Fjord (pronounced "Ford") is a half-orc warlock/paladin and member of the Mighty Nein. He is played by Travis Willingham.

Appearance

Fjord is a half-orc with green skin, yellow eyes with vertical slit pupils, and black hair with a lock of gray. He has notable scars on the left side of his face, an X-shaped pair on his forehead that cuts through his brow past his eye and one through his upper lip. He is about 6'1". He has been described as handsome by multiple characters, including Jester Lavorre, Beauregard Lionett, Caleb Widogast and Nott. Over the course of their journey, he let his hair grow out. When it got a bit longer in " With Great Power..." (2x94), Fjord, with Beau's assistance, tied it into a small topknot after watching Caleb tie his hair. He also started growing out his beard, with the first noticeable stubble appearing in " Bathhouses and Bastions " (2x90) after a day at the spa. By the time the party headed to Aeor, his beard was fully grown.

At the start of the campaign, his orc tusks were intentionally shortened and not visible when his mouth is closed; the tusks have scratches, divots, and chips across the top. After " A Favor in Kind " (2x16), he decided to stop shortening them, and by " Clay and Dust " (2x72), they had grown back enough to be casually visible.

At the beginning of the campaign, Fjord wore beat-up, piecemeal leather armor. While having an enchantment transferred onto his armor by Pumat Sol, Fjord also had his armor cleaned up. He additionally purchased a Cloak of Protection from The Invulnerable Vagrant when he collected enough gold and wore it for most of his journey. Following his first vision from the Wildmother, Fjord etched wave designs into his armor as they traveled to the King's Cage. As the Nein prepared to head to Aeor, Fjord purchased warmer clothes for the harsher climate. Unlike the others, he didn't have his custom-made. Later in " The Chase Begins " (2x112), when they found an animal pelt in a wreck, he attached it to his new cloak.

During the battle with Cree in the tunnels beneath Cognouza, Fjord acquired a red eye on his left palm. Upon Lucien's final defeat, the eye vanished from his person.

Following his pact with Zehir, a mark in form of black rune is burnt into Fjord's chest. After successfully sealing Uk'otoa, the Wildmother removed the mark from his chest.

In the following years, Fjord grew a well-groomed and trimmed mustache and beard, and wore new black metal armor with his sea-themed symbol of the Wildmother and waves etched into it, layered over his old leather armor. He also wore dark green, thicker-looking clothes with a long cloak on top. At some point after sealing Uk'otoa, he began to wear looser, bolder clothing, gained more muscular mass, shaved his mustache and beard, and grew his hair beyond his shoulders. Moreover, he got a full-sleeve tattoo on his right arm depicting waves and Uk'otoa's scaly rings with eyes, extending to his neck and chest.

Personality

Fjord is described as a strong silent type, and he tends to keep a cool and rational frame of mind. Though willing to break rules when needed, he seems to operate under certain principles of honor, claiming that he tries to be honest and he thinks people should do what they say they will. However, when he raised the question with his other party members of whether they would hijack a caravan, Fjord told the thievery-prone Nott that he did not want to change her behavior to be more lawful and that he might take her up on the offer to learn how to steal.

Fjord is able to change his voice with ease and magically alter his appearance at will, and he is eager to use his talents to get the party out of difficult situations. He initially spoke mimicking Vandran's accent (a Texan English) around the other party members, using only his natural accent (a light English accent) during dreams with his warlock patron or when alone. Jester Lavorre implied to him that she felt this was his way of mourning Vandran, and that he would stop if they found Vandran alive, although Fjord did not confirm that. Fjord himself said that he felt mimicking Vandran's voice allowed him an ability to be listened to that he never possessed before, which "felt better". He began to fully use his own voice again in " Clay and Dust " (2x72) after breaking his warlock pact and coming to feel that imitating Vandran no longer suited or served him.

Fjord was shown multiple times to be ready to put himself in dangerous situations to protect the party and ensure everyone got out safely, as he usually could teleport out. But even in " The King's Cage " (2x69), where he used his last spell to attempt to get Yasha out of the King's Cage and could no longer teleport, he still chose to stay in the chamber to assist everyone in escaping. This led to him being almost killed by a controlled Yasha while held by the Laughing Hand. As most of the party began panicking while hiding from Gelidon in " Fair-weather Faith " (2x123), Fjord knew that one breath attack from the ancient dragon would badly hurt most of them. So, he chose to fly out of his hiding spot to distract the dragon from the group's location while they prepared for a fight. On the same day, after being betrayed by the Tombtakers who were about to kill some members of the party, Fjord once again teleported into the middle of the enemy group to give the others a chance to escape while Lucien and the Tombtakers focused on him. He was even willing to stay behind and sacrifice himself if it meant the others could get to safety. But when everyone made it to Beau, who was transformed into a mammoth, Fjord managed to teleport to the rest of the Nein. As they prepared for their final battle against the Tombtakers in " Aeor " (2x132), he was ready to fight to his last breath, noting to Beau that there was no running for him.

Beneath his mysterious exterior, Fjord appears to harbor deep-seated insecurities about how he is perceived by others and shortens his tusks to appear more approachable. He has some body image issues; he sees himself as "misproportioned" compared to other orcish children and feels the need to look more muscular around full-blood orcs. He has no desire to lose the magical powers he has obtained because he feels like who he was before he got them was not a person worth being. When he eventually lost his powers in " Clay and Dust " (2x72), he downplayed his abilities and told the others that he would just be a liability, though they tried to reassure him that he was quite an asset, as he had been able to get them out of several dangerous situations using only his words. In " Uthodurn " (2x73), even without his magic, he was ready to put himself in danger for the others once again, holding off a giant remorhaz using only a whip and his own strength. After the fight, Fjord was willing to stay in front of the group in case something attacked again.

Background

Fjord was orphaned and grew up in the Driftwood Asylum orphanage in Port Damali in the Menagerie Coast. He does not know who his parents were, and his earliest memories are of the Driftwood Asylum. Grankton, the headmaster of the orphanage, gave him the last name "Stone" to remind him that he had been cast aside, like a stone. Life in the orphanage was difficult: the orphanage was associated with the Myriad, and the children were set to work creating wooden goods for sale.

He described himself as a chubby, short, mis-proportioned stumpy kid with big teeth. He was the only half-orc child in the orphanage, and the other children teased him relentlessly for being different; the leader of those bullies was Sabian, a half-elf and a cruel boy, although popular with the other orphans, and he enjoyed bullying Fjord and making the other children behave in a similar way, both in private and during tasks Headmaster Grankton gave the children. The hurtful comments about his appearance, particularly those about his tusks, drove Fjord to shorten them himself to ward off the teasing. Because his tusks continually grow, Fjord began shortening them regularly, despite how painful it was; he claimed he continued to do so in adulthood out of habit, not "necessarily" because he felt the same about his tusks as in childhood, but he generally remained self-conscious when others noticed his tusks.

He eventually worked at the docks, at one point loading and off-loading goods for the Pink Giver. Around 822 PD Captain Vandran of the Tide's Breath arrived at the orphanage looking for new crew members, and Fjord volunteered, despite the fact that Sabian was going too. They both spent many years as part of the merchant ship's crew, and Fjord worked primarily as a boatswain, with some additional responsibilities in barrel-keeping, and ultimately became the ship's first mate and quartermaster. Vandran grew fond of Fjord, mentoring him throughout the years, and they developed a close personal relationship in which Fjord considered him like a father and Vandran grew paternally protective of Fjord. During that whole period Sabian didn't show his dislike towards Fjord openly, but he subtly worked against him, once even trying to dump him overboard.

In early 835 PD, Fjord briefly met Jester Lavorre in Port Damali while she was searching for her father, who was a sailor, along the Coast and playing tricks on people. He saw her multiple times in the city afterward. Shortly after, he left Port Damali aboard the Tide's Breath for an unknown port west of Darktow.

