Chetney Pock O'Pea (pronounced /ˈtʃɛtni ˈpɒkəˌpiː/) is a gnomish blood hunter / rogue and member of Bells Hells. He is played by Travis Willingham.
Appearance
Chetney is an elderly gnome who appears to be "a hundred-and-something" years old, with blue eyes, several scars, and a hooked nose that he says has been broken more than once. He stands about 3 foot 4 inches and has well-muscled arms. On his right arm is a tattoo of a crown and the letters "RTA", which stand for "Rexxentrum Toy Authority" (a mark required by his former union), though he tells people it stands for "Recognize The Alpha". Tufts of silvery-grey hair sprout from and over his ears from under a knitted cap with ear straps pulled down tight on his head; he is partially bald, and the remaining hair has gone completely silver as well. He originally wore a leather chest harness, pointy-toed boots, and woodworking tools around his waist. While aboard the Crimson Abyss, he acquired a flaming bell tattoo on his butt cheek. Just before the group traveled to Eiselcross, he bought a new leather fur-lined suit with some chainmail accents and a shoulder pauldron crafted from a piece of FCG's body, fingerless gloves, and a blue bandana embroidered "RTA", had his toolbelt turned into a bandolier, and hung the Harp of Valor from a leather strap at his waist.
In his werewolf form, Chetney becomes taller, and silvery-grey hair grows from his entire body. The transformation takes place quickly and results in his bones breaking and realigning and claws ripping through his existing fingernails. His voice is much deeper and gruffer as a werewolf.
According to Travis Willingham, in his youth Chetney was an attractive, tanned man, though with less muscular legs than his upper body. He had (more abundant) auburn hair, including groomed chest hair and a mustache.
Personality
Chetney loves woodworking, especially furniture making and toymaking. He works almost exclusively in wood and scorns the use of metal in craftsmanship; it may have been over this or a similar issue that he left his job in Uthodurn working for Oltgar. His skills as a woodcarver lend him skill in breaking and entering.
Chetney has shown himself willing to volunteer for risky situations within his skillset but hesitant to rush into danger that seems beyond his capability. He is quick to retort, stubborn-willed, and foul-mouthed but perceptive and capable under pressure. He has a selfish streak, demonstrated when he kept the money he found in Vali Dertrana's office and only admitted it to Imogen, but also scrupulously honors explicit contracts he enters into, such as when the rest of Bells Hells agreed to accept wooden toys as payment for their aid in locating Gurge Kisgregg.
His former lover Deanna Leimert described him as she knew him two hundred years ago being driven, focused, and passionate about what he believed in. She noted that he had changed significantly since then and she didn't really recognize him anymore.
As a teenager, Chetney was slightly awkward and a loner who traveled a lot.
Background
Chetney told Fearne Calloway that he left home early because he knew he "wanted to go into the trade." He returned after a long time and his parents and siblings were gone, scattered to different places. Chetney said he was fine with this, because they didn't really have "a tight familial thing". He found his passion and followed it.
Later, Chetney revealed that he grew up in the Bramblewood outside of Westruun during the reign of Zan Tal'Dorei when Errevon the Rimelord (an elemental Primordial) was attacking Tal'Dorei in the Icelost Years shortly after the Scattered War. When he was "still a kid", he returned from learning to make toys and discovered his family, including his five older siblings, were gone, leaving only toys behind. Although Chetney understood they had been trying to "cover their asses", given the many dangerous events (that included a big red dragon going across the continent, one of the many calamitous events the gnome experienced), he was so angry they left, he never looked for any of them. He now believes anyone he gets close to will just look for a reason to leave him.
At some point in or before the 7th century PD Chetney had a brief but passionate fling with Deanna Leimert, a gnomish woman of similar age, after they met in a vacation town on the beach, in the Menagerie Coast; she made him his iconic hat. Their involvement ended on bad terms, and it is possible that Frudell, another lover of Chetney, was involved.
