Lady Fearne Calloway (pronounced /ˈfɜrn/) is a faun druid / rogue and member of the Crown Keepers and later Bells Hells. She is played by Ashley Johnson.
Appearance
Fearne is a faun. She is a little over six feet tall when measuring from her horns, with white spotted fur, spiraling horns and ample breasts. She has large deep-green eyes (very similar to her mother's), large furry ears, and sea-foam green hair. Her hooves have bits of moss around them. She wears flowy clothing and is covered in poisonous flowers including hemlock and oleander. She has a tail which wiggles when she feels she's being "naughty", although since it's hidden under her clothing it's usually not visible.
During her travels with the Crown Keepers, as she got nearer to the gate to the Feywild her appearance changed. One of her eyes changed from a humanoid to a goat-like pupil, and the flowers she wore began to turn and open. After holding the Circlet of Barbed Vision, one hand blackened and became claw-like. When she visited the Fey Realm with Bells Hells, her appearance similarly modified, with her features becoming more elongated and exaggerated.
When Fearne entered into a pact with Teven Klask, the Retribution of the Hells, the slightly flaming mark of a black horned crown (the symbol of Asmodeus) appeared on the central knuckle of her hand. She also got a tattoo of a flaming bell in her inner thigh. Later, when Fearne summoned Teven after the gods became mortal, he told her Asmodeus would return someday and their pact remained in force. When he left, the mark on her hand from his kiss had spread, now covering her entire hand in dark hellish runes and designs.
After absorbing the Spark of Rau'shan, her horns transformed, becoming like volcanic rock with fiery veins. While empowered by the elemental energy of the spark, she was surrounded by golden light, with her eyes and hair burning slightly, and the tips of her fingers constantly producing flames (the ones from the Lolth-touched hand were black). Her skin (when she didn't want to hurt whoever was touching her) felt as warm as a mug filled with hot liquid. Even after she dropped the effect and returned to her normal appearance, two tiny flames remained in the middle of each pupil of her eyes, and a faint trail of black smoke trailed from the tips of her ears and fingers.
When the party was preparing to travel to Aeor, Fearne altered her outfit and seemed to look a little more human rather than fey, altered by her experiences and those around her. She wore FCG's blue jacket, still bearing burn marks from the explosion that killed him, a row of Ashton's metallic spikes on one shoulder, Chetney's gifted wolf on her belt, a bracelet of red thread woven with violets, and a jade stone from Orym woven into an ankle bracelet. She noted it wasn't as flashy as her previous clothing, but was more grounded and battle-ready. By then her hair, even up, was messier, and her skin had more freckles from the sun.
Personality
Fearne is unperturbed and direct. Her soft, demure voice contrasts with her somewhat erratic, insensitive, and self-possessed behavior, in much the same way as the wonderful-looking flowers she wears are actually all poisonous. Fearne loves to collect various trinkets, and she enjoys stealing them. In combat, she always goes for the kill. She is flirty by nature, mostly for fun unless there are deeper feelings involved. She can be awkward in dealing with people because of her extremely sheltered upbringing in the Fey Realm. That same isolated upbringing makes Fearne want other creatures to be free, even if deep down she wants them to stay with her.
Fearne has expressed concern that her emotions don't work the same in the Material Plane, and that guilt, for example, is more intense in Exandria than it ever was in the Fey Realm. She tends to be positive, even if she doesn't really feel it, because she doesn't want to deal with the stress that her mortal friends might die during their adventuring. Fearne is also secretly scared of her own future: after meeting a corrupted version of herself sent by Lady Elmenore, she worries that eventually she will gain power and that will lead her to become her dark self. It was this fear that kept her initially from accepting the power that the Spark of Rau'shan might grant.
Background
According to Fearne's mother, Fearne was born in the Verdant Expanse of Tal'Dorei on Exandria's Prime Material Plane under a flare of the red moon Ruidus. When she and her parents returned to the Feywild, the moon began to appear on that plane where it ordinarily does not. The circumstances of Fearne's birth were decided by her biological father, Sorrowlord Athion Zathuda, Birdie Calloway's lover, who lost interest in both mother and daughter as he had more important projects to focus on. Birdie ran away with Oleander, a fey elven prisoner she had fallen in love with, and they decided to raise the small faun as their daughter in common. Unbeknownst either to them or to Fearne herself, her soul had been promised at birth by Zathuda, leaving her spiritual essence under a dark contract she is unaware of.
