Tom was born in TA 2980 (SR 1380), four years before Rosie. He was the eldest son of Farmer Cotton. He had four younger siblings; Rosie Cotton, Wilcome (Jolly) Cotton, Bowman (Nick) Cotton, and Carl (Nibs) Cotton.
He played a significant role in the Battle of Bywater and fought alongside his father. Afterwards, he married Marigold, who was three years his junior. She was as well, the younger sister of Samwise Gamgee, who also just so happened to marry Tom's younger sister Rosie. He served briefly as Deputy-Mayor of Michel Delving when Sam went to Gondor.
Because the Cottons were so close to the Gamgees, and Sam was the same age as Tom, you could expect that they were good friends growing up, and later on in life.
