Imogen Temult is a human sorcerer and a member of Bells Hells. She is played by Laura Bailey.

Appearance

When she first appeared, Imogen was introduced as a young human woman with light skin and freckles on her face, with long light-purple hair. She wore a light blue dress and a yellow scarf tied around her neck. Later, just before the party went to Aeor, she altered her clothing slightly so that her sheer dress opened in the front revealing dark blue pants and thigh-high boots. She wore a black buckled bodice harness and the Robe of the Midnight Rune altered to be off-the-shoulder and flowing into strips at the bottom.

When Imogen began to have dreams of the red storm, marks appeared on her arms resembling purple lightning bolts streaking up from her wrists. They have grown slightly over the decade since they first appeared in concordance with the expanding storm. On occasion, when she employs her magic, her eyes briefly flash with white energy, and magical electricity appears to course through her arms. Later, during the apogee solstice, Imogen's marks grew again, reaching her chest and neck, and acquiring a red hue in certain sections starting from where they first appeared. The markings produced a red mist when she later cast magic near the Bloody Bridge in the Tishtan excavation site. After she visited Ruidus and returned to Exandria her marks had grown more, going up the neck and barely reaching her jawline.

Imogen's appearance has temporarily changed a few times due to wild magic surges coming from her Feywild shard. The first time, her skin turned navy blue for a brief time until Fresh Cut Grass cast Remove Curse on her. After a second wild magic surge, Imogen's hair fell out. She was briefly bald and used Chetney's cap and a wig that Dusk made to cover her head. Her hair grew back almost completely within a day.

Several people (including Ebenold Kai, Kadija Sumal and Ludinus Da'leth) have expressed the great resemblance that Imogen bears with her mother.

Personality

Imogen is generally kind and rather soft-spoken, but will advocate for herself when she believes that she is being treated unfairly. She has also proven herself to be a quick thinker, a smooth talker, and a competent strategist.

Imogen is a reserved and reclusive person, shying away from crowds and preferring not to draw attention to herself; Laura Bailey described Imogen as "an attentive, small-town girl" who is "reserved and thoughtful". This is due, in some part, to her ability to hear the thoughts of others: when surrounded by larger numbers of people, opening her mind runs the risk of inviting increasingly dissonant whispers that cloud, and often inundate, her consciousness, or introducing all of the perverted and hateful thoughts that people normally self-censor from actually expressing. She has never been on a date because she would be aware of all her partner's thoughts and it would be too uncomfortable.

When she became friends with Laudna, she through practice became better at "walling off" the unwanted thoughts of others. However, when she has had too much to drink or is excited, she loses that ability and again hears all thoughts around her.

She is curious about the origins of her magic and wants to learn more about her powers, which she finds overwhelming and occasionally struggles to control.

Imogen claimed to have never needed faith in the gods, and that the gods don't mean anything to her. But later, she claimed that she had tried praying for a long time but felt her prayers were unheard or unanswered.

Background

Imogen's home village is Gelvaan (where her father still lives), a place with green fields of tall grass in a plateau valley in the Taloned Highlands. When speaking about her home and her father, she said that she thought he was probably happier now that she had gone since her growing telepathic gifts had made life difficult for both of them, creating distance both between each other and the townspeople. She grew up without her mother, Liliana, believing for a long time that she had died giving birth to her. She was close in age to the eldest children of the local Tildamere family, who weren't very nice to her; as they got older they became more apologetic about it, but the young Temult tended to avoid them anyway. At some point, Imogen and her father both worked for Master Faramore, who owned several stores in Gelvaan, running his stables. She also worked in the stables with a boy named Samuel.

The lightning marks on Imogen's arms appeared when she began having recurring nightmares about a terrifying red storm, seemingly connected to the red moon Ruidus, about ten years ago when she was eighteen. At first she thought they were terrible because they were proof she was different, but when she met and was able to defend Laudna against the other townsfolk when Laudna came to Gelvaan, Imogen began to like them because they showed she was strong.

Laudna and Imogen left Gelvaan together when the inhabitants tried to violently remove Laudna from it, and Imogen saved her in an impressive, but also violent magical way. It was the first time she had ever done anything like that, and the first time she realized she could. They were forced to go on the run from the townsfolk. Her father did nothing to help, having been distancing himself from her for years.

Imogen and Laudna had only been in Jrusar for about a month before meeting the rest of Bells Hells. During that time the sorcerer started learning how to keep mental walls to avoid reading other people's thoughts, although when there were too many of them, or if Imogen was intoxicated or particularly excited she would end up reading thoughts accidentally.