At some point during Fearne's childhood, Birdie and Ollie became outcasts and left for the Material Plane, entrusting Fearne to the care of her grandmother Morri Calloway. She last saw them around 90 years before Campaign Three when she was between three and twelve years old, although the apparent time dilation that occurred during her life in the Feywild makes it unclear in what year that was. While they were away, Fearne received letters, gifts, and postcards signed in their name. The hag kept her safe, feeling that the child's fate was a paradox full of potential, but eventually, regardless of her destiny, ended up loving her as a granddaughter, protecting her from the Unseelie agents sent by Sorrowlord Zathuda.
At home in the Feywild, Fearne had a beautiful bedroom where she kept all of the trinkets she had stolen on her travels. She had fey animal friends named Sweet Pea (a sun bear), Bompers (a crocodile), Peepers (a jackrabbit), and Dr. Nesbitt (an owl), which Nana Morri would send to her when she was lonely in an effort to make her life more full. Although she wasn't entirely sure as an adult, she suspected that, growing up, Nana Morri occasionally erased her memories about some of her animal friends so she could meet them for the first time several times.
As an adult, in Quen'pillar or Cuersaar 842 PD, Fearne traveled from the Feywild to the Prime Material Plane through the gate built by Vox Machina for Artagan. Her goals were to explore, to see the rest of the world, and to find her parents, whom she hadn't seen in "a very long time". She had also been entrusted by her grandmother with a round green crystal lens and told to give it to her parents when she found them.
The first of the Crown Keepers Fearne met, apparently, was Orym.
Exandria Unlimited Prime
With the rest of the Exandria Unlimited Prime party, Fearne woke up in a house in Emon with no memory of the preceding week. When the party found a baby ankheg in a warehouse they robbed, she was very worried about it and had to be talked out of going back to get it. Later, she suggested taking the crown they had found to her grandmother Morri Calloway in the Feywild, but wasn't sure how to get there right now.
During the battle on the Oh No Plateau, Fearne transformed into a dire wolf and was able to save Little Mister when Dariax attacked him while thinking he was an enemy. She was also instrumental in getting the group away from Poska's attempted kidnapping by casting Charm Person on Poska and convincing her to tell the Nameless Ones to stand down.
During the party's travel south toward Byroden, Fearne realized they were on the road she took to travel to Emon. While in the main thick of the Verdant Expanse, she led the group off the Wildwood Byway and deeper into the woods, feeling a strong sense that she needed to check something. Her eyes began looking more goat-like. They reached an open glade with a strange gate in its center, which Fearne recognized as the gate she came through from the Feywild. She found herself wanting to go through the gate, but when she tentatively put her hand in, a misshapen twin stepped out wearing the Circlet of Barbed Vision. The creature, a forlarren sent by Lady Elmenore to retrieve Fearne, told her that her grandmother was in actuality the one who sent her the gifts purporting to be from her parents, but Fearne was convinced she was lying. The creature invited Fearne to come home, saying, "I found my power," and a battle ensued.
Fearne took part in the Gem of Byroden pageant, but failed to place. Along with others in the party, she dreamed about the Circlet and heard the voice of Lolth, and she was contacted by the Wildmother at the obelisk near Qoniira. At the cube within the ruins of Niirdal-Sarqet, Fearne deciphered the final side, seizing control of it, causing it to shatter apart and release a bright blue miasma of arcane energy.
In the final battle, Fearne again utilized her dire wolf form. The party decided to stay together for at least the time being.
The Calloways
Fearne's foster grandmother, Morri, (whom Fearne says is extremely intelligent) sent her from the Feywild to Exandria. She passed through a gate and arrived near Syngorn.
Fearne's parents are outcasts. Fearne was told by a dark version of herself that the Archfey Elmenore wanted her back. After the battle that followed, Fearne could feel the displeasure of Elmenore at the dark alter ego's failure.
When Fearne finally met her parents it was revealed that they had been apart longer than they expected, and Fearne acted somewhat cold around them, resenting their absence during her childhood (although she didn't resent Morrigan, since the hag had been her family regardless of blood ties). However, when the apogee solstice approached and the druid met again with her parents, she decided to act nicely just in case the world ended days later. When she reunited with them in the Feywild, many days later, she was happy to see them, and even after the revelations made there (that Athion Zathuda was her biological sire and Birdie and Ollie had never told her) she was still on good terms with them and hoped to spend more time with them. However, days later she seemed to be less worried about keeping in touch with Ollie, explaining to Dorian that he had been a step-father to her for a short time and she didn't know him that well, and speaking only to Birdie during their brief visit to Ligament Manor; in her next visit, when she got the chance to speak with both Birdie and Ollie, she was kind to them, and seemed comfortable in their presence. When she thinks of family, Nana Morri comes to mind before the Calloways or the Sorrowlord.