As the ship returned, Sabian decided to sabotage the ship: Fjord walked in on Sabian lighting a fuse in the cargo hold, but before he could react the half-elf wounded him with throwing daggers, ran to the deck of the ship, and jumped into the ocean. Fjord was knocked into the water by the explosion (for further detail, see: Tide's Breath). Panicked and desperate, the half-orc subconsciously agreed to a pact with Uk'otoa to avoid fatally drowning; upon waking on the shore of Bisaft Isle, he could not remember the pact. discovering his new falchion and powers. He returned to Port Damali to investigate Vandran's warehouse there, finding that Sabian had survived and had come to raid the place shortly before his arrival. Multiple people in Port Damali quickly noticed that the Tide's Breath and its crew did not return, except for Sabian and Fjord.

Because Fjord's survival of the sinking was met with suspicion, he left the city (using the magic he had just acquired) and, remembering that Jester cast spells, pursued her to the next town over. Jester could not help him in understanding his magic, so he decided to travel to the Soltryce Academy in Rexxentrum in the Dwendalian Empire. He asked if she would like to accompany him, and she agreed. During their time traveling to the Empire, Fjord changed his bearing and accent to imitate Vandran. After about a week and a half of travel along the Amber Road, they arrived in Trostenwald and, about a day or two before " Curious Beginnings " (2x01), met Beauregard Lionett. The three of them saved the daughter of Rinaldo, a fisherman in town, from a giant snake.

Campaign Three: Bells Hells

During the Apogee Solstice of 843 PD, the Mighty Nein reformed to recapture Trent Ikithon, able to escape his bonds due to the magical disruption plaguing the land. He travelled with them to Rexxentrum, where they discovered the archmage's secret dungeon beneath his prison. Fjord, standing behind their new friend (and investigator) Aggy as he explored, got a lungful of dust as the latter disintegrated. Through the use of several Magic Mouths, Caleb was invited by Trent to return to his childhood home, Blumenthal. After a night in the tower, the Mighty Nein travelled with him, very aware they were walking into a trap. As Caleb entered to the sound of laughing and merriment, Fjord used the Star Razor to detect the presence of two undead within - presumed to be the animated corpses of Caleb's parents, Leofric and Una. Fjord and Jester quickly followed him in to provide support in the ensuing conversation. Once she had heard enough, Jester apologised to Caleb and cast Turn Undead on his parents. Trent responded with a Fireball in the center of the room, sundering the table and the home at once, but Fjord and Jester took minimal damage due to his Blast Scepter and her Ring of Fire Resistance.

As the battle progressed and Trent hit them with a potent Meteor Swarm, it became clear that Trent wasn't really before them, which Fjord confirmed with an Eldritch Blast. Instead, he chose to aid Beau in finishing off the now ghoulish and burning form of Leofric with the rest of the Blasts. Meanwhile, outside, after being accosted with an Anti-Magic Field by Jester, Trent chose to break a strange webbed egg-like artifact, releasing the essence of Omentis and binding it to himself. In this process, he became a massive demonic entity who immediately began to stride toward the centre of the village. Fjord immediately used the Star Razor to cast Fly, keeping up with the demon and striking it consistently. The battle became a kaiju battle, with Caleb and his Simulacrum taking the forms of Gelidon and a T-Rex, respectively. Managing to climb the figure, and aided by Caduceus turning its flesh translucent, Beau ripped the egg from its chest and tossed it to Caleb, who blasted it with ice, ending the battle. Returning to his true form, Caleb sent the egg into a Demiplane, and the party agreed to celebrate and clean up the town. Suddenly, Fjord asked Jester to marry him, to which she said yes - and the pair kissed as Artagan conjured flowers around them.

After dealing with Trent Ikithon, Fjord and the rest of the Mighty Nein continued traveling together on another mission. During this time, they were contacted by Allura Vysoren, who believed they were best suited to handle a threat known as the Weave Mind on Ruidus, while another group called Bells Hells would take on Ludinus Da'leth. Eventually, the two groups converged near Lake Umamu, where the portal to Ruidus was located. Upon meeting Bells Hells, Fjord reminded everyone that minotaurs were Veth's weakness, and was convinced that Chetney Pock O'Pea wasn't actually part of Bells Hells but simply an innkeeper. When Jester enthusiastically introduced herself as "Pirate Jester," Fjord, weary, gently reminded her that she didn't need to be a pirate every time she introduced herself, noting that she had been calling herself that for a couple of years now just to impress new people. The half-orc introduced himself as Fjord Stone, claiming to be a merchant from Stone's Throw Shipping, while Jester added that he was an admiral with multiple fleets. When everyone got excited about pirates, Fjord remarked that they might as well be space pirates now, given their mission to the moon. He introduced Jester as his fiancée, which surprised Veth, who angrily pointed out that Fjord hadn't bought her a new ring. The couple, however, decided to consider the Ring of Fire Resistance as the wedding ring due to its sentimental value. The situation grew tense when Braius, a minotaur who kept glaring at Jester, accused her of ruining his life by vandalizing a temple in Zadash. Fjord tried to diffuse the hostility, but Yasha stepped in, eager for a fight. The half-orc managed to calm them down, suggesting they settle things after sharing a meal. The Mighty Nein followed their new companions to a lake portal, and Fjord summoned his blade, Star Razor, to light the way as they traveled to Ruidus, the red moon.

Dorian Storm and the others celebrated loudly upon arrival, but Fjord quickly hushed them to avoid drawing unwanted attention. He joked to Jester that they could spend their honeymoon on the moon, and Jester suggested having a small wedding right then and there since they might not survive. While the others cheered at the idea, Fjord quickly declined, and Jester agreed. The group teleported to a shop in Kreviris and rested in Widogast's Nascent Nein-Sided Tower. Fjord, struggling with his cat allergies, kept to himself until Beau brought him some whiskey and asked for his thoughts on their new allies. He doubted Bells Hells would survive the battle and wanted to focus on their own mission, though the duo agreed to step in if the other team failed. That night, Jester asked Fjord if he regretted proposing since he had declined the small ceremony they’d been offered earlier. Fjord immediately reassured her, saying he’d never regret it. He wanted her to have the real wedding she deserved and saw waiting as a promise that they’d both make it back alive. He shared how excited he was to see the wedding that Jester’s imagination would create and asked her to promise there wouldn’t be any cats. Just then, Pâté de Rolo, whom Jester had borrowed from Laudna, interrupted them. Mistaking him for a threat, Fjord blasted him with an Eldritch Blast, destroying him. Jester quickly explained that she and Laudna had exchanged pets for a day, with Laudna taking their weasel, Sprinkle, and Fjord promised to sort it out in the morning. The next day, Jester and Fjord told Laudna that Pâté had left to explore the moon. However, Fjord eventually confessed he had mistaken Pâté for an enemy and accidentally killed him. Laudna forgave him, revealing she could summon Pâté back at any time. Disguised as Reilorans and Bormodos, the group departed the tower and soon arrived at a shrine-like garden encircled by Reilorans and filled with relics from Exandria, where they also discovered a petrified Planerider Ryn. Fjord grabbed Caduceus and cast Major Illusion to create an enormous red tornado above them, using Marine Layer to mask them as they moved directly beneath the storm toward the statue. Using Greater Restoration, Caduceus successfully freed Ryn, and Fjord introduced them as allies of Bells Hells. However, Ryn teleported away using what the warlock recognized as Dimension Door before they could fully explain. A massive vidulch began pursuing the illusory storm, and as everyone blended in with the crowd, Fjord sent the storm in another direction, prompting the creature to follow it. As the skies darkened, Veth nervously asked if the ominous weather was Fjord’s doing, and he joked about accumulating power on his sea journey. The party finally reached the Volition safe house, where Jester helped them get into the tunnels overlooking the subterranean city of Kreviris. Needing to meet Gaz Tomo, a Volition member, they strategized how to descend safely. Fjord offered to bring them closer to their destination using a gate and then pointed to a deserted alley where a portal suddenly appeared, created with Arcane Gate. The gate transported them near the meeting place undetected, and soon they rendezvoused with Gaz, taking a brief rest. During this time, Jester and Imogen contacted Allura to prepare the attack on the Malleus Key. While resting, Bells Hells deliberated on their plan to release Predathos as a means of forcing the gods to leave Exandria. However, Fjord, Yasha, and Caduceus opposed the idea, recalling how the gods had saved both Fjord and Yasha in the past. Ultimately, they agreed to trust the other team to make the right decision when the time came. As they waited for the signal, Jester and Fjord discussed colors for their wedding, and Beau revealed that she wanted to be Fjord’s best man. Jester, flustered, admitted she had planned to ask Beau to be her maid of honor. Before Fjord could respond, Fearne and Braius remarked on his seeming hesitation about the wedding. Fjord denied it, explaining that his thoughts were preoccupied with the upcoming battle.

