Appearance

In life, Novos was a furious bearded dwarf. As the ghostly captain of the Crimson Abyss, he was a haggard and skeletal, with a patchy, mossy beard tucked into his long jacket; he carried a massive saber and a hand cannon. His eyes flamed a burning blue radiating from his face, and there was a dull blue pulsing glow in his ribcage. However, after Cyrillia shared her warmth with him, the flaming energy of his undead form became a softer purple.

Personality

Despite being very aggressive, Captain Novos likes manners. He behaves somewhat shyly when he's alone with a woman.

History

Around 743 PD, during a stormy battle, Novos, who had been worried about his enemies allying with each other, struck some sort of dark deal with Bane, the Strife Emperor before being struck in the forehead by a bolt and falling onto the deck, smiling. After that, he, his crew, and his ship became a ghostly apparition in the archipelago, and the captain would often seek treasure, claiming anything of interest that would touch the waves, although he was particularly interested in recovering his original belongings. Although he embraced his undeath, he felt he might get bored with it by the time he had found all of his still-missing items. For the present, however, he was bound to the waters around the Shattered Teeth.

Captain Novos owned a special compass attuned to a certain island of the Shattered Teeth. After his death, someone found the item, and from that moment they felt like they were being followed, until they gave it away to Jirana, who, since she was always on the same island, wasn't worried about the properties of the compass. The galapa gave the object to Bells Hells, telling them that putting it into the water could potentially attract Novos, so they could ask him to bring them to Kalutha.

When the Crimson Abyss appeared initially the captain wanted the adventurers dead, eventually agreeing to parlay with Laudna, and bargained her into agreeing to give him his compass and Graz'tchar as soon as they got on board in exchange for transportation. He stated that he always kept his word. When the compass was placed in his hand, there was a sound like a sigh of joy from all around.

During her time on board, Fearne, with her chaotic charm, managed to convince Urlu to use his quarters to nap, and he, in turn, asked if she would be willing to share some of her warmth with him. They spent some time together (much to Cyrillia's dismay, since she was very protective of the captain), during which the druid tried to convince him to give Graz'tchar to her (and managed to hold the weapon for a few seconds to "say goodbye"). The two of them ended up spooning, and in the process Fearne gave the skeleton some of her warmth, which caused him to recover some color, but Fearne permanently lost 5 hit points. After that Urlu was satisfied but his navigator was furious and confronted Fearne, who in turn convinced her to share her own warmth with the captain. Urlu, initially surprised, allowed Cyrillia to enter his quarters and they spent time together, causing a lot of steam and even changing the color of the lights on the vessel. After that, Captain Novos, much more happy and with a slight limp, allowed Bells Hells to organize a dance party for the crew on their last day on board, although by the end of it he threatened them so they wouldn't tell anyone that they had been partying in the Crimson Abyss. Before they left he gave Chetney a brief list of lost treasures, in case the adventuring party happened to find any of them.

Months after the end of the Era of Reclamation the Unseelie Court tried to claim Fearne's soul, and during a discussion about the subject in Ligament Manor it was revealed that a fragment of her soul was actually gone, since Captain Novos had claimed it. The pirate was summoned to the Feywild by Morrigan. After flirting with both the hag and the faun (and shocking Braius Doomseed, who questioned Fearne's taste in men), Novos heard about the situation and refused to renounce to the fragment of soul, since it came from a fair deal; moreover, he explained that prize belonged to the Strife Emperor. After more arguments Fearne ended up being kidnapped by Teven Klask, and after she was rescued she ate a magical scroll that got rid of most claims on her soul.
