Appearance

Trinket is a large brown bear. He wears armor plating that was harvested from a bulette by Grog and reforged by a dwarf blacksmith named Karen in Emon.

In 843 PD he was old and tired, and had a lot of grey hair, as well as some missing teeth.

Background

Vex and Trinket became companions when Vex placed too much trust in poachers and ended up being captured by them. She managed to escape from the poachers' cage and eliminate two of them. She then found Trinket's mother, who was badly injured due to the poachers harvesting from her tortured but still-living body. Vex put the bear out of her misery before finding a young Trinket also in the cage. She rescued the cub and they have since been close friends.

Kith & Kin

Around 807 PD, Trinket accompanied Vax'ildan and Vex'ahlia as they travelled to Westruun. The trio fought giant spiders in the Bramblewood Forest along the way, and Trinket accompanied Vex'ahlia to hunt dinner that evening.

The twins spent a few nights in the city, leaving Trinket behind in the Bramblewood. They collected him as they made their way to Jorenn Village to complete a contract for the Clasp, and found him fishing in a stream.

A few nights later, Trinket and the twins camped just outside of Jorenn Village with some other travellers, when they were attacked by ash walkers. The humanoids (except for Vax'ildan) in the camp were rescued by riders from the Shadewatch, and Trinket followed them; they eventually reached Jorenn Village. Inside the village, Trinket and Vex'ahlia met Wick, the right-hand-man to Shademaster Derowen, and Aswin, Derowen's daughter, who immediately became enamoured with Trinket. Vex'ahlia left Trinket to protect Aswin while she joined the archers on the palisades. Trinket and Vex'ahlia were given a room in the Shade Hall as thanks for their aid, with a cot set up for the bear. The next morning, Aswin crept into their room to see Trinket again. She fed him fruit, and Vex left them together in the room while she went to find Derowen.

Over the next few days, Vex and Trinket searched the area around Jorenn for any sign of Vax'ildan—who had been taken in by the outlaw miners led by Thorn —and spent their evenings at the Shade Hall with Derowen, Aswin, and Wick. One night, Aswin had a night terror about the ash walkers, and Derowen, Vex'ahlia, and Trinket rushed into her room to comfort her. To help her calm down and fall back asleep, Vex'ahlia told Aswin a sanitized version of the story of how she and Trinket met, in which the poachers that kidnapped her looked monstrous (instead of like regular people), Trinket inspired her to break free, and Vax'ildan showed up to help them fight the poachers; she also omitted the part involving Trinket's mother. Trinket stayed with Aswin for a little while that night.

Trinket remained in Jorenn Village with Wick and Aswin while Vex'ahlia went to the mines with Derowen. They returned with Vax'ildan, and Trinket greeted him with a bear hug and flurry of licks. Vax was surprised to see that his sister had left Trinket in someone else's care, instead of leaving him on his own.

The next day, Vex and Trinket followed Vax as he headed back to the mines. Trinket was upset about having to walk through an illusory boulder to enter, but did it at Vex's insistence. Thorn led Trinket and Vex'ahlia into the main cavern so that they could meet the rest of the miners; the children in particular were fascinated by the bear. After they shared a meal with the miners, the Shadewatch returned to the mines. Trinket and the twins escaped through a side tunnel. They tried to camp in the hills, but were interrupted by ash walkers emerging from the mines. Trinket attacked one, but it didn't retaliate; the twins realized that the walkers were only interested in attacking Jorenn Village. They decided to split up: Vex'ahlia and Trinket would enter Jorenn from the main gate, while Vax'ildan would sneak in through the miners' gate. Trinket and Vex helped protect another group of travellers from the ash walkers, then entered Jorenn Village with them. They were allowed to stay at the Shade Hall again, but in the morning, they were brought to see Derowen, who was suspicious of Vex's actions. As the confrontation became violent, with Derowen stabbing the imprisoned Thorn, Aswin entered the room, and was delighted to see Vex and Trinket. Vex'ahlia asked Trinket to take Aswin to Wick, and they left the room, leaving Vex alone to fight the Shademaster and the ash walkers that soon entered the town. Instead of going to find Wick or to her own room, Aswin went to collect Vex'ahlia's weapons. Trinket chased after her as she stumbled out into the battle against the ash walkers and attempted to pull her away by the shirt. Vex intervened, put the girl on Trinket's back, and sent them inside; Wick sent two guards, Kela and Yorn, as well.

A few days later, Trinket accompanied the twins, Thorn, and Wick as they walked into the hills. While the twins and Thorn went further into the hills, Trinket went fishing in a stream. He and the twins then began their journey back to Westruun. When they returned to Westruun a few days later, they again left Trinket outside the city, and collected him on their way out, bound for Stilben.

Before the stream

Trinket was nearly killed when Grog attempted to disarm a room full of traps by hitting the bear on his backside with the flat side of an axe, causing Trinket to charge straight into the traps, triggering all of them. Vex (and Laura) was very angry with Grog (and Travis) afterwards.

Campaign One: Vox Machina

Trinket accompanied Vex'ahlia on all her travels with Vox Machina. The group often struggled to get around on their Carpet of Flying or sneak through tight caverns with the bear in tow, leading Scanlan Shorthalt to develop an animosity to the bear. This changed when the group found Raven's Slumber in the Sunken Tomb and gave it to Vex'ahlia so that Trinket could be carried in the magical jewel. Trinket became even more formidable after scaring off a Spirit Bear in the Feywild and gaining the ability to benefit from Vex's Hunter's Mark and immediately enter Raven's Slumber upon falling unconscious.

Season One

Trinket participated in a bar fight, assisting Vox Machina against their opponents. He also accompanied them in their first encounter with the dragon, Brimscythe. When the team decided to go after the Briarwoods, Trinket was left behind at Vox Machina's keep, with Vex feeling that the dangers of Whitestone were no place for a bear.

Proficiencies

  • Skills: Perception

Abilities

In " The Feast " (1x24), Vex taught Trinket a rolling attack that she named " Cannonball ". As a trampling alternative to Multiattack, Trinket runs forward and curls into a ball in his segmented bulette armor, crashing through enemies in front of him that are his size or smaller, dealing bludgeoning damage to any that are hit. Trinket rolls a melee attack roll against each enemy in the path. Enemies that are not successfully hit by the ability may take opportunity attacks against Trinket if he leaves their melee range as part of the movement of the attack.

After receiving a boon from the bear spirit Orlan, Trinket gained several abilities. He now gets a damage boost from Vex'ahlia's Hunter's Mark; he can use his Primal Fury once per short rest to gain advantage on attacks as well as critical attacks on natural rolls of 19 or 20; and if he falls unconscious within 100 feet of Vex and Raven's Slumber then he is immediately transported inside the crystal and stabilized.

As a brown bear, Trinket has Keen Smell, granting him advantage on Perception checks that rely on smell.