The teams soon split up, with the Mighty Nein joining the Volition to infiltrate the Arx Creonum and eliminate the Weave Mind. Upon reaching a towering belfry topped with a dark metal bell, the Mighty Nein, alongside Gaz, used a metal cable to propel themselves toward the citadel. Fjord flew close by, ready to assist anyone who fell. When Jester’s and Yasha’s harnesses snapped mid-journey, Fjord swiftly caught Jester, carrying her to the citadel, while Caleb, in eagle form, rescued Yasha. The team reached a damaged section of the Arx Creonum but was immediately ambushed by multiple reiloran defenders near the opening. Still carrying Jester, Fjord unleashed his Eldritch Blast to take down a Reiloran Juggernaut attacking Beau. In retaliation, he was struck by a feskul, but the half-orc continued to fly toward the opening. Once everyone had made it inside, Jester let go of Fjord and leaped to join the rest of the Nein. The warlock then killed the feskul, ensuring it could not follow them, before flying into the citadel to join the others. As the group pressed on, Veth encouraged Fjord to use his navigation skills and take the lead, betting 500 gold against Beau that he would fail to guide them to the Weave Mind. Despite her wager, Fjord successfully navigated the party to their destination: a pyramid-shaped room with two double doors. He immediately inspected the right door and cast See Invisibility. Through the spell, he spotted two magically cloaked figures, each focused on separate glass pillars. A voice echoed in his mind, welcoming him and asking if he had come to converse. When Fjord declined, the figures used their psychic powers to pull him into the room. Caleb intercepted with Telekinesis, preventing Fjord from being dragged in.

Fjord quickly cast Faerie Fire to reveal the figures to the party, but the creatures evaded the spell. He then used Far Step to teleport behind one of the Reiloran leaders, catching sight of a massive Ruidian glass archway. Through it, he glimpsed a faint vision of a battlefield on Exandria, where opposing forces clashed. Seeing her captain vanish, Beau activated her Empty Body ability to turn invisible and followed him. She engaged the invisible foe he was facing, landing several strikes before Fjord stopped her to question the Weave Mind about their purpose. Telepathically, the Weave Mind revealed that they were vessels of Predathos, working to secure the future of their people on the Blue Dream. They criticized the inhabitants of Exandria for taking their world for granted. Hoping to aid the party, Fjord tried to persuade the Weave Mind to reveal themselves, arguing it would facilitate communication. However, when the creature continued to float away, Beau resumed her assault. The Weave Mind projected their voices telepathically to the entire party. Realizing the creatures had no intention of reasoning with them, the Mighty Nein pressed their attack. Since Fjord was the only one who could see all five figures, Jester used her Divine Intervention, making the Weave Mind visible to everyone. The Weave Mind retaliated with Horrid Puppet, attempting to infiltrate Fjord’s mind, but he easily resisted, grounding himself with thoughts of Jester and their bachelor party. Caduceus followed with his own Divine Intervention, rendering the crystals that empowered their enemies vulnerable. Seizing the opportunity, Fjord teleported to the central crystal and shattered it with Star Razor. The entire room trembled as the crystal broke. Beau, recognizing the crystals were linked to the Weave Mind’s power, alerted the group. Fjord unleashed a series of Eldritch Blasts, destroying more crystals while the rest of the party focused on attacking the Weave Mind. The five Reilorans turned their fury on Fjord, but before they could strike, he pretended to fall off a ledge, only to teleport to safety beneath a bridge. Yasha managed to kill one of the Reilorans, while Beau, Fjord, and Jester focused their attacks on a prone member of the Weave Mind, weakening the creature enough for Caleb to deliver the finishing blow, bringing the battle to an end.

Fjord was present with the rest of the Mighty Nein at the Matron of Ravens' invocation of the Rites of Catatheosis and the gods becoming mortal. During the subsequent council regarding the Ruidian refugees, Fjord suggested that they should aid them in the journey and possibly establish trade relations. He and Jester promised to protect Braius if he ever needed it, and invited him to stay at the Lavish Chateau, with Fjord adding that the Ruby of the Sea could use some extra muscle. Some time later, the couple received a wooden statuette of a jellyfish from Chetney Pock O'Pea as an engagement gift. The carving reminded them of an event they had experienced on their first sea voyage with the Mighty Nein, leaving Fjord wondering how the old gnome knew about it. As they talked, Fjord shared his plans to help out on the moon and suggested spending some time there with Jester to scout potential wedding locations. He eagerly expressed his excitement about the wedding and told her he wanted Beau to be his best man. To his surprise, she agreed but immediately declared that the rest of the Mighty Nein would be her maids of honor, with the Traveler officiating the ceremony. Fjord tried to protest, but Artagan, who had been listening in, was already on board.

Months after the end of the Era of Reclamation, Fjord and the rest of the Mighty Nein had to deal with the Cult of the Cloaked Serpent in the tunnels beneath Rexxentrum. As they delved deeper, they were confronted by an ethereal-looking naga who was ready to devour them. However, just as it prepared to strike, most of the Mighty Nein suddenly disappeared, leaving only Fjord and Yasha. At first, the duo was worried, but then they drew their swords and prepared to face the naga.

" Tag Team at the Teeth – The Misty Ascent " (Sx97) and " Tag Team at the Teeth – Beyond the Shroud " (Sx98)

A few weeks after that, and after avoiding angry religious people from Vasselheim for some time, Bells Hells and the Mighty Nein (who had given them protection) traveled to the Shattered Teeth after they learned that Ludinus might be hiding there. However, when the Nein Heroez arrived to Evaterena, a magical mist surrounding the island split the group while they were still on the ship, leaving half of them in the physical half of the island, while the others were sent to the spiritual half. Fjord was among the latter, and from the moment they arrived he and Caduceus noticed the negative energy in the area; when the paladin used his sword to illuminate the area, they saw several spirits moving away. They met Ethel Rivergold, a local bard with confusing memories that told them that they were in some sort of spirit realm; some of the entities there actually communicated with them, although one of them attacked Fearne in the form of a venomous snake, so Fjord had to heal her. He and Braius led the group as they traveled towards a cave Ethel had told them about, although on their way there they reached a strange dark curtain that weakened both of them when they touched it.

When they reached the cave they had to fight some ghosts, and Fjord panicked at first when he saw the captain, until they realized she wasn't Avantika; the undead sailor, nonetheless, proved to be dangerous, and started attacking Fjord without stopping, not even when Star Razor produced radiant energy to repel her. Eventually they defeated the ghosts, and continued; they then reached the area beneath the local mountain, partially destroyed, and there they found the source of the corruption and magical effects of the island: the spiritual form of the fractured titan. A new battle ensued, during which the auras of both Fjord and Braius helped protect the party; during the fight the half-orc realized that the radiant damage wasn't very effective against their enemy, he attacked with a Cone of Cold instead, and eventually they defeated the titan.

With that, the island returned to normal (fusing physical and spiritual), and when the rest of the adventurers arrived with a goliath bard of their own, so did the two Ethels, revealing their/his identity as the Spirit of Evaterena, an embodiment of the island itself. After that, Ethel offered the adventurers to celebrate by drinking from strange shoe-like mugs, and they agreed, with Caleb casting his Widogast's Nascent Nein-Sided Tower so that they could do so in presence of all his cats.

