Personality

A talented carver of wooden tools and furniture, Wilhand was a joyful (if slightly forgetful) old gnome. Sweet and welcoming in disposition, he was regarded as a treasure in the neighborhood.

Background

Wilhand chose to break away from his family's history of thievery after receiving a divine dream from Sarenrae. He taught his descendants the ways of Sarenrae and ultimately was responsible for Pike choosing the lifestyle of a cleric.

Once, Wilhand was nearly killed by a group of goliath barbarians from the Herd of Storms. One member of the herd, Grog, chose to protect the old gnome. This decision would have cost Grog his life had Wilhand not gone to Pike to ask for her help in healing the goliath. This experience resulted in Pike and Grog forming a close friendship and choosing to travel together.

When the Chroma Conclave attacked Westruun, followed swiftly by the invasion of the Herd of Storms, Wilhand hid in a secret cellar beneath his kitchen floor. During his isolation, he distilled bourbon to cope with this situation.

Vox Machina found him safe but a little bit tipsy. As they mentioned the past dragon attack Wilhand was surprised and terrified but was relieved by Pike's dragon killing record.

Later, when Pike addressed the survivors of Westruun in a public square, Wilhand excitedly hopped around, beaming with pride, to see his great-great-granddaughter up on the stage as a savior of the city.

" One Year Later... " (1x95)

A time of relative quiet fell across Exandria after the fall of the Chroma Conclave and Wilhand had several visitors during that year. Pike stopped by and found that since her last visit, Wilhand had been visited by Master Quall who retrieved Fassbender as well as the control circlet for the golem. Wilhand also managed to hire some local help in repairing his home after the attack from Umbrasyl. After receiving some money from Pike, the Trickfoot family members Ogden, JB, Astra, and Johann also visited Wilhand in an effort to locate her.

" Family Matters " (1x96)

Keyleth brought Vex'ahlia, Pike, and Taryon to Westruun for a visit with Wilhand. As he prepared tea, they asked him about the curse that Ogden claimed to have dreamed about. Wilhand explained that he got away from the Trickfoot lifestyle when he was in his early 40s, but returned to take Pike away from them when he saw something special about her to raise her as a member of the church of Sarenrae. He mentioned he knew of Theobold Trickfoot and that his death had been under mysterious circumstances, but he chalked it up to the Trickfoots leading dangerous lives.

Wilhand also went into further detail about his visit from Master Quall (describing him as “extremely forceful”) and spoke more about the folks who helped repair his home. When he learned of Pike’s many feats across Exandria, including rebuilding a lost temple in Vasselheim to Sarenrae, he praised her for making the Lady of the Everlight proud. When offered more baked goods before departing, he mentioned he needed to cut back on account of his diabetes, which runs in the family.

" The Chapter Closes " (1x115)

Years after Vox Machina's defeat of Vecna, Wilhand died of old age and Pike inherited his home in Westruun. Since Wilhand had passed away before Pike proposed to Scanlan, Scanlan left some flowers at his grave.

Legacy

After his death, his great-great-granddaughter Pike inherited his home and moved into it.

Pike and Scanlan Shorthalt had two children, one of which they named Wilhand'ildan, partially after Wildhand.

The Legend of Vox Machina

In the past, Wilhand's village is raided by the Herd of Storms. Wilhand hid in his own house before he is cornered by Grog Strongjaw. As Wilhand pleaded for his life, Grog eyed his locket containing an image of himself and Pike, causing him to hesitate. As Zanror subsequently joined him and attempted to kill Wilhand himself, Grog acted in his defense and knocked down his cousin before escorting Wilhand to the village outskirts. As Wilhand promised to one day repay his mercy, they are confronted by Kevdak and Zanror. Grog's uncle was enraged that he would betray his cousin for one elderly gnome and demanded he bring him Wilhand's to prove his loyalty. Grog refused and held off Zanror when he charged at Wilhand, ordering the gnome to flee. Wilhand would later return with Pike to find Grog badly beaten by Kevdak and left for dead. As Pike healed Grog, she expressed her gratitude for saving her grandfather, before they took him into their family.

Years later, Wilhand is living in a cottage in the wilderness when he is visited by Pike, Scanlan and Grog. Upon seeing Grog physically weak from destroying Craven Edge, Wilhand mixed together a "pill" to help him, before revealing it was in fact a suppository, which Scanlan applied to Grog.

