Background

Deirta was consecuted a long time ago, becoming a follower of The Luxon and living multiple lives, reincarnation after reincarnation, until she became an Umavi, a "perfect soul" revered in the Kryn Dynasty. During her most recent life, which started at some point before the 8th century after the Divergence, she is the leader of Den Thelyss, which wishes to see the Dynasty established within the world and respected by others.

She had a relationship with another dark elf, having two sons with him. However, this man didn't have a very good relationship with their firstborn, Essek, and an argument between them caused the father to go on a mission in Bazzoxan in which he died. Deirta and her family had a good position within the hierarchy of the Dynasty. Essek became a Shadowhand, while Verin was a Taskhand and the leader of the Aurora Watch in Bazzoxan by 836 PD.

The Mighty Nein

By the time the War of Ash and Light was starting, Deirta Thelyss hadn't been seen in public in some time, staying at home following her son's advice because she was manifesting signs of typhros, with her mind trying to reconcile the memories of too many lives.

When she listened to Essek and Verrat arguing about how her son had betrayed their country looking for a way to save her soul, Deirta decided to sacrifice herself in order to give Essek a chance; he met with the Bright Queen and confessed her condition, agreeing to be executed, and making sure that Leylas believed that her Shadowhand's only crime was to be a loving son who had kept his sick mother hidden. Right before her death, having chosen her son to be the one to kill her, she whispered to him to get back the beacon, and then helped him by pushing the dagger he was holding against her own body, making the death quick.

Relationships

Deirta Thelyss has had many connections and relationships across many lives, which include:

  • Janica: An important woman in one of her past lives, for whom she had romantic feelings. She saw her die at the hands of Dwendalian soldiers.
  • Essek Thelyss: Her eldest son in her current life. He cares about her and her well-being, although they didn't have a close relationship. She wasn't the kind of mother that prepared meals for him when he was younger.
  • Verrat: She was his mentor and taught him how to be a warrior; he considers her martial skill as a core aspect of her identity, recognizing the lack of it as a sign of typhros. However, because of his history with Deirta he didn't want to give her away, even if law demanded it.
