Activities
He was in the battle of Falme, but considered the Battle of Altara to be worse. He rode under Kennar Miraj in the attack against Rand al'Thor's forces. Miraj sent him to fetch a morat'torm scouting report. Miraj's urgency was such that he sent Varek on foot even though it could (and did) cost Varek sei'taer because Miraj did not wish to waste time finding a horse for Varek.
Varek's report was:
The enemy is less than five miles due east, my Lord Captain-General, marching in our direction. They are deployed in five columns spaced approximately one mile apart.
— Varek to Kennar Miraj on the advance of Rand al'Thor's forces during the Battle of Altara.
Later, Varek witnessed a hundred Taraboner lancers defeated by a single Asha'man, with those who didn't flee quickly enough being literally "ripped to shreds."
En route to report to Banner-General Chianmai, Varek killed a man, likely a Cairhienin under Dalthanes Annallin, in battle with the forces of Dalthanes, Sunamon Haellin, and Gregorin Panar den Lushenos. He regretted the death of the man's bay which he perceived to be superior to his own white-footed dun. Varek then discovered a dozen Altaran lancers and intended to assumed command but they were quickly eliminated by the crossbowmen of the Legion of the Dragon. Shortly thereafter, he discovered some Seanchan-aligned Westlander soldiers, a sul'dam with her damane Zakai, and the corpse of Chianmai. A Taraboner reported to Varek that the damane's "lightnings" had fallen among the Seanchan forces after engaging an Illianer force.
Varek assumed command and ordered a retreat, for which he was likely promoted despite fearing that failure would end with him in custody of the Seekers for Truth.
