Arkol was a scholar of the Argivian University, author of the prefaces of each chapter in the Gathering Dark and the Eternal Ice. History Arkol attempted to analyze past events through the lens of a distanced historian.

Arkol attempted to analyze past events through the lens of a distanced historian. However, he made several mistakes and wrong assumptions, such as thinking that Jodah was either a family name, a title, or several different people with the same name, rather than the same immortal man. Arkol also wrongly assumed that Marit Lage was a planeswalker, and that Freyalise was fully human.