Little Mister
Little Mister is Fearne's wildfire spirit, a monkey whose mouth is a gaping furnace, burning anything that he decides to eat. Little Mister is also energetic, especially when he was running with Opal to the docks. Fearne considers Mister her child in a way, and she deliberately let her own parents believe they had a grandchild to make them feel bad, saying she was there for her own (without clarifying it was her wildfire spirit).
Orym
Fearne and Orym have contrasting personalities: she with a chaotic fey nature and he soberly making a conscious effort to do good and not screw people over. Despite Orym's worrying about the trouble Fearne will get herself and the party into, they are attentive to each other and get along well.
After Dorian temporarily left Marquet Orym remained as Fearne's closest friend (and she did present him to others as her best friend). They both took care of each other, and when he was in danger, she prioritized his well-being.
Ashton Greymoore
Ashton and Fearne enjoy each other's mischief. The two have a form of good-natured flirtatious pick-pocketing game going on between each other. Ashton began this game by pickpocketing her when they first met, stealing a large earring of the Allhammer's symbol, which Fearne herself stole from a pachydan priest she met on her first day in Jrusar. She then countered and stole the earring back, offering it to Preio Madali as payment for a bottle of Elvish alcohol. In return, Ashton stole the chamber pot with a flower growing out of it (which she originally lifted from Dugger's house) when she was blinded by electric shock. At some point, she offered to let Ashton drink some of the liquor out of her hair after Bertrand Bell accidentally threw it at her.
Both seem to be interested in each other, with Fearne frequently finding Ashton interesting and beautiful despite their broken appearance. Ashton seems interested in Fearne as well, often finding her eccentric personality and fae lifestyle enchanting. Ashton, despite their intense dislike of physical contact due to their chronic pain, frequently seeks physical connection with Fearne. He is the only person within Bells Hells who pickpockets Fearne, and often seeks her out during moments of levity, as seen during the end of the crawler chase when he called her name and fell within the same hole she had fallen in earlier. This is the most apparent during episode 50, when Ashton hugged Fearne before the two parties disbanded to defeat the malleus key. Ashton hugged Fearne before pickpocketing her. When caught, Fearne asked what he had wanted from her, to which Ashton responded that they had wanted "something personal and irreplaceable". Fearne granted their wish by kissing them on the forehead, with Ashton shyly responding, "well, fuck, now that's just really hard to steal back." Many days later, after a conversation during which Ashton referred to the faun as a potential "sister" she was confused, so he clarified that he didn't mean it, and that he actually considered her very attractive; they had a candid conversation which ended when Fearne called him hot and ran away. That same day, Ashton kissed Fearne (officially stealing her kiss back) before using the Quintessence Array to absorb the elemental power of a titan. This process almost killed them, and although the druid had helped keeping them alive with her magic, when the process was over she kicked their head, angry at the barbarian, and full of regret for letting them almost die trying to take Rau'shan's power. Despite her feelings for Ashton, she was still furious, and the following day she told him that she didn’t like him at the moment for what had happened, although her attitude softened over the following days.
After the traumatic death of Fresh Cut Grass, Fearne was concerned about Ashton and hugged him. He later suggested they spend the night together. She accepted on the condition they just hold each other and Ashton replied that that was exactly what he had meant. They ended up cuddling, with Fearne being the big spoon. Later that night when Fearne and Orym were in danger, Ashton showed visible concern. When they were found safe, he recognized that Fearne's nature was such that she couldn't realistically be asked not to follow cute creatures, but asked her to at least take a buddy with her, and she agreed.
After a game of Truth or Spin the Bottle Ashton decided to be blunt and hold the bottle to point directly at Fearne, and she happily followed that action, which led them to share some affectionate kisses covered by a blanket.
Chetney Pock O'Pea
Main article: Relationship between Chetney and Fearne
After their first meeting, Chetney observed that Fearne was the "nice one" of the group. Fearne was excited about Chetney's toy making skills, and asked him to make her something. She was fascinated with Chetney's lycanthropy and mentioned several times that she would also like to be a werewolf. After fighting the Shade Mother, Chetney proposed a one-night stand with Fearne, planning to meet in Chetney's room when he howled at 3 AM. Chetney ended up falling asleep, but Fearne woke up at 2:59 AM and waited outside his door. Chetney later described he and Fearne as "two adults just reacting to chemistry", to which Fearne agreed and added that she would probably make her rounds through the whole group. After trading one of her treasures for a wooden music box, Fearne asked Chetney to carve a dedication to her parents into it. While on watch, Fearne told Chetney about a special gem her Nana Morri gave her, and let Chetney inspect it. He later told Fearne that he had made her toy first out of the group, and gave her a small wooden wolf, adding that if she ever wanted to "take a ride on the wild side, the invitation is out there." Fearne told Chetney that the wolf was probably her favorite thing she had.
