tron: Ares (2025). While earlier installments focused on humans being digitized into the computer, Tron: Ares—released in October 2025—reversed the formula by following a sophisticated AI program named Ares (Jared Leto) as it crosses over into the physical world. Despite its visual ambition and the return of Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn, Ares was considered a box office disappointment, grossing roughly $142 million against a $200 million budget, leaving the future of the franchise on the big screen uncertain as of early 2026.