Relvin Temult

Relvin Temult and his daughter were presumably close once, but he withdrew from her after she developed her psychic abilities. She speculates that part of the reason he started avoiding her was so he wouldn't accidentally reveal something about her mother, a subject he had always avoided. Imogen believes that her father is probably better off and happier without her home, and that her leaving was inevitable. She also thinks that he wouldn't welcome her return, as he doesn't like having his thoughts read. Despite this rift between them, she has no ill-will towards him, showing concern for his well-being after offering him up as collateral to the Hubatt Corsairs, and telling her friends that he's "great".

When Imogen finally visited Gelvaan, Relvin was tense, and so was she, but despite their flawed relationship they were still on speaking terms, and neither wanted the father to fear her daughter for who she was. Weeks later, when she contacted him via Sending before an important mission they exchanged some words, although Relvin didn't tell her that he loved her; Imogen didn't expect him to do so either, given the nature of their current relationship, and was at peace with the fact that he had done what he could as a father figure in complicated circumstances.

Liliana Temult

Imogen believed that her mother had died when she was a baby, so for a long time she cherished the connection she still had with her, researching about her and the powers they shared, and having conflicted feelings about her voice in her nightmares. When she discovered that Liliana was still alive, every interaction between them had some tension, but deep down the Exaltant hoped she could reconnect with her mother and separate her from the Ruby Vanguard. However, Liliana turned out to be very involved with the organization, and even despite her daughter's pleas she was convinced that her own plans were the best, both for her and for Imogen.

After the general ignored her daughter's words at the beginning of apogee solstice Imogen has lost hope of getting her mother back. During Bells Hells' team building exercise in honesty, she admitted that she was genuinely afraid to meet her mother again.

Liliana seems to be alarmed by the idea of Imogen getting too close to Predathos. Imogen, in turn, is increasingly disenchanted with the idea of recovering her mother, and after learning about her reputation in Ruidus, she has decided to position herself as her enemy, at least when it comes to dealing with the Volition; even after trying to persuade her one last time through dreams, Imogen seems determined to face her mother, despite not liking the idea. However, the following day, when they finally met face to face (after Liliana survived an assassination attempt) Imogen, through persuasion and omission of truth, convinced her mother to at least meet Bells Hells again to talk. Despite everything that has happened, Imogen is certain that she doesn't hate her mother, and deep down she feels like she can trust her, although the possibility of being wrong about it worries her very much.

Laudna

Imogen is Laudna's closest ally, whom Laudna met while she was in Imogen's town a couple of years ago. They "hit it off real well" and decided to start traveling together. They share a goal: to try to enter one of the conservatories located in the Spires so Imogen can do research. They have been staying together in Jrusar with their landlady, Zhudanna.

Although they had a brief estrangement when Laudna accidentally destroyed an item of Imogen's, they soon reconciled, and remained close friends, with Imogen being the main advocate of resurrecting Laudna when she was killed, and the one who most aggressively wanted revenge on Delilah for manipulating her. In more recent times both sorcerers have expressed their mutual affection and love, being each other's support, and showing similar concern whenever they were separated. When they were reunited and left alone for a bit they kissed each other twice.

During Bells Hells' team building exercise in honesty, Imogen admitted that although she loves Laudna deeply, she is disgusted at the thought of Delilah Briarwood watching them all the time. A few days later, when talking with Laudna, Imogen admitted some resentment about the archmage's return, even suggesting that the warlock had somehow "invited" her back, although she didn't press the matter, and their conversation ended on a good note with them exchanging a kiss. After the incident in which Delilah pushed Laudna to steal Orym's new sword, Imogen and Laudna had a conversation about the latter's patron, and Laudna said that she was willing to "wield" Delilah as a weapon to defeat Ludinus, even if that meant sacrificing herself and her own happiness. That made Imogen sad, but that night, even though Laundna tried to give her some space, they ended up holding hands in their sleep. The following day Imogen wasn't completely certain if she was single or in a relationship at the moment, although she did know she didn't want to pursue a new one. However, hours later, after they managed to successfully seal Delilah inside the Pinion of Service, effectively leaving her powerless and isolated, the girlfriends reconciled and had a romantic night not having to worry about the warlock's patron.

In the months that followed the end of the Era of Reclamation, between adventures, the two sorcerers eloped, a private event in their cottage.