" Jester and Fjord's Wedding - Live from Radio City Music Hall " (Sx103)

On the eve of his wedding to Jester, Fjord celebrated his bachelor party with Beau and Caleb, during which there was much chaos and they committed a series of crimes including the theft of a boat (which they later returned to port); however, they made it back safely (albeit very drunk) to the Lavish Chateau before dawn. After recovering somewhat with the help of the potions Beau had with her, they met up with Jester and the rest of the Mighty Nein, having a brief chat (during which Caleb made the bride Invisible again when Veth pointed out that she and the groom shouldn't see each other yet), after which they went to get ready; while the group was together Caleb also used that chance to present his wedding present for the couple: the Hidden Haven amulets (which they liked a lot). At the Mother's Lighthouse, while he was preparing, Fjord heard a noise at the door and with his Divine Sense he perceived a fey presence: it turned out to be Nugget, who started licking him and messing with his hair until Beau made him teleport away throwing some pocket bacon for him to eat; Fjord was still nervous, particularly about the vows, so Caleb cast Fortune's Favor on him so he wouldn't ruin it when the moment came.

The ceremony finally started, and everything was going great until the moment of the vows; then, Depherad Kolios (the wedding planner) interrupted the ceremony by unleashing fey magic that transported the Mighty Nein (minus Essek and Kingsley) to a Demiplane, paralyzing everyone but Jester and Beau. It was revealed then that Depherad had been replaced by Isharnai, the hag Jester had tricked years before, who now wanted revenge. Fjord used Misty Step to appear next to his bride, even while paralyzed, but he ended up falling to the ground, while the cleric tried to talk her way out of trouble, even offering the hag a place in one of Fjord's many ships. Jester tried to make Isharnai feel appreciated but refused to deny that her feelings for her groom were more important, so they ended up fighting. As soon as the paralysis ended, Veth cast Haste on Fjord (telling him it was her wedding present for him) before hiding, and he, after Counterspelling a magical effect from the hag, unleashed a wave of attacks against her, combining slashes from Star Razor and Eldritch Blast. Things got worse after Isharnai managed to hit Jester with her amulet: the cleric then looked at Fjord without recognizing him and flirted with him, asking him his plans for later, and stopping immediately when he, very confused, told her he was getting married. The fight continued, and Fjord once more dealt so much damage that the enemy tried to Heal herself, being Counterspelled by Caleb; the latter ended up defeating her with a Disintegrate, and when Isharnai was preparing to teleport away, Fjord, Beau, and Yasha hit her amulet together, destroying it and restoring the memories she had been stealing from Jester.

The adventuring party returned to the wedding to the moment in which they left, as if nothing had happened, and the ceremony continued. Fjord and Jester exchanged vows and rings (with him overcoming his nervousness, encouraged by Marion), and they kissed as husband and wife. Then they all went back to the Lavish Chateau and celebrated the happy couple, with their friends giving multiple speeches.

Beauregard

Beauregard and Fjord met a day before the events of " Curious Beginnings " (2x01). Beau instinctively trusted Fjord by the time of " A Show of Scrutiny " (2x02), relying on his instructions in order to act more "manly" for a disguise. Fjord eventually started guiding Beau towards less hostile forms of social interaction, to mixed success. The two joined a meeting of The Knights of Requital together and did not reveal what they witnessed to the other members of the Mighty Nein, though Caleb saw the first meeting they attended through Frumpkin.

Beau thinks that she and Fjord have similar moral perspectives.

After the rest of the party was rescued from the Iron Shepherds, Beau and Caleb assured Fjord that what happened was not his fault but rather Lorenzo's. The two have a great respect for one another's abilities and have formed a close friendship, often going to one another for advice. They have also made an agreement to keep each other in check. Beau put herself forward as Fjord's first mate while at sea, a position she seems to take seriously.

During a conversation on whether to seek out the families of those with connections in the Empire, Beau confided in Fjord about her family's abandonment of her and the birth of her baby brother. Fjord had seemed confused at first as to why she was hesitant to reconnect with her family, but on learning this he accepted her decision. Fjord advised Beau to consider her baby brother's innocence.

While the Mighty Nein were in Zadash on the search for the old hag who had cursed Nott, the group stopped in the Evening Nip for the night. Noticing that Beau was more reserved than usual, Fjord comforted her. In turn, Beau confided that she was struggling with the idea of seeing her dad again. Beau also told Fjord, "You're still my captain."

Fjord was very vocal that he was not okay with the deal Beau wanted to make with Isharnai, as the deal would have meant Beau had to leave her friends and her life at the Cobalt Soul behind. One night, as Fjord came under attack by Uk'otoa's minions while the rest of the crew was in their respective cabins, Beau immediately rushed to his aid instead of staying below deck. However, despite her efforts, she found herself incapacitated, unable to offer much assistance as Fjord fell unconscious from the mast to the deck, prompting her to quickly alert the others.

During a discussion among the members of the Mighty Nein on Rumblecusp about their plans following their separation, Beau turned to Fjord for advice. Expressing her admiration and respect for him, she confessed that a part of her envisioned sailing the seas as Fjord's first mate after the group parted ways, while also pursuing her role as an Expositor in the Cobalt Soul. However, she ultimately chose to remain with the Cobalt Soul in the Empire. In the course of their conversation about Jester, Fjord confided in Beau about his attraction to her. In response, Beau admitted to harboring feelings for Jester as well and offered her advice on how to approach her. Subsequently, Fjord inquired about Yasha, and Beau shared her own feelings regarding her.

After Fjord and Jester shared a kiss, he told Beau about their budding relationship during their shared night watch. Beau mentioned her upcoming date with Yasha. Later, while preparing a trap for Lucien, Fjord privately expressed to Beau that he didn't plan to run if the plan didn't work. They both affirmed their determination not to disappoint the group and to stand their ground and fight until the very end.

Caduceus Clay

Fjord and Caduceus are good friends. The two of them initially had little in common, but grew closer as they traveled. Fjord has come to rely on Caduceus's counsel when it comes to making responsible decisions and understanding others' motivations. Fjord and Caduceus have deep trust and respect for each other.

Caduceus has become something of a mentor to Fjord since the latter broke his pact with Uk'otoa, guiding him when he lost all his powers. Fjord even decided to make a pact with the Wildmother, inspired by Caduceus's bond with her. Caduceus considers Fjord to be something of an angsty teen. However, he is very proud of Fjord for not being lured by the power that Uk'otoa seems to promise. Caduceus thinks it is very admirable that Fjord did not lose his sense of self during the Mighty Nein's time at sea.

As the situation with Uk'otoa worsened, Fjord found himself opening up more to Caduceus. Following a particularly unsettling dream that woke him in the middle of the night while Caduceus kept watch, Fjord decided to confide in him. Sharing the details of the dream. After breaking his pact with Uk'otoa, Fjord tossed his sword into the searing lava of the forge, and seeking help, he woke Caduceus, expressing that he found inspiration in him.

After the intense battle beneath Rexxentrum, Caduceus surprised Fjord with a custom sea-themed symbol of the Wildmother, crafted in Kravaraad. Caduceus told Fjord that he loved him like family after Fjord joked about an eye appearing on his cheek in Eiselcross, which was met with an initially earnest response from Caduceus. Realizing that he was joking, Caduceus playfully threatened revenge, drawing on his experience with his siblings.

In the moment before parting ways, Caduceus, choosing to stay with his family in the Blooming Grove, received a hug from Fjord, who expressed gratitude, stating, "I wouldn't be here like this without you." In response, Caduceus stated that Fjord had earned everything he had.

The Wildmother

Fjord first interacted with the Wildmother in a dream he had underneath the Arbor Exemplar. He asked Caduceus soon after about how to see her again and feel the warmth devoid from his previous visions. Caduceus taught Fjord how to meditate and listen closely to the nature surrounding him. After some time, Fjord heard the familiar waves and felt a sense of comfort wash over him.

After seeking guidance from Jester and Caduceus, Fjord asked the Wildmother to take an interest in him. She agreed to give him back his magical capabilities, as long as he became her follower. Fjord accepted the offer, and soon after became a warlock/paladin of Melora. After the events of " Refjorged " (2x76), his warlock abilities were modified to fit the themes of the Wildmother, such as Eldritch Blast being a verdant green color and Hexblade's Curse manifesting as dark and shadowy vines.