Chetney became a wood craftsman in Uthodurn, regarding himself as a master craftsman. He formerly made furniture, and for some time until 798 PD he worked repairing boats, but has since mostly found success as a toymaker, becoming particularly good at rocking horses, which were his own favorite childhood toy. He worked for Oltgar, who mentored him in toymaking, in a shop in the city's Deliberation Disk. Chetney and Oltgar had a dispute in 843 PD over a "change in direction", allegedly about no longer working with wood, that drove Chetney to believe that Oltgar "betrayed the very craft"; he also started dealing with a new partner, Drixlitch Ovana, that the gnome disliked quite a lot. It escalated until Chetney "messed up [his] employer something fierce" and wounded Drixlitch, after which he was chased out of Uthodurn into the surrounding forest by the Glassblades.
Chetney traveled through the Flotket Alps back into the northern part of the Savalirwood. Several months to a year prior to the beginning of Campaign Three, while trying to trap food in the forest, he was bitten by a human werewolf, whom he killed, and contracted lycanthropy. He was found there by members of the Claret Orders, another group of lycanthropes, who had been tracking the human werewolf. They gave Chetney a chance to see if he could exercise some control over his lycanthropy. The group (including "Rudina") helped him a bit with his new abilities, but ultimately things did not go well and Chetney was given "kind of a warning" or ultimatum. He was directed to contact Gurge Kisgregg in Jrusar, Marquet. Chetney initially claimed he had been directed there by a craftmen's guild; however, he eventually revealed he was lying about seeking Gurge out for professional woodworking reasons.
Chetney successfully found Gurge, who shortly grew tired of him and hoped to direct Chetney to the Gorgynei instead. Gurge entered Jrusar to look for Ajit Dayal, who knew of the Gorgynei's location, but was kidnapped upon entering Jrusar, leaving Chetney without allies.
Fearne Calloway
Chetney immediately liked Fearne. His toy payment to her was a carved wooden wolf, and he later gave her a collapsible articulated wooden doll and three small wooden dolls dressed as Fearne, her mother, and her father.
At one point, Fearne agreed to meet Chetney for a romantic rendezvous if he came to her room at precisely 3 AM, but he slept through the appointment. He continued thereafter to make half-hearted attempts to arrange a new tryst, and eventually they both shared a passionate night with Deanna. After this event Chetney has shown some jealousy when seeing that other people flirted with Fearne (something that he had already done on occasions throughout their adventures together); he still shows romantic gestures towards her from time to time, like giving her flowers. When Fearne was furious and heartbroken after Ashton's near-death experience, it was Chetney who helped her feel better, encouraging her and showing her kindness (without sugarcoating that she had made a mistake).
Ashton Greymoore
When the group discovered that Chetney was afflicted by lycanthropy and were discussing whether to trust Chetney and let him stay with the group, Ashton, Laudna, and FCG all said that they liked him. Chetney's handcrafted carved wooden toy for Ashton was an articulated posable hand.
They have had shared playful rivalry and tension for most of their adventure together, but after Ashton hurt Fearne's feelings trying to absorb Rau'shan's power, Chetney was very aggressive with them, telling them to leave if they felt like they weren't able to control their impulses. However, Chetney was relieved to see that they were still there in the morning and told them that it was a good start. Since they were alone together, Chetney decided to test out what Ashton’s new arm could do. After not noticing anything new with the arm, they decided to search for the others together. After some days and more adventures together, however, the gnome calmed down and the relationship between them regained cordiality. When Ashton and Fearne slept spooning, Chetney noticed it because of the genasi's smell, and showed some surprise.
Ever since they began traveling together, Chetney has been helping them with their hair, chiseling it every single week. Recently, at Ashton's request, he shaped it into an almost mohawk.
Fresh Cut Grass
Chetney immediately liked Fresh Cut Grass. Moreover, he was very admiring of FCG in their stress-induced raging state, telling them it wasn't entirely bad and was "fucking savage". It was a side of FCG that Chetney hadn't seen since FCG tried to be intimidating when they first met. Chetney was delighted when FCG gave him a wooden toolbox with "RTA" on its side, and responded by gifting FCG an emotional mood indicator.
