Born in Byroden, she and her older twin brother Vax'ildan were raised there by their mother Elaina until they were taken to live in the elven city of Syngorn at the direction of their father, Syldor Vessar. She and Vax'ildan were unhappy, and left in their early adulthood to be on their own. In their travels, Vex'ahlia rescued a bear cub, Trinket, gaining a loyal animal companion.
During her adventures with Vox Machina, she became the wielder of the legendary bow Fenthras to fight against the Chroma Conclave and earned the blessing of Pelor, becoming the Champion of Pelor, to face Vecna. After her marriage with Percival de Rolo she took his surname and became Lady Vex'ahlia de Rolo. In later years, she became a member of the Tal'Dorei Council and had five children.
Intro
"Like so many half-elves, Vex'ahlia has spent most of her life suffering the cool reception of a people who don't fully accept her.
Born of a human mother and an elven father —who only later in life took an interest in their existence—, Vex'ahlia and her twin brother Vax'ildan quickly realized the only people they could truly rely on in this world were each other.
It was at the age of ten when the two were taken from their mother, and brought to live in Syngorn, the isolated elven city for which their father was an ambassador. He quietly took them in, but always kept an icy distance, and after too many years of disdainful looks, the pair decided to leave his indifference behind, and set out on their own.
Vax took to the cities, stealing small trinkets and learning the ways of the thief, while Vex kept to the woods. She preferred the isolation. Always the keen observer, she learned to hunt and to track, to spy, and to shoot. And through a series of fateful events, earned herself a companion in the form of a bear—her own stolen Trinket—to fight alongside her and protect her fiercely. Also, he is adorable—and gives expert massages."
Appearance
Vex'ahlia, like her twin brother Vax'ildan, is a twenty-eight-year-old half-elf with hazel eyes. She is identical in appearance to Vax, albeit two inches shorter than him which would make her about 5'9". She wears her long, dark brown hair in a thick braid, which is usually accompanied with blue feathers. The feathers were a gift from Vax so he could help her through a dark period of her life and she eventually gave them back by braiding them into his hair during his resurrection ritual.
After joining the Slayer's Take, Vex has the brand of the guild on her right arm.
As of 843 PD Vex'ahlia still looks as charming and athletic as in her youth, and despite the years, her half-elven lineage makes her look in her thirties, although she does have some gray hairs. She had a black feather behind her ear instead of a blue one, probably a reference to her twin brother.
Personality
Compared to Vax, Vex is the more pragmatic of the twins. She is very deceptive and can usually bluff her way through various social encounters. Her charisma has also made her good at haggling.
Her tendency to haggle stems from her frugality. Her frugal nature is the result of Vax and herself having to fend for themselves during their teenage years. Unofficially, she is the treasurer for Vox Machina, and often only gives cryptic answers when questioned by the group about how much gold they have.
But beneath her flirtatious attitude, self-confidence, and outgoing exterior lay a girl who feels broken and unwanted. This may be a symptom of her upbringing in Syngorn, where she and Vax had been judged not only due to their status as half-elves, but also because they were bastard children of their ambassador father. Compared to her brother, Vex was much more affected by the elves' treatment of her. As such, she developed a mentality where she would constantly try to make herself look like she came from money so that people would respect her. She will take to heart any insults people with wealth and status make towards her and has a tendency to dislike someone if they seem like they are judging her. Such behavior has led to people assuming she was obsessed with wealth. Only a handful of people, like Percy, have ever truly known the kind of person she was.
One of Vex's personal challenges was to focus less on resentment and vengeance, and more on forgiveness and growth, but she often found it difficult to remember in the moment, which is why she wrote "sinaeth," the Elvish word for "forgive," on her bow, where she would see it every time she took a shot.
Vex'ahlia's alignment was originally neutral good, just like Keyleth and Scanlan, but became chaotic neutral, like Grog and Tiberius, due to many behaviors and actions culminating in the theft of Gern Blanston's flying broom and then lying about it. After a long while, due to having reflected on her choices and making an effort to change herself, her alignment changed once more—this time to chaotic good—after showing genuine concern for two enslaved aasimar and wanting to save them.