After meeting Deanna Fearne provoked Chetney into approaching his old fling again under the threat that if he didn't, she would. When the two gnomes eventually reconnected, Deanna requested that Fearne join them for a night of fun in the Savalirwood, and the faun was more than willing. When Fearne was furious and heartbroken after Ashton's near-death experience, it was Chetney who helped her feel better, encouraging her and showing her kindness (without sugarcoating that she had made a mistake).
Imogen Temult
Fearne and Imogen are good friends. When they had just met, the faun liked to mess with the sorcerer's fear of heights, and would occasionally act behind her back with misled good intentions (such as when she discreetly gave her a piece of gnarlrock thinking it would help her reconcile with Laudna, unaware of the stone's effects). However, as they spent more time together Fearne learned more about Imogen and her Ruidusborn condition, something she would later discover they had in common; despite her general fey-like nonchalance, the druid was very emotionally invested in her friend's safety, showing genuine fear during the apogee solstice when Imogen was dreaming of Ruidus.
When they finally got to visit the Moon of Ill Omen with Bells Hells, Fearne and Imogen discovered they could share magical resources among them, and that made them really excited, although they both tried to make Laudna not feel left out, because at that point the three adventurers had a dynamic together, considering themselves the three "witches" of the team.
Ludinus Da'leth
After witnessing what the archmage is capable of, Fearne is somewhat scared of him. However, she is also very curious, feeling like if she understood him, she would be able to "fix" him.
Gloamglut
From the first moment she saw her father's draconic mount Fearne wanted to claim it for herself, and although in more than one battle the fey dragon was her enemy, when Zathuda died, the druid took risks to use her own blood to gain Gloamglut's trust. She was immediately fond of the creature and was kind to it, and when she learned that the only way to keep it with her was to perform a blood ritual, she ultimately decided to set it free, since the creature deserved it. This gesture, along with her blood and general behavior, made the dragon trust her enough to teach her a call that would help her contact it, if she wanted.

Behind the scenes
Ashley used several elements as inspiration to create Fearne, including the Skogsrå (a Swedish nymph -like creature that lured people into the forest, revealing there its darker nature and keeping victims from ever leaving), the concept of a dark Disney princess, her experience growing up with her mother (who inspired the character of Nana Morri), and a bit of Jennifer Coolidge and Joan Cusack for her demeanor.
Fearne was initially developed as a character concept for Campaign Three and was brought into Exandria Unlimited Prime for further development. Afterward, Ashley had the option to choose another character for the campaign, but she chose to continue playing Fearne. Her stats were then rerolled under the same rules as other characters in Campaign Three and prior campaigns: using the rolled method in the Player's Handbook with a homebrewed rule that if the sum of the scores was less than 70, they could reroll the scores.
Matthew Mercer revealed that due to her dark fey connections, Fearne was intended to be the original Ruidusborn connected to the red moon plot in Campaign Three, but when Laura talked to him about Imogen's dreams, he decided to make both of them Ruidusborn, and ended up exploring the latter's connection with Ruidus more.

- "Oh, well, that's where I draw the line. I don't like sharing."
- "Time is a construct that man uses to define change. So be whatever age you want, I guess."
- "It's 112, and that's my age. But I feel about 732."
- "It's just hard when you feel something and the other person doesn't. It just happens. Every time. Always the bridesmaid.
- "I realize I'm not as good at lying as I thought. Which is weird because I do it all the time."
- (a toast) "May the hair in your ears never fall out!"
- "I don't really [steal]... I just borrow for a long time."
- "I think it's a little reckless because it's a little fun."
- (as she dies) "Boy. Well, that was a hell of a run."
- Fearne: (fleeing an ankheg) I'm trying to make my vibrations weird on the sand so that it doesn't... I don't know what I'm doing.
Orym: Your vibes are already pretty weird. - "One man's burden is another man's gift."
- (accepting Teven Klask's bargain) I feel like I'm wanting a little excitement, and I really like what your god's about, like the pleasure thing, and I've really been trying to put like self-care before-- you know, like caring about myself. Pleasure, make it all about me. Let's do it. I'm in.
- "You have this thing here in this realm called guilt, and I really felt it."
- (when told that Dominox fed on insecurity) "I will go talk to him, it's fine. I got this covered."
- Athion: (as a tapestry) Burn what thou wilt, and take what thy wishes from the ash. What you bear is the curse of ambition.
Fearne: Well, that doesn't sound that bad.