Imogen Temult
Imogen's was the last of the wooden gift toys given to the members of Bells Hells by Chetney, but made up for it in intricacy. He explained it had taken longer than the others to assemble. It was a wind-up wooden mechanoid horse, which he said represented her favorite horse, Flora. Imogen reacted with awe and delight to the toy.
Laudna
Chetney was at first alarmed by Laudna (though he was hesitantly delighted by Pâté). When they first met, Chetney and Laudna discovered they shared a passion for woodworking and showed each other their favorite tools. During the group's discussion about whether they could trust Chetney after discovering he was a werewolf and had lied, Laudna was the first to say she liked him. When Chetney was upset about missing his chance to sleep with Fearne, Laudna went to his room to comfort him, assuring him it wouldn't be his last chance.
Initially, Chetney was making a wooden girlfriend for Pâté, but after Laudna got Sashimi, he crafted a wooden house for them to carve their own story, which she later turned into a backpack for herself. Laudna was pleased with the gift because it reminded her of the shacks she used to stay in when traveling alone with Pâté. When Laudna died, Chetney persuaded Delilah to let them see her. In Zephrah, he was the first person Laudna told about her relationship with Imogen. When they went skysailing together, Chetney handed her a chisel in case the safety tether was too tight. Both were excited about going on an adventure together and bonding. After getting suits, goggles, and titles, they started dogfighting in the sky, much to the horror of their instructor. Laudna revealed to Chetney that he is quite the inspiration for her, as he accepted his curse and is comfortable with it.
Orym
Chetney gave two carved wooden items to Orym: a small bowl in the shape of a crescent moon, and an intricately carved box with two moons on its top.
It was revealed that four of Orym's childhood toys (including an eagle with jointed wings and two adventurer-like figures) were made by Chetney long before they met. Orym's favorite toy was actually one of the wooden adventurers, the swordsman. Discovering this led them and their friends to joke about the possibility of the gnome being the halfling's biological father, and they even joked about it with each other.
Dorian Storm
Chetney took a great dislike to Dorian when he met him. However, the two warmed up quickly, and Dorian directly called him a friend and a member of the party when patrolling the Moon Tower. When Dorian left Bells Hells to return to Tal'Dorei, Chetney's parting gift to him was a hand-carved wooden toy skyship.
After Dorian returned to the group Chetney was very happy to see him, and they spent time together, regaining some of their old dynamic, although more friendly even when they argued. After they kissed in a game of Spin the Bottle Chetney was left very amazed.
Deanna Leimert
Deanna and Chetney had a romantic relationship hundreds of years ago, that ended before Deanna would have chosen. She still responds badly to mention of Frudell, another former lover of Chetney's, snapping, "We don't talk about her." While Chetney described "nights of white-hot passion", Deanna called it a fling that didn't last that long, although it didn't end when she wanted it to end. Deanna hand knit the hat that Chetney still wears.
When Deanna and Chetney met again during the Apogee Solstice and Chetney's abrupt relocation to the Crystalsands Tundra, they seemed at first wary, although there was still obviously remaining affection and concern. After Chetney (in werewolf form) attacked Deanna's friend F.R.I.D.A., however, Deanna became incandescently furious at Chetney. Despite that tension, both acted relatively friendly around each other, and Chetney was very pleased that Deanna still found him attractive, even in his werewolf form, although he didn't dare to get too close unless the cleric actively made an invitation. This eventually happened, and the two gnomes shared with Fearne a passionate night in the Savalirwood.
When he was knocked unconscious for the second time in the battle against Otohan Thull on Ruidus, he whispered Deanna's name.

Woodcarving
Chetney is very talented working with wood, a skill he has cultivated for a long time, and that he has recently improved supernaturally thanks to the Fatestitcher. According to his fans the C-Poppers, represented by Scalebearer Waylon Amaredda, the toymaker has had seven periods or phases with specific traits during his career:
- One of the ages included the Oblivion Edition, consisting of pieces Chetney was commissioned to create or born from his own inspiration, like five eggs made of moving parts that hid a pearl in the center. He had one of the eggs until he gave it to Ethel Rivergold, other two are owned by Waylon Amaredda and Caleb Widogast respectively, and a fourth (the oldest) was allegedly commissioned by a member of the Unseelie Court.