While meditating aboard the Midnight Hammer on the way to Eiselcross and asking for calm seas, Fjord started seeing visions of distant islands, calm shores, and abyssal depths. The Wildmother then asked Fjord if this is what he wanted to seek out, to become like the waves and explore the unknown. After resoundingly saying yes, she bestowed upon him a sacred oath.

Jester Lavorre

Jester have been close friends since the start of the campaign and are now romantically involved. They first crossed paths in Port Damali when Fjord observed Jester employing her magic to play pranks on the locals, a few weeks before encountering the rest of the Mighty Nein. They often reach out to the other to ask how they are doing, and have supported each other through their personal journeys.

Jester expressed concern about Fjord's tusk filing and offered her support for whatever choice he decided to make. Fjord told Jester that he would stop filing his tusks if she wanted him to. From that point onward, Fjord stopped filing his tusks and allowed them to grow. She was the only person in the group who knew about Fjord's original accent and his imitation of Vandran's accent, and she kept this information a secret from the rest of the Nein.

Jester had a crush on Fjord from the start, though at first, it seemed mostly superficial. She initially viewed him through an idealized lens, but as they traveled together, she came to see him for who he truly was, not the romanticized figure she had imagined, but still someone incredible. Fjord, for his part, liked Jester but spent a long time pretending not to notice her flirting. However, after the events with Avantika on Darktow, he had a conversation with Jester and realized how much the situation had hurt her. In that moment, he understood that he might have been overlooking someone truly special. It was then that Fjord fully recognized his feelings for her and started to show them more.

On Rumblecusp, Fjord shared his worries about the Traveler with Jester, revealing a genuine concern for her safety. Fjord admitted to Beau that he wanted Jester to be happy. He felt strongly for her, but understood that her early feelings for him might have been whimsy. He wanted to explore the world, see lands he hadn't seen, and find the things that people were scared of and solve them. He hoped she was a part of that. When Jester clung to the Traveler as he was taken away in chains, Fjord employed Hex and Relentless Hex to grasp onto her, encouraging her to let Artagan go. Despite Artagan eventually forcing them both off, Jester expressed gratitude to Fjord, telling him that she didn't know what she would have done without him.

One night while residing within Widogast's Nascent Nein Sided Tower, Fjord visited Jester at her room. After discussing their plans, Fjord asked if he could kiss her, and when she nodded, he did, further remarking that he had wished to do it earlier, he had simply been too afraid. The two became a couple and have kissed several times.

When Jester contacted Vandran on Fjord's behalf, despite Fjord's request for her not to do so, she admitted her actions the next morning. Although surprised to learn that Jester had scried on Vandran, Fjord interpreted her choice to reach out as a reminder that he had people in his life willing to assist him, strengthening his feelings for her. After the defeat of Lucien, Jester confessed her love to a half-asleep Fjord, not allowing him to respond. Later, Fjord reciprocated, expressing his love for her while extinguishing the flames following Trent's attack. Following the conclusion of their adventure with the Nein, while alone with her watching stars on top of a water tower, Fjord asked her to accompany him out on the sea, a proposal to which she gladly agreed. Furthermore, he floated the idea of getting a shared home in Nicodranas, and her response was enthusiastic, describing it as a wonderful idea.

Sometime after the Mighty Nein went their separate ways, Fjord and Jester bought a small property in Nicodranas below the water tower, giving them a place to stay and some privacy when they were not at sea. Whenever they are in Nicodranas, they climb the water tower to watch the stars together, just like they did on their last visit with the rest of the Mighty Nein. They painted their house and converted a large part of it into a studio for Jester. According to Fjord, it has too much color. However, they don't spend much time there, as most of their time is spent at sea with their new shipping company, Stone's Throw Shipping. Despite Jester's dislike for the name, she is very supportive of Fjord's endeavors. They spend their days at sea saving other ships and stopping pirate attacks. During their voyage, Fjord appointed Jester as his first mate. Jester, trying to make Fjord more confident in front of his crew, warned him that she noticed Kingsley eyeing him and suspected he might attempt a mutiny. When Jester was knocked unconscious by Uk'otoa's minions, Fjord, without hesitation, pulled out the last Cloven Crystal and handed it over to protect her, apologizing as he did so.

Later, when Fjord agreed to a pact with Zehir, the Cloaked Serpent, Jester was worried about him. Seeing Zehir's mark on Fjord's chest, she remained troubled despite his reassurances that everything would be alright, fearing he might now be bound to a Betrayer God.

After defeating Trent Ikithon's demon form in Blumenthal, the pair became engaged.

Caleb Widogast

Fjord was initially intrigued by Caleb's wizardry, as he was interested in learning more magic himself. Fjord is allergic to Caleb's (sometimes) cat familiar, Frumpkin.

When the group first set off on the road together the two spoke about whether or not things would work out. Fjord seemed positive and Caleb responded that they would make it work. This became something of a mantra between the two. Caleb thought of Fjord as his closest friend outside of Nott early on in the campaign and considered him to be a great leader.

During " Midnight Espionage " (2x12), they got into an argument over Caleb stealing a spell scroll and potentially exposing the operation. Caleb walked away without the scroll when Fjord held his falchion to Caleb's throat and prepared to cast Eldritch Blast at Nott.

After they helped to rescue Fjord, Jester and Yasha from the Iron Shepherds, Fjord confided to Caleb and Beauregard that he felt responsible for their capture. They both assured him it was not his fault, and Caleb advised him that he should not blame himself for being taken advantage of.

Caleb being part of their rescue party seemed to alleviate some of Fjord's concerns regarding Caleb's dedication to the group. As time went on he came to trust and rely on him, even taking him to one side in " A Pirate's Life for Me " (2x41) and asking him to "exercise quick judgement" and protect the group against Avantika should things go badly. Caleb would later go on to do exactly this, casting Wall of Fire between Avantika and the Nein to give them a chance to get her diary to the Plank King and expose her.

In Dashilla's lair during " The Diver's Grave " (2x44), Fjord pushed to explore what would happen should they drop some blood onto a runic altar, appealing to Caleb's sense of curiosity. After assuring Caleb a favor in return, Caleb cut his palm. The blood was not enough to complete the ritual and Fjord cut his own palm. When this was still not enough they decided not to complete the ritual, and clasped hands to solidify their agreement to continue to help each other in the future.

In " In Love and War " (2x57), Caleb told Fjord that he appreciated him, and referenced their prior discussion on taking risks. He seemed to want to say more but a misunderstanding on Fjord's part ended the discussion early.

Caleb was the first in the party to confront Fjord about his multiple accents, citing concern that there might be something dangerous in his past. Fjord did not want to explain himself, though he did assure Caleb that the group was in no danger, and replied that his current accent was related to being a version of himself that he liked. When Caleb offered to share secrets of his own in return for learning more, Fjord told Caleb if he had his way he would not tell any of the Mighty Nein anything about his past. He asked for Caleb to give him more time until he decided to share his past on his own terms and Caleb agreed.

After throwing his pact blade into the lava in the Kiln and losing his powers, Fjord told the group that he was now powerless, seemingly nervous that they might no longer accept him as he might prove a liability. Caleb reminded him of his many other talents and was the first to offer him an item to help him in his magic-less state, putting the Glove of Blasting on his hand and prompting Jester to hand over the Whip.

In " Dark Waters " (2x98), Caleb finally shared his past with Fjord, explaining that Trent Ikithon made him kill his parents, Una and Leofric. Fjord apologized for almost killing Caleb in the High Richter's house, stating it was his way of controlling the situation. He promised to help Caleb in rooting out the corrupt individuals of the Cerberus Assembly.

After the eyes of the Somnovem appeared on him, Caleb decided it was time to cash in the favor they'd agreed upon at the Diver's Grave. He turned to Fjord, saying that if he were to lose control, Fjord would take him down and protect the others. Fjord affirmed his commitment to keep his promise and expressed confidence that such a dire situation wouldn't arise.