A year after the defeat of the Chroma Conclave, Wilhand is aiding the reconstruction of Westruun. While lifting a bucket of bricks, he spotted Pike and Grog in the street. As he called out to them, he accidentally fell over the railing, but was caught by Grog. They were then approached by Wilhand's lover, Luisa, who initially scolds him for his carelessness before picking him up, trading sexual innuendo before kissing each other.

Later, at Wilhand's cottage, Wilhand began to mix a soup for the community dinner while explaining how he met Luisa while volunteering in the reconstruction. With the city's nobility hoarding their own gold, the common folk were left to fend for themselves until a new holy man arrived and made them a community. Pike and Grog then ask Wilhand if he knew of a "badass wizard killing" ancestor. His eyes darting nervously, he "accidentally" dropped the pot lid on Grog's foot as a distraction before denying any knowledge.

At the community dinner, Wilhand delights at the spirit among his neighbors, before being distracted by a girl named Thea affected by Dragon Lung, which Pike failed to heal. Wilhand would help spoon Thea some of his soup, before Shepherd Gideon addressed the gathering and got them all to chant, "We are his blood." Alarmed, Pike and Grog suddenly grab a confused Wilhand and ran through the streets, informing him that his friends are involved with the same cult that attacked Keyleth's coronation and invaded Whitestone. Luisa and the other followers corner them, pleading that Wilhand needed them, but Gideon intervened and urged the crowd to let the trio leave.

Returning to his cottage, Wilhand tried urging Pike and Grog to talk it through with his friends, but Pike tells him they have to leave; Grog asked asked if he really believed in the mantra, "We are his blood", which Wilhand assumed was a metaphor. Wilhand then pulled out of his chest a locket with the image of himself, Pike and Grog inside and gifts it to Grog. Though Grog insists he's not family, Wilhand warmly assures him that he has fists as strong as his heart, making him a Trickfoot in spirit, and that he thinks of him as a son. As for Pike, he confessed the ancestor she was asking about was named Esreé, a champion of the Knowing Mistress who disappeared on a secret mission, before group of monks took her sword and scrubbed every trace of her existence, save for one sketch, depicting Esreé holding Mythcarver. He couldn't afford to discuss her in front of anything, even Luisa, but he felt it important to tell Pike of her family.

Suddenly, Luisa burst into the cottage and got into an argument with Pike. Wilhand tried to intervene, only to start coughing from Dragon Lung. Luisa proclaimed that the Children of Truth could cure him, making it so he can't die, before she and her fellow cultists struck Pike and Grog with shadowstone wands.

Taken to the middle of a field with Pike and Grog bound and gagged nearby, Wilhand is subjected to a macabre ritual as Luisa carved into his chest in an effort to recreate the ritual that created the cult's death knight. Weakened, Wilhand tried telling Luisa that this is not what she really wanted, but she was determined to "save" him at any cost. Before she could plunge the dagger into his body, Pike and Grog got free and intervened. Wilhand tried to convince Luisa that his granddaughter wanted to help, but his lover was too full of resentment towards indifferent "bigshots" like her and attacked. Wilhand could do nothing but hide as Pike and Grog were slowly overwhelmed, before the sudden arrival of Delilah Briarwood knocked all combatants off their feet. Wilhand tried to help Grog up, only to be distracted by his violent coughing. After Deliliah killed Luisa and departed, Pike ran over to Wilhand and tried to heal him to no avail. With his last breath, Wilhand asked if Grog was safe before reaching to touch Pike's face and thanked her, before expiring. Gideon would subsequently host Wilhand's funeral, attended by his friends and family.

Pike

Wilhand took Pike away from the Trickfoot family at the age of six and raised her away from the mischievous gnome clan. He said he saw good in her and couldn't stand the thought of that being squashed by the family. He raised her from then on, caring for her and seeing her grow in her powers. Pike cares about her great-great-grandfather very much, expressing deep concern for his well-being when Grog mentioned that his former herd had taken over Westruun. She was greatly relieved when Wilhand was discovered to have survived the herd's occupation and visited as often as she could when not saving Exandria or working to restore the Light of the Everlight.

Grog

Grog once saved and protected Wilhand from his own tribe. This action nearly killed Grog and left him badly hurt but Pike saved him, a thank you gift for saving Wilhand. Wilhand and Pike took him in as going against his tribe got him expelled as a weakling. Wilhand cared for the "mountain man" alongside Pike and they made room for the goliath in their home and backyard, building forts and trying to keep him fed. Grog greatly appreciates the old gnome and his best buddy Pike for saving him as well.