Background
Vex, along with her brother Vax, was born in the humble village of Byroden due to the union of a human woman named Elaina and an elven man named Syldor Vessar. The twins lived with Elaina for the first ten years of their life before they were sent to live in Syngorn, where their father lived. While there, they underwent education in various subjects, as well as combat training. During these classes they both learned the Abyssal language, apparently at their father's insistence.
After several years of scorn from the Syngornian elves, the twins set off on their own. They returned to Byroden, only to see their childhood home destroyed and their mother gone. Upon learning that a dragon was responsible for the destruction, Vex'ahlia spent the next few years of her life studying about dragons in the chance that should she find the wyrm that killed Elaina, she would be able to exact revenge on them alongside her brother. Vax sharpened his skills and daggers as a rogue, whereas Vex honed her prowess as a ranger.
Vex found Trinket after being kidnapped by poachers. She escaped the cage they stuffed her in and killed the man and woman who took her. She went up to the half-dead bear the poachers had captured and decided to put the noble beast out of its misery. Only afterward did she notice the bear cub squirming beneath his now dead mother. She took the cub with her back to her and her brother's camp, not telling him what happened or providing an explanation for the bear cub other than "You’re always finding trinkets to take with you… well, I wanted one of my own." She took it upon herself to raise the bear and Trinket has been unquestionably loyal ever since.
Vox Machina Origins
Series One
Vex'ahlia and her twin brother Vax'ildan were in the K'tawl Swamp near Stilben to investigate a possible curse. After the twins took down a shark-speaker, Keyleth suddenly appeared and offered to heal Vax's wounds. The twins were confused by the exuberant druid, who had never heard of half-elves being mistreated before.
Back in Stilben, the twins interrogated an alchemist named Zeth, but he refused to talk. They were ambushed by assassins as soon as they left his shop. The twins hid in the sewers to watch over the shop, and when Zeth left, they stalked him to a sewer station, where Grog and Scanlan had just broken in. The twins attacked them on sight, but the two duos had to join forces when they were all attacked by a group of assassins, then Iselda, who entered through a magic mirror. During the fight, Keyleth arrived with her friend Tiberius, and they joined the battle. When Keyleth suggested all six of them group up to reach their common goal, Vax'ildan and Vex'ahlia refused and left on their own.
Shortly afterward, Iselda kidnapped Vax'ildan by pulling him inside a mirror right in front of Vex'ahlia. Out of options, she called on the help of the others to help her rescue Vax. Scanlan's group turned her down, but Keyleth was eager to help. She followed Vex to the outskirts of town and was introduced to Trinket, who had been hiding in the forest. The trio then headed for the docks in search of Vax and ran again into the others. They all witnessed an explosion as Vax'ildan jumped out of a hole in the side of a ship, where he was being held captive.
The group decided to work together this time, and boarded the Mockingbird. They fought their way to Iselda as well as the source of the poison that has been plaguing the inhabitants of Stilben. They managed to kill her, stop a strange ritual, and escape through the previously made hole in the side of the ship. Afterward, they all headed to a tavern together.
Series Two
While tracking the whereabouts of their friend Grog, the party that would one day become Vox Machina was directed to the Trickfoot household in Westruun, where they met Pike, who helped them rescue Grog from a lich. Later, the party had to split to find ingredients for a ritual to save Grog from the lich attempting to possess his body.
Vex'ahlia went with Vax'ildan and Grog to the Frostweald in search of the heart of a nymph. The team encountered basilisks on their way there, and Vex'ahlia was petrified in their fight, but Vax'ildan figured out that she could be cured by basilisk's blood. When the group encountered the nymph, she befriended Grog and brought him with her inside her pond for a while, and he refused to explain what happened when he resurfaced with the heart they had come to get.