Nott/Veth

Nott hoped to steal Fjord's letter of recommendation to the Soltryce Academy for Caleb to use instead. Fjord set a trap after Nott's initial theft attempt, learning of this and Nott's motivated attachment to Caleb when Molly charmed Nott. Afterwards, Nott treated Fjord with hostility.

When Nott was reluctant to accompany the group into the ocean, Fjord teased her with stories about Captain Buttonbeard. Although meant as a friendly jest, he did not realize this was a sensitive topic for Nott, who appeared to be annoyed by it. After learning about Nott's life as Veth and her death by drowning, he apologized for his insensitivity (being particularly understanding, having drowned himself). During their travels to Xhorhas their relationship has developed into one of more reciprocal teasing and banter.

Travis has stated on Talks Machina that he likes to mess with Sam, which has informed the way Fjord interacts with Nott, while Sam has commented that Nott feels she and Fjord are very similar people and is sometimes annoyed by that.

Luc Brenatto

Unlike the dynamic between Fjord and Veth, who often enjoy teasing each other, Luc holds admiration for Fjord. Like the other members of the Mighty Nein, Fjord is an honorary uncle to Luc. During a moment when Luc made his plea to remain with the group for their mission to stop Trent, Fjord expressed support, telling Luc he was rooting for him. Luc saw Fjord as not just cool, but also as a remarkable man capable of achieving great things. In his plea, Luc drew parallels between Fjord and his captain, who inspired him, emphasizing the need for similar guidance in his own journey.

Yasha Nydoorin

Fjord and Yasha have been reliable allies, though not close friends. In Rosohna, Fjord loaned Yasha 500 gold to commission a set of enchanted bracers, which she promised to pay back.

After Yasha fell under Obann's domination, Fjord tried and failed to get her out of the King's Cage. She brought him to zero hit points but he used his half-orc Relentless Endurance to bring himself back to consciousness and said, "Why?" Yasha looked at him intently and said, almost disembodied, "I heard you." Fjord was certain after seeing Yasha turn that she had betrayed the Nein, and had been tricking them all along. When fighting Yasha in the Chantry of the Dawn, he cast Enervation on her, draining her health to heal himself. He continued to pull from it even after she was freed from Obann's control, saying he would "cash in on that guilt and regret" as she knelt on the ground before him.

Later, Yasha paid Fjord back the 500 gold she owed him. He said it was not necessary, but she insisted. He took the money saying it made him uncomfortable, so as a thank you, he gave Yasha the Manual of Gainful Exercise that Caleb had given him.

Sabian

Fjord and Sabian were both hired by Vandran as crew of the Tide's Breath. Fjord said he had known Sabian for many years, and they grew up together in the orphanage, where Fjord suffered a lot due to Sabian's bullying; he stated Sabian has "always been a piece of shit of one variety or another". In recent years before the Tide's Breath explosion, Fjord believed "that stuff had faded between us", since Sabian mainly ignored him in public, although the half-elf never stopped disliking him.

Mollymauk Tealeaf

Molly and Fjord had a friendly relationship, often being roommates at inns. Fjord wanted to learn about Molly's ritual with his swords and asked to join in. He hoped that Molly might have knowledge about magical swords that could be helpful to him as he searched for the meaning of his falchion. Before Molly's amnesia was revealed, Fjord realized Molly was lying about where his swords and his powers came from. For unknown reasons, he decided not to confront Molly or tell anyone else.

The two frequently collaborated in Zadash, particularly in causing a distraction at The Guided Hand Infirmary, and in trapping Nott when she attempted to go through Fjord's things in their shared room at the inn.

Before leaving the town of Berleben, Fjord confided in Molly about his concerns about the new eye in the center of his falchion. Molly attempted to charm him in response to get more information, but it failed.

After being rescued from the Iron Shepherds and learning that Molly had died, Fjord was saddened. He felt like the death was partially his fault for not being able to fight back when the Iron Shepherds kidnapped him. He made Molly's sword, Summer's Dance, his pact weapon to honor Molly's memory.

Kingsley Tealeaf

When the Mighty Nein returned to Nicodranas, Kingsley discovered that Fjord was the captain of a ship. Eager to pursue his dream of becoming a pirate and to learn from Fjord, Kingsley sought permission to join his crew. Fjord accepted, expressing his delight at having Kingsley aboard. Over six months aboard the Nein Heroez, Fjord acknowledged Kingsley's tremendous help on the ship, even though he was still learning the ropes. Kingsley enjoyed occasionally undermining Fjord's authority, seeking to demonstrate his own leadership among the crew.

Kingsley revealed to Jester that Fjord had shared some basics about his past encounters with Uk'otoa. Fjord disapproved when Kingsley eagerly considered accepting Zehir's pact. Following Fjord's decision to accept the pact himself, telling the others that it was his responsibility, he approached Kingsley to understand his eagerness, emphasizing that his choices between light and darkness matter, since he got a fresh start in his life. Despite this, Fjord entrusted Kingsley with the Fang of the Spire King, a sword received from Zehir, to which Kingsley responded, "Every now and then I like you."

That night, in a conversation with Beau about Molly and Lucien, Kingsley said that Fjord doesn't mention Molly that much and only occasionally talks about the conflict with Lucien in front of him. Beau observed traits of both Fjord and Jester in Kingsley and mentioned that she sees how they influenced him. Kingsley acknowledged that he respects them, even if he doesn't show it, since Fjord and Jester had taught him everything he knows.

After their victory over Uk'otoa, Kingsley continued to serve under Fjord aboard the Nein Heroez for many years, learning everything he could from him. However, following Fjord's decision to entrust him with his own ship, Kingsley departed for Darktow Isle a month later. In his farewell note to Fjord, Kingsley expressed gratitude for everything he had done for him and for everything he had taught him.

Uk'otoa

Fjord's Hexblade patron is a mysterious entity. After Fjord defeated a nergaliid and left Trostenwald, the patron came to him in a dream. While falling asleep, the air seemed to transform into a cold, dark ocean. Struggling against the currents, Fjord gasped the cold water into his lungs, and eventually he was able to breathe it. A giant yellow eye appeared, and an entity communicated eight words directly into Fjord's mind: watching, potential, learn, grow, provoke, consume, reward, patience. Upon waking, Fjord coughed out the salty water from his dream. He then gained the ability to summon and dismiss his falchion as a pact weapon.

When Fjord made another weapon into his pact weapon, his falchion eventually absorbed the other weapon's properties. This is apparently what Fjord's patron meant by "consume."

After meeting Captain Avantika, Fjord discovered she was another follower of his patron and learned its identity: a mighty leviathan known as " Uk'otoa ".

Fjord claims he does not want to release Uk'otoa nor does he want the kind of power Uk'otoa seems to offer his "chosen". He believes control over the seas is too much power for one person to have. He told the Mighty Nein he did not know who he would be if he had power like that. Fjord seems to be afraid of Uk'otoa and hopeful that the Wildmother may be able to keep the leviathan at bay.

Fjord's relationship with Uk'otoa took a turn for the worse when the group journeyed to Xhorhas without releasing the leviathan. After introducing the word "punish" to the dreams, Uk'otoa appeared to somehow limit Fjord's warlock powers following another punishment dream. This limitation seemed to pass by the morning.

In " Clay and Dust " (2x72), Uk'otoa (again displeased with Fjord's procrastination) further tormented and punished the half-orc, taking his powers a second time. However, Fjord resisted and attempted to take command of his pact by placing his Sword of Fathoms slowly deeper and deeper into his own chest, claiming that Uk'otoa needs Fjord more than Fjord needs him. However, all of his attempts were fruitless, and he cast his blade into the lava forge of the Kiln, severing his connection to Uk'otoa.

In " Dark Waters " (2x98), Fjord had a dream in which he tried to summon the Star Razor, but ended up summoning the Sword of Fathoms instead. Fjord and the rest of the Nein then found themselves facing off against multiple agents of Uk'otoa. Later, it was revealed that the agents were sent to retrieve the Cloven Crystal and Fjord in order to break the final seal. In " The Chase Begins " (2x112), the Mighty Nein once again encountered a deep scion, chuuls, and the undead form of Avantika. However, their attempt to retrieve the Cloven Crystal was again unsuccessful and Avantika was killed.

