The Sunfather was a parched, old halfling who was still full of joy and curiosity despite his age.
Biography
This halfling man was from Deastok, a town in Wildemount. At some point in his life he became a follower of the Dawnfather, learning how to channel divine magic and eventually earning a title, "Sunfather". When he was getting old, despite having loved ones still in Deastok, he joined an expedition that sailed from Port Damali, led by Darius de Rolo; however, there was a shipwreck, and although they survived, they ended up lost in the Alabaster Sierras. Eventually they found a valley where they rested, and when they noticed a beautiful golden tree there, Lord de Rolo considered using it to repair their vessel; the Sunfather approached to determine its nature, and the moment he touched the bark, he recognized the power of the Lord of the Sun, and wept, declaring he would rather be cut in half himself than harming the tree. After its holy nature was confirmed, Darius decided they would stay there for the time being.
As time passed, it became clear that the travelers would settle in the area, and since winter was coming, Lord de Rolo told his people they would build a more secure settlement to protect themselves; he also confirmed with the Sunfather that the beautiful golden tree would be called " Sun Tree " (their first instinct for a name). The priest confirmed that their god had planted the tree long ago, theorizing about its age, and got permission from Darius to study the magical properties of the region along with Dr. Frida de Rolo (the lord's wife), since they had noticed the leylines and other supernatural forces influencing the terrain; that would eventually lead to the discovery of the local whitestone, after which their new home was named. As the new city started growing, the Sunfather stayed, visiting the Sun Tree in the mornings and speaking to it about his people in Deastok, explaining that although he couldn't return to them yet, he took comfort in knowing that they were all still under the same sun.
The old halfling survived only a few years after they arrived to the Alabaster Sierras, and after a particularly harsh winter, he died with his hand in the Sun Tree's trunk, knowing he would meet his god. The death of the Sunfather taught the Sun Tree what it was to truly grieve.