- One of the ages included the Sensual Collection, consisting of, among other things, functional wooden sex toys.
- The third age included the Take a Load Collection.
- One of the ages might be what Travis Willingham called the "Chair-ra" (or "chair era"), in which the gnome focused on making chairs.
- One of the ages included a collection of beds anatomically designed for people of different races and body types.
- The seventh age, declared by Waylon after seeing Sashimi, is macabre.
As a token of appreciation for their help in finding Gurge Kisgregg, Chetney crafted a unique wooden toy for each member of Bells Hells during their journey:
- An airship with 'S.S. Brontë' engraved on the side for Dorian
- A hand that can be shaped into various gestures for Ashton
- A box adorned with three moons for Orym
- A dollhouse, gifted to Laudna, for Pâté de Rolo and Sashimi
- A wolf figurine for Fearne
- A set of multiple dolls for Fearne
- An emotional expression wheel for Fresh Cut Grass
- A wooden horse for Imogen
Other wooden toys he had finished by the end of the Era of Reclamation were a "tumbling Orym" and a matrioska representing each of the members of Bells Hells.

Behind the scenes
Chetney was conceived as a "true, legit" take on the character Chutney Chocolatecane, a Christmas elf Travis played in " The Night Before Critmas " (Sx41) and in Narrative Telephone's " Chutney's Christmas Vacation "; Campaign Three and the Critical Role special do not share continuity, and the gnome Chetney is distinct from the Christmas elf Chutney.
Chetney bears similar facial scars to his Christmas elf counterpart, and his knit cap alludes to Chutney's Christmas hat; similarly, both are armed with a weaponized wood chisel. As Chutney is a toymaking elf from the North Pole who rues the replacement of wooden toys with plastic ones, so Chetney is a toymaker from the snowbound northern city of Uthodurn who opposes the use of metal instead of wood in craftsmanship. Both Chutney and Chetney committed an act of violence against their former employer (Santa Claus and Oltgar respectively). Snowflakes are depicted in the animation on Chetney's stat card, a further nod to his inspiration, and Chetney, a blood hunter, was initially stated to be a rogue like Chutney.
Travis wanted Chetney to join the party a little later in the story, so Chetney was not introduced until toward the end of " Behind the Curtain " (3x07). Instead, Travis played Bertrand Bell (a returning character) until " The Trail and the Toll " (3x03) and was absent from the table until Chetney's introduction.

Quotations
- Chetney: (on meeting the party) You're awfully nice. I mean, I could be fucking armed to the teeth. You don't know me.
Laudna: Are you armed to the teeth?
Chetney: Yes. - Chetney: (explaining his woodworking past) I started with furniture and there wasn't much of a market for that where I was. I wanted to make something that people loved, so I switched to toys. I'm particularly good at making rocking horses.
- Chetney: I love working with wood.
- Chetney: Woodworking is something I've had a passion for decades, maybe longer. I learned from some of the best. [...] The wood speaks to you. You just have to be ready to listen.
- Dorian: (to Chetney) You have a friend, right? Like a group of friends?
Chetney: I do now. - Chetney: (to Bells Hells) I'm sort of invested because your toys are in production. So, I mean, you could pay me for the services rendered up to this point, or I could continue to engage with you on a professional basis.
- Chetney: (after admitting his lycanthropy to the party) I won't lie. There are some things that I haven't told you yet, but I'm trusting you more, and I have selfish desires. There are people that need to die, and things that need to be righted, but that's down the road.
- Chetney, on multiple occasions: (in his mind) Balls!
- Chetney: When people have holes in their story it usually means they're just leaving out the most important parts.
- Chetney: (charging back into the Otohan battle) I don't want to be the only one not dead.
- (while dying on Ruidus before being brought back) "For 400 years I looked up at the moon. Not a bad place to go."
- Chetney: "That's so strange, I swore I would never make anything out of metal."