Notable items

Former items

  • Gnarlrock shards: One was taken from the Shade Mother's lair in Underrush Mines, then given to Laudna and broken by Delilah Briarwood. A second gnarlrock shard was taken by Fearne from the Calloways' hideout and placed in Imogen's bag. Imogen gave it to Pike Trickfoot to research before the party went into Delilah's spirit realm and it was apparently not returned
  • Pâté de Rolo, a puppet made by Laudna, taken by Imogen after Laudna's death and returned after her resurrection
  • Tracking orb attuned to the ring originally planted on Armand Treshi, taken by Imogen after Laudna's death and returned after her resurrection
  • A locket on a silver chain with Imogen's baby fingerprint, inscribed "The better halves become a better whole," once worn by Liliana and given by Relvin to Imogen, who gave it back to her mother

Abilities

Imogen has a homebrewed ability, Open Mind, where she has constant, passive access to other people's thoughts. She normally suppresses this ability, but using this feature mechanically represents her lowering her guard against these thoughts and allowing herself to hear them.

  • Open Mind: Imogen attempts to read another's thoughts, similar to casting Detect Thoughts. She makes a Wisdom saving throw with a DC based on how many people are within 30 feet of her, and if she fails she makes Constitution saving throws to maintain concentration at disadvantage for the rest of the day.
  • Call Ruidus: (possibly related to Essence of the Red Moon) Imogen said she was "taking three" and rolled three dice for damage to herself, then four dice for lightning damage to her enemy.
  • Essence of the Red Moon (to use through Fearne or another Ruidusborn; possibly connected to her Ruidus-themed feat): She can share her Flexible Casting trait, being able to spend sorcery points "to replenish target Ruidusborn of their expended spell slots." In the same way, the other Ruidusborn can expend spell slots to create a number of sorcery points for Imogen equal to the level of the slot used. This ability is limited to use on Ruidus itself.

Imogen can replace one leveled sorcerer spell she knows when she gains a level in the class, can replace one cantrip each time she reaches a level that grants an Ability Score Increase, and can replace one of her Psionic Spells with any divination or enchantment spell of the same level when she gains a level, so she may no longer know all of these spells.

Behind the scenes

After playing the outgoing Jester Lavorre in Campaign Two, Laura Bailey said that playing a "reserved and thoughtful" character like Imogen was difficult. She wanted Imogen to be constantly bombarded by other people's thoughts, thus she and Matt developed her Open Mind ability to mechanically represent Imogen trying to wall herself off from hearing them at all times. Part of the inspiration behind the sorcerer's powers and dreams were Laura's own nightmares about tornadoes and her experience with overwhelming auditory stimuli.

Matthew Mercer was the one who proposed that the storm should be red, although without knowing that Laura had originally considered naming her sorcerer "Red" (after an old cowboy the actress knew during her childhood). Matt also revealed that due to her dark fey connections, Fearne was intended to be the original Ruidusborn connected to the red moon plot in Campaign Three, but when Laura talked to him about Imogen's dreams, he decided to make both of them Ruidusborn, and ended up exploring the latter's connection with Ruidus more.

Quotations

  • Laudna: I'm fun-scary!
    Imogen: Laudna, you’re scary-scary.
  • (to Bertrand, after his death) "I'm glad the noise has stopped for you. I'm glad you're at peace."
  • "Everyone, everything, is just so much. But -- and it's the same sort of feeling that I had with Laudna the first time I met her. It was there, she was there, but she was almost like a different... a different pitch than everybody else. It was musical, it wasn't painful like everybody else."
  • Imogen: It feels like if that storm catches me, I'll be gone. Just gone.
Laudna: Well, I certainly can't lose you.
  • (to Laudna, after the gnarlrock shard was destroyed) "You lied."
  • (after Otohan Thull's attack) You'll just keep hearing in your heads, over and over again: "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry!"
  • "Laudna, you're back. I can't possibly be sad right now."
  • Imogen: My mom was trying to show me a world that would be freeing if I just went back to being normal. But, I feel like—I feel like our weirdness is what makes us right. Is that dumb?
    Laudna: Not at all.
Imogen:This locket, it says, "The better halves make a better whole." You have to love it all.
Laudna: I don't mind being your better half!
  • "You're my tether, Laudna. Sometimes I feel like I'm about to float away, but as long as you're there..."
  • (to Laudna) "Can I kiss you? I can't tell if it's all right or not anymore."
  • "I've heard everything inside of you, Laudna. You are not a bad person. I called you my anchor, my tether. We're that for each other."
  • Imogen: Ashton, you're so special.
Ashton: I know. That's why I am fighting for you. It's because you're fucking special too, and we all know it.
  • Groon: But you are of the Storm, are you not?
Imogen: I am the Storm, baby.
  • Liliana: You just need to run away.
    Imogen: I'm not running anymore.
