Background

When Kevdak beat Grog nearly to death, Stonejaw did nothing to help his son.

Stonejaw died at some point after Grog's departure from the Herd of Storms; Kevdak believed he had been killed by a wight. His corpse was later reanimated by the dying mage Drath Mephruhn who was attempting to become a lich, and Vox Machina destroyed him.