When the entire group reunited, the other three were accompanied by Percival de Rolo, who helped them with the ritual. Vex first spoke of him as a stray they had picked up, but seemed impressed by his gunslinger skill when they fought together to keep the possessed Grog inside the ritual circle.
Series Three
Vex'ahlia was saved from being frozen solid by Skysunder when Vax'ildan jumped in front of her and was frozen instead. She and the rest of Vox Machina took down the white dragon, freeing Vax and the frozen citizens of Westruun.
" The Story of Vox Machina " (Sx06) & other pre-stream events
When the party first met Percival de Rolo and liberated him from his jail cell, he gave Vex all his money, which amounted to 500 gold.
Upon first arriving in Emon, Vex and Vax were briefly reunited with Syldor, the latter visiting the city for diplomatic reasons. The conversation was frosty, and the twins discovered that they now have a half-sister: Velora Vessar.
Trinket was nearly killed when Grog attempted to disarm a room full of traps by hitting the bear on his backside with the broad side of his axe, causing Trinket to charge straight into the traps, catching all of them. Vex was very angry with the goliath afterwards.
With a well-aimed shot, Vex castrated one of the two trolls that were "attacking" Tiberius. Percy shot off the other's genitals.
During the collapse of the Ivory Tower, Vex'ahlia attempted to use a rug as a parachute, only for it to flip underneath her and reveal itself to be a Carpet of Flying.
Epilogues
" The Search For Bob " (Sx45)
At the end of their search for Grog and Bob, Vex'ahlia mentioned that she was nauseous and did not want to eat, implying that she had been pregnant during both that adventure and the fight against Vecna.
The Chronicles of Exandria - The Legend of Vox Machina Volume II
If rumors are to be trusted, months after returning from Pandemonium Vex'ahlia briefly saw the spirit of her brother after giving birth to Vesper Elaina de Rolo, her first daughter with Percy.
" Dalen's Closet " (Sx47)
About a year after the defeat of Vecna, Percy and Vex'ahlia had an official wedding in Dalen's Closet, bringing their friends, some honorable guests and their baby daughter, Vesper Elaina. She chose Taryon as her Man of Honor, and spent the day before the reception making sure everyone involved was doing their part. During the dinner, everyone began to doze off and fell unconscious, and Vex and Percy were taken away by humanoids dressed in black.
Vex and Percy came to consciousness with hands bound together behind them and shackled to their ankles, on the edge of a cliff dropping a few hundred feet into the ocean below. Sylas Briarwood revealed himself as the one behind this, claiming that he was there to exact revenge on them for killing his beloved Delilah, then threw them both from the cliff and into the ocean, where the heavy manacles dragged them down deeper and deeper. Percival managed to free himself, but could not carry Vex'ahlia with him, and swam to the surface to call for help. Vex'ahlia continued to sink, and eventually, drowned.
The rest of the group eventually caught up to them, and Vex'ahlia was brought to shore, were Pike successfully cast Revivify. They all headed back on the cliff to confront Silas, and Vex'ahlia activated the blessing of Pelor, sunlight emanating from her and hurting the vampire. Pike cast Spiritual Weapon to create a bow for Vex, she eradicated his mist form, destroying Sylas permanently.
Since everyone was there, the group agreed to have the ceremony immediately, on the cliffside. Just as Pike is about to pronounce them husband and wife, Scanlan broke in to ask if he can offer them a wish: that Vex's brother would be able to speak to her for just a moment on her wedding day. He cast Wish, and Vax'ildan appeared. He spoke slowly, showing little emotion, and hesitated when Vex hugged him before hugging back. He told her he was safe and always with them, and the his love would never dim. Vex then urged him to Keyleth, to which he spoke briefly before disappearing again.
Post Campaign
As revealed in " The Chapter Closes " (1x115), Vex built a statue to Trinket in Whitestone and a yearly festival was established to celebrate both bears and feats of engineering. She and Percy traveled often, but returned to Whitestone long enough for the birth of their four other children: Wolfe, Leona, Vax'ildan and Gwendolyn. She also trained Cassandra to become not only a leader of Whitestone, but a protector as well.
