Pre-stream

Simon lived with his mother, who ran the Softsky Bakery in Westruun. When Simon went missing for a few weeks, Elowen asked Vox Machina to help find him. They found him in the hands of the Dread Emperor, along with many other children kidnapped from across Tal'Dorei. The Dread Emperor was holding them within his desolate, extraplanar home, where Vox Machina defeated him and returned most of the missing children to their families, reuniting Simon and Elowen. Vax'ildan named his serpent belt "Simon" in honor of the young boy he helped rescue.

Arc 3: The Chroma Conclave

Years after, when the Chroma Conclave attacked Westruun, which was subsequently overrun by Grog's former herd, Elowen and her son became refugees. They sought aid in Kymal, but that small town could not accommodate all the refugees, leaving Elowen, Simon, and others to fend for themselves.

Vox Machina travelled from Westruun to the Frostweald in mist form, when they noticed a refugee camp from overhead. When they landed and investigated, Vax'ildan and Vex'ahlia noticed Elowen and Simon, instantly recognizing them from their quest to rescue the children from the Dread Emperor. When Vax encountered Simon, he showed the boy his serpent belt and explained that he named the serpent after young Simon. Simon Brist was both excited to see the wondrous serpent Simon and terrified at the perceived threat of a snake attack, freezing when it was draped around his neck. Keyleth sent Elowen, Simon, and some wounded refugees to Whitestone using Transport via Plants.
