The Mighty Nein Origins: Nott the Brave

At some point around 833 PD Khaaz and her mate, Drekkit, led their goblin clan to Felderwin, attacking their inhabitants and taking several prisoners, including Veth and Yeza Brenatto, as well as their young son, Luc.

The clan kept the prisoners for weeks, weaker and weaker, and during that time Khaaz and Veth interacted. Although the goblin was generally annoyed by the halfling family, she opened up a bit to Veth, both being women who appreciated their respective spouses; although Khaaz ignored the prisoner's pleas to let her family go, he left within her reach the tools (bone toothpicks) to force the lock on their cage and escape. While Yeza and Luc ran ahead, Veth lured their captors away, eventually being confronted by them. She tried to attack them, and ended up throwing a vial of acid in Drekkit's face, killing him. Khaaz witnessed it, and once Veth was recaptured, the goblin widow took her to an old spellcaster, Isharnai, with whom she made a deal, giving instructions to "make her suffer". The witch brought Veth to the river and showed her her reflection, allowing her to appreciate her own beauty and value, just the way Yeza looked at her, despite her usual hatred for her own appearance; then she drowned the halfling in a river, and though Nott believes that she died, she later awoke as a goblin.

Nott was taken back by the goblin clan as a slave and bounced around many different jobs; Khaaz had no sympathy for her, not even allowing her to go see her family, since she couldn't see Drekkit either. The former halfling eventually became the torturer's assistant, until one day the goblins brought another halfling and during the torture process Nott hid, making Khaaz believe she had run away. When the goblin widow left Nott freed the halfling prisoner so he could run away, after which she escaped as well.

Drekkit

Khaaz considered her husband annoying, but she relied on him, even if she wouldn't admit it in front of him. When he died, the torturer became vengeful, using Isharnai's help to ensure her mate's murderer suffered.