Vex never stopped trying to contact her lost brother. Though she never succeeded, she did notice the population of ravens in Whitestone increasing over the years.
Vex'ahlia was eventually elected as Master of Commerce on the Tal'Dorei Council, a position she was still filling as of 843 PD. This earned her the title "Coinmistress". She frequently teleported between Whitestone and Emon to fulfill her many duties, and occasionally went out with the Grey Hunters to fight off threats.
Campaign Three: Bells Hells
Following Bertrand Bell's demise in 843 PD, his friends sent his body into the care of Vex and Percy, due to his connection with Vox Machina. Lord Ariks Eshteross, Bertrand's employer, wrote an accompanying letter explaining the details and contracted a skyship to take Bertrand to Whitestone. Twenty two days later, the skyship returned with a letter of gratitude from Vex'ahlia, noting Betrand to have been a man of deep integrity, courageous heart, and boundless generosity.
Some weeks later, when Bells Hells arrived in Whitestone (with Keyleth's help), Vex encountered them when she returned from hunting with her twin children, Wolfe and Leona. She was friendly towards them, specially when she knew they were the ones that sent Bertrand's corpse, and when she discovered that they were trying to resurrect Laudna, she showed her compassion, being willing to help in the process with her own jewels, possibly due to guilt over the fact that Laudna had been chosen by the Briarwoods to take Vex's place on the Sun Tree. She went with the group to Pike's home while to look for a way of separating Delilah from Laudna's soul, and she loaned Orym a magical sword to help him in the mission into Delilah's domain. When Laudna was restored to her quasi-life, Vex told her she felt somewhat responsible for what had happened to her, and gave her a ring of protection to help her in the future.
In the immediate aftermath of the chaos unleashed during the apogee solstice, Vex stayed in Emon due to her responsibilities as a member of the Council. However, she was present in Vasselheim for the meeting of the Exandrian Accord to plan their strategy following the Ruidian forces' successful invasion of the Tishtan excavation site around the Malleus Key. There, Chetney told her she was absolutely stunning and asked if she was taken, while Laudna revealed that she now had Delilah Briarwood imprisoned within her chest. Vex was taken aback by this but accepted their explanation that it was safe, then wanted to know if Laudna could torture her somehow.
Vox Machina all came together once more to participate in the Exandrian Accord's assault against the Malleus Key, both to provide cover for Bells Hells and the Mighty Nein's missions on Ruidus, and to try to rescue Vax'ildan from his imprisonment in an orb held within the Key itself. She and Percy said goodbye to their children, informing them that their mission could bring their uncle back. When they arrived to the Hellcatch Valley Vex'ahlia activated her Blessing of Pelor and encouraged the troops with her light as the battle started; as their skyship was crashing she also helped minimize the damage, and even saved a young arcanist using her broom. As she and her friends got closer to the Malleus Key (without much stealth, due to the radiant aura surrounding the ranger), Vox Machina started unleashing their own attacks, and Vex'ahlia used Fenthras to cause devastation with one single arrow. When they faced Ozo Cruth, the Sunder King, he chose Vex as his main target; shortly after she released Trinket to distract the Reiloran, the Weave Mind, through strange tower-like devices, used their powers to force the ranger to crash with her broom, and the Sunder King jumped towards her. With his Frenzied Wrath, he attacked her repeatedly, and although her Blessing repelled him with holy radiance, he kept going until he killed her; in her last moments Lady Vex'ahlia de Rolo thought of her children, convinced that Vesper would take care of Whitestone for her, and extended one hand towards Percy, asking him to save Vax'ildan. She, however, was brought back a few seconds later thanks to Pike's Divine Intervention, and saw her husband attacking Ozo with silent wrath; after a few moments the ranger attacked the Reiloran warrior too, but he defended himself, just to be killed by Grog shortly after.