When Lucien asked about Fjord's goal to break free from the sea serpent, he answered by expressing his enjoyment in Uk'otoa's pursuit. He added that his relentless pursuit provides him with a good picture of the leviathan's position. Fjord desires to confront and defeat Uk'otoa on his terms, with the ultimate goal of bringing this chapter of his journey to a close. He is confident that with a few more steps, he will be able to do so.

Once Uk'otoa had been released, Fjord agreed to a pact with Zehir, the Cloaked Serpent, in order to imprison the False Serpent. Fjord was able to track down Uk'otoa by bearing the mark of vengeance from Zehir and utilizing the lingering connection to his former pact master. During the encounter, Uk'otoa was perplexed about why he couldn't strip Fjord of his powers. Uk'otoa exploited their link to take control of Fjord and attack Jester. After they defeated Uk'otoa, Fjord pursued him into the deepest parts of the ocean with the help of Caleb in the shape of a dragon turtle. He was successful in resealing Uk'otoa while also beginning a new cycle by creating three new Cloven Crystals.

Fjord's Dreams/Visions

Fjord has had dreams in "The Open Road", "A Favor In Kind", " Dangerous Liaisons " (2x37), " A Pirate's Life for Me " (2x41), " Cornered " (2x53), " Agreements " (2x61), " Chases and Trees " (2x65), " Clay and Dust " (2x72), and " Dark Waters " (2x98). Sometimes he has denied having an unusual dream or lied about the contents of the dreams. Some of the dreams have given him physical side effects, such as coughing up salt water, blood in his mouth, nose bleeds, and losing his magical abilities.

Fjord has had visions or heard Uk'otoa's voice while awake when in proximity to a Cloven Crystal in " Stalker in the Swamp " (2x21), "Lost Treasures", "The Diver's Grave" and " The Second Seal " (2x47). When near the sea for the first time after over a month in Xhorhas, Fjord heard Uk'otoa's voice in his head say "return" as he stepped into the Teleportation Circle to return to Xhorhas.

Recently, Fjord has received visions from the Wildmother in " Chases and Trees " (2x65), " Refjorged " (2x76), and in " The Chase Begins " (2x112). Unlike his previous dreams where he was surrounded in freezing waters, these visions were warm and inviting. He felt more at peace, instead of being anxious and scared.

Avantika

The relationship between Fjord and Avantika was complicated. Their patron Uk'otoa brought them together, but Avantika tried to maintain constant control over Fjord and the Mighty Nein. She conscripted them into the crew of the Squalleater, eventually forcing Fjord to become her quartermaster.

During the weeks that they knew each other, neither of them wholly trusted the other. However, their mutual desire to hide their true intentions led them to pursue a physical relationship. During this time, Fjord told Avantika he shared her goal of releasing Uk'otoa; but told the Mighty Nein he was just using her for information.

Avantika openly yearned for the power Uk'otoa might grant her when released, while Fjord denied any desire to release Uk'otoa outside of her presence. When Fjord shared new dreams from Uk'otoa, Avantika became jealous due to her belief that Uk'otoa favored Fjord over herself. This fueled the race to claim Uk'otoa's boon in " Dubious Pursuits " (2x40), which she won.

Fjord did not trust Avantika or her long-term plans, even conceding that she probably wanted to kill him. The degree of her fervor for Uk'otoa led the Nein to plot her downfall, culminating in the theft of her journal in " A Hole In the Plan " (2x42). Fjord slept with Avantika to ensure she did not interfere in the plan (though neither Jester nor Nott went through with disguising themselves as her). The following day Fjord was called with the rest of the Mighty Nein to Avantika's ship, where a battle ensued.

After the Plank King arrived with knowledge of her journal and plans, Avantika claimed Fjord had blown up the Tide's Breath, though Fjord had never informed her of Sabian's sabotage. She also claimed that Fjord seduced and manipulated her by using the memory of Vandran against her. Fjord did not seem bothered by her death at the hands of the Plank King.

After her execution, Fjord used her journal to pinpoint the location of the next temple of Uk'otoa, apparently in the jungles of the Menagerie Coast north of Nicodranas.

Avantika reappeared as an undead creature of some kind in " The Chase Begins " (2x112) on the deck of the Midnight Hammer after the ship was attacked by minions of Uk'otoa. Saying "Darling, we have business elsewhere," she attempted to grab Fjord. Fjord fought back but Avantika was able to retrieve the Cloven Crystal and Dimension Door away. She was pursued by the Mighty Nein. In the ensuing fight, Fjord landed the final blow, bisecting Avantika and recovering the Crystal. Her remains were then devoured by a group of orcas.

Vandran

Vandran was captain of the Tide's Breath at the time it was sabotaged and sank. Fjord has described him as a mentor and father figure, and seemed surprised to learn of his previous connections to Avantika, The Revelry, and Uk'otoa. Seeing that someone had looted Vandran's quarters after the Tide's Breath wrecked seemed to make Fjord angry. Fjord claimed to the Mighty Nein that one of the reasons he appeared to ally with Avantika was to find out what had happened to Vandran.

When the party reached Kravaraad on the quest to reforge Dwueth'var, Fjord cast Minor Illusion to conjure an image of Vandran's face to help Jester contact him via Sending. From this, Fjord learned that Vandran was "retired on an island with good folks", but this only seemed to confirm his own fears that Vandran was not looking for him. Later, Fjord dropped the accent he had used since the rest of the party met him, and adopted thereafter his own, native accent. He explained that Vandran had been a man of great renown and respect, and Fjord had wanted to emulate him, "to be him."

After defeating Lucien and Trent, Fjord, Jester, and Kingsley sailed off to Bisaft Isle to seek out Vandran using the information gathered from Jester's Scry. He eventually found the small driftwood house that Vandran was living out off and convinced him to come aboard the Nein Heroez, so that they could reconnect with each other once more.

Quests

Fjord was on his way to the Soltryce Academy in the hopes of learning more magic there and more specifically about his powers.

  • In " The Journey Home " (2x30), after being rescued from Lorenzo, Fjord stated that he does not want to go to the Academy anymore.

Fjord wants to find his former crew mate Sabian, who sabotaged the Tide's Breath and caused it to sink. He wants to get answers about why Sabian caused the shipwreck. Depending on the answers he gets, Fjord may want revenge as well.

Ever since his vision of his former captain and mentor Vandran absorbing a Cloven Crystal, Fjord has wanted to find Vandran again. He wants to know if Vandran survived the Tide's Breath shipwreck. He was disappointed not to see another vision of Vandran after putting the second Cloven Crystal in place to release Uk'otoa.

  • Caduceus Clay confirmed through Divination that Vandran is still alive in " The Second Seal " (2x47). He told Fjord in " Homeward Bound " (2x48).
  • In " Clay and Dust " (2x72) Fjord showed Jester an image of Vandran by casting Minor Illusion. Jester cast Sending to tell Vandran Fjord was alive and looking for him. Vandran responded that he was glad to hear Fjord was ok and that he himself was retired on an island. After hearing this, Fjord wondered if he should continue searching for Vandran. If Vandran truly is at peace, Fjord does not want to disrupt that.
  • Fjord chose not to send a message to Vandran before the party's perilous journey to Aeor. He held his desire to speak to Vandran as "more reason to come home" and felt confident that he would live to see Vandran afterward. He also reiterated that, should he not be able to see him, he did not wish to disrupt Vandran's peace. Regardless, in " Into the Eye " (2x131), Jester secretly used Scrying and Sending to contact Vandran and collect a message for Fjord. This spurred Fjord's interest in contacting Vandran more immediately, and he instructed Jester to ask Vandran where he was staying. Vandran told Jester that he was on one of the small islands near Bisaft Isle.
  • He eventually saw Vandran again in " Fond Farewells " (2x141), and Vandran explained his own past with the Cloven Crystal. Vandran joined Fjord's crew aboard the Nein Heroez for at least short trips so they could catch up further.

