(Death and ominous secrets regarding the occultist Übel Staal.)

In the city of Farschviller in France, close to the border to the duchy Pfalz, lie the popular parlour of ideas and entertainment of Madame Holbach. It is not as well-known as Madame Geoffrin's in Paris with regulars as Jaques Rousseau or the matematician Jean La Rond, but nevertheless a nexus for important and successful parlour tyrants, aristocrats, mysticians and literary people. A parlour where conversation has been honed to a beatiful art and where you can amuse yourself with carnal pleasures as night falls. This is a playground for philosophers, scientists, teologicians, administrators yet to become famous and to members of secret orders whose existance has yet to reach Paris. In an atmosphere of rollicking madness the most remarkable and noteworthy opinions are echoed between the walls of the parlour, eagerly accompanied by shrill laughter and false accusations.

After a bewildering night, to say the least, the characters are offered to investigate the death of the famous occultist Übel Staal, to sort out a verbal dispute beween three gentlemen that have been going on for close to a decade. Plenty of rumours circulate about how Übel died, rumours that have caused people to speculate about both werewolves and secret societies. Some say that Übel just fell from his horse and broke his neck. An apperently easy mission suddenly offers supernatural - as well a human - beasts, shrouded personalities and ominous secrets.

The book contains one mission and a detailed description of the small town Koblenstadt.