Vex killed the last hostile enemy (Vorak, the Sunder King's bane worm), making a tree grow through its head that Cerkonos hit with lightning, and then faced her brother: the Champion of Ravens confirmed that he was still connected to the Matron of Death, but after some conversation the goddess herself let him know that he had one night of freedom to be with his loved ones. Vex'ahlia then grabbed him and walked with him and the rest of Vox Machina as they Traveled via Plants back to Whitestone, as she told him about her children. Vax was gone by the morning, and Vex was somewhat surprised he hadn't spent the night with Keyleth. Vox Machina was summoned to Vasselheim by Allura and saw the Rites of Catatheosis and the breaking of the Divine Gate. After watching Ashton Greymoore plummet lifeless to the ground, Vex offered one of her diamonds for Pike's Resurrection spell, but the spell failed. During the the council discussing the Ruidian refugees, Percival and Vex'ahlia offered to accept some of them in Whitestone. When Opal approached them, recognizing Vex from her statue in Byroden, and started sharing ideas about how to show Ruidians the culture of their common hometown, Vex and Percy invited the young warlock to Whitestone to talk more about it.
In the next years, Percy and Vex began looking toward retirement and preparing their children to take over the duties involved in governing Whitestone, which prospered due to residuum's increased value due to the change in magic after the departure of the gods. Both she and Percival intended to gradually step away from their duties and travel to their various vacation homes around Exandria and Ruidus.
Last years
Lady Vex'ahlia was widowed at some point before 911 PD. Upon Percy's death, she resumed her former position as Baroness of the Third House of Whitestone, bearing that title and still serving as Grand Mistress of the Grey Hunt for a time.
Season One
In the animated adaptation, Vex'ahlia had the ability to sense when a dragon was nearby. She felt a sharp pain and heard a shrill noise when she first met the Tal'dorei Council, and later while facing Brimscythe. This caused Vox Machina to suspect that Gregory Fince worked with the dragon. However, it was General Krieg who triggered her senses: he served as the human disguise of the blue dragon.
Percival de Rolo
Vex and Percy have a history of casually flirting with each other, she more so than him. Percy also tends to make custom arrows for her. Over time, Vex developed genuine feelings for the gunslinger, as proven when she rejected Saundor and his advances, claiming that "[her] heart is someone else's", in addition to kissing him during his resurrection ritual. After Percy kissed her in the forest outside Draconia, their relationship soon grew into that of being lovers, even leading to their becoming intimate with each other for the first time prior to the siege of Emon.
Taryon Darrington
Vex and Taryon quickly became best friends, bonding over their similar personalities and having terrible fathers. When Vex'ahlia had her house built in Whitestone, she saved a room for Tary to live in. Tary helped her create her white dragon armor, and was her best man at their wedding.
Trinket
Vex and Trinket became companions when she accidentally trusted poachers too much and ended up being captured by them. She killed the poachers, put the dying large female bear out of her misery, and saved her young cub. They have been together since.
Vax'ildan
Vex and Vax usually work together when scouting and ambushing opponents. They haven't been separated for very long since birth, at least until after the events of " Hubris " (1x17), where they are forced to work with different groups of people.
Syldor Vessar
Vex'ahlia held a lot of resentment for her father for a long time after he took her and her brother away from their mother so that they be raised in Syngorn, where she was constantly ridiculed. She once told him that if she could remove all of his blood from her veins, she would. However, Vex'ahlia later made an effort to make peace with Syldor, and began working with him after she became Whitestone's ambassador to Syngorn.
Quests
Vex'ahlia, along with her brother Vax'ildan, was on a quest to kill Thordak, the ancient red dragon that killed their mother when it destroyed their home town of Byroden. This has since been fulfilled due to Vax slaying Thordak during the siege of Emon.
Years ago, Vex'ahlia was stalked by someone and marked for death by the Clasp. Vax dealt with the Clasp but the client is still out there. She has expressed an interest in finding out who that was and why they wanted her.