Fjord has not said what his intentions are as far as the final seal of his former patron Uk'otoa.

  • He raced Avantika to place a Cloven Crystal breaking the first seal on Urukayxl, but she was able to put her crystal in place first.
  • Fjord chose to travel to the Gravid Archipelago to place the crystal breaking the second seal of Uk'otoa. After that, however, he showed no interest in pursuing the breaking the third seal, saying to Caleb that he did not mean to pursue it any further, and if he could, would like to find a way out of it.
  • When Fjord broke his pact with Uk'otoa by throwing the Sword of Fathoms into the lava at Kravaraad, he believed that the third cloven crystal had been destroyed with it. However, he later discovered it was within him until removed by a Greater Restoration. Caleb took it and put it in his Vault of Amber where they believed it would be safe from detection by Uk'otoa or anyone else. When the rest of the Nein suggested trying to destroy it, possibly in the lava on Rumblecusp, Fjord was non-committal.
  • During the events of " The Chase Begins " (2x112) and " A Heart Grown Cold " (2x113), the Cloven Crystal was released from the Vault of Amber by using Dispel Magic and was briefly in Avantika's possession. The Mighty Nein retrieved the crystal after defeating Avantika. It then kept inside Fjord's Bag of Holding for safekeeping.
  • When the Bag of Holding was stolen by the Lucien in " Fair-weather Faith " (2x123), Fjord lost possession of the Cloven Crystal and repeatedly worried for it. Lucien was aware that he now had possession of it. After Lucien's death in " Long May He Reign " (2x140), Fjord regained possession of the Bag of Holding after Lucien's death and was visibly relieved to confirm the Cloven Crystal was inside.
  • Fjord seems generally unsure of his exact plans for the Cloven Crystal afterward. For a while, he carries it with him in his travels aboard the Nein Heroez. He is considering giving it to the Cobalt Soul for safekeeping after he and Jester thoroughly investigate the location of the third temple. Upon being reminded that the Nein Heroez is repeatedly attacked at sea by agents of Uk'otoa in search of the Crystal, he indicates accelerating plans. But, overall, he seemed unsure about that plan of action.

Warlock abilities

Due to Fjord's decision to throw his pact weapon into the lava during " Clay and Dust " (2x72), thus severing his connection to Uk'otoa, Fjord temporarily lost access to his warlock powers. Under his new pact with the Wildmother, established in " Refjorged " (2x76), he regained access to them.

  • Eldritch Invocations (6+)
    • Agonizing Blast
    • Dank Water Powers/ Control Water (Boon from Uk'otoa)
    • Gift of the Depths
    • Mask of Many Faces
    • Relentless Hex
    • Thirsting Blade
    • Sculptor of Flesh
  • Otherworldly Patron (Hexblade)
    • Accursed Specter
    • Armor of Hexes
    • Expanded Spell List
    • Hexblade's Curse
      • When Fjord first invoked the Hexblade's Curse against a target, the blade of his falchion transformed from polished metal to being covered in barnacles which grow down towards the hilt. Additionally, the blade began to sourcelessly drip water as if it had just been pulled out of the ocean. Since Fjord made the falchion his pact weapon (a pact feature he chose and acquired at level 3), these changes appear to have become permanent.
      • Possibly due to the iceflex used in reforging his new pact weapon Dwueth'var, the sword now creates frost on the ground.
    • Hex Warrior
    • Master of Hexes
  • Pact Boon: Pact of the Blade
    • Rather than creating a new weapon or performing a ritual on an existing weapon, Fjord's mysterious falchion disappeared during a dream in which he met his patron. Upon waking, he was able to summon the falchion as a pact weapon. It absorbed weapons he performed rituals on. Matt has mentioned that a weapon absorbed by the falchion changes its damage die to that of a falchion, a reskinned longsword.
    • After throwing his falchion into the lava pit in Kravaraad, his new pact weapon has been Star Razor (Dwueth'var) instead of the Sword of Fathoms.
    • When it reached its full potential in its exalted state, Dwueth'var became a +1 longsword (+3 when glowing), with the ability to cast three spells, each once per day. A bonus action can be used to light the sword up using the command word "galas'var", producing a glow like blue torchlight in a 40-foot radius. Any creature that hits the wielder while the sword is glowing takes 1d12 radiant damage. When hit with a melee attack, the holder can use their reaction to teleport half their movement speed in any direction they choose. The sword's charges can be expended to cast the following spells once per day each:
      • Fly
      • See Invisibility
      • Faerie Fire
  • Pact Magic (Charisma-based spellcasting)
  • Mystic Arcanum:
    • Arcane Gate; as an 11th level warlock, he gained access to a single 6th level spell from the warlock spell list, which he can cast once per long rest, without expending a spell slot (pact magic or regular)
    • Crown of Stars; as a 13th level warlock, he gained access to a single 7th level spell from the warlock spell list, which he can cast once per long rest, without expending a spell slot (pact magic or regular)

Warlock spells

As a 14th-level warlock, Fjord knows four cantrips and twelve spells. He only has three 5th-level spell slots for those twelve spells, but he regains his spell slots on a short rest. He can replace the spells he knows when he gains a level, so he no longer knows all of these spells. He also has one 6th level and one 7th level spell slot that he can use as a Warlock as part of the Mystic Arcanum feature. Moreover, even after gaining paladin levels, he seems to be able to still swap and use new warlock spells.

Oath spells

Fjord always has access to these spells as an Oath of the Open Sea paladin.

Paladin spells

As a 6th level paladin Fjord has access to 1st- and 2nd-level paladin spells with four 1st-level and two 2nd-level spell slots, he can prepare up to 7 of these spells per day.

From the Eyes of Nine

During the Nein's fight with a mutated Cree, Fjord was exposed to the "Pattern" of the Somnovem. Over time, he ended up with unnatural boons bestowed by the red eyes. These abilities disappeared with the eyes after Lucien's final defeat.

  • First eye: Mild telepathy with others bearing eyes (120 feet) - unused

Quotations

  • "We need to drop this fucker and get the hell out of Dodge." (Fjord after attacking the zombie in the second battle)
  • "Is that single horse a, uh...a mustang?" (how Fjord met Shelby the Mustang)
  • "We are either a team, or you are working for yourselves. Decide." (said to Caleb and Nott after Caleb is caught stealing from the High Richter's home)
  • "They call me eagle eye Fjord where I come from. [cawing] Crow Fjord, maybe raven, you don't know." (Fjord claiming to the party that he has keen vision)
  • "I would say something about that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, but I feel pretty fucking weak right now." (Fjord to the Mighty Nein after the group fought a dragon)
  • Fjord: I betcha, crackfire, slopdolly.
    Nott: What?!
  • Travis (describing Fjord leaving Avantika's quarters): "I turn around and I head towards the door and as I get there, I look back." (pauses) "And I walk away!"
    • (Callback to Vax'ildan frequently walking away from emotional moments in Campaign One.)
  • "Magic's new to me; this sword is new to me. I didn't have most of this all of my life. All I had was my words to get out of situations, to try and heal conflict, to try and outsmart somebody. And now all of a sudden, I have this power; and I feel like it's a shortcut and I've been cheating myself. I don't feel like I've put forth the same effort to resolve something because I can just will something into happening. That doesn't seem right to me."
  • Beau: "I can understand taking the easy way out with the power you have. It's what I've done my whole life. I just don't know anything else though."
Fjord: "I get that. Maybe we try not to do that. I check you-"
Beau and Fjord together: "-you check me."
    Fjord: "We check the group."
  • Fjord: (to the blue dragon in Halas's manor) "I have recently been putting my hands where they don't belong. And this time, it sent me to you."
Blue Dragon: "And what have we learned?"
Fjord: "Probably to look and not touch."
  • Fjord: (to their neighbor, Lord Biylan) "I think that's how trees work."
  • Fjord: "Fuckin' seaweed wraps are the shit!"
  • Fjord: (to Obann) "It's time to vrock!"
  • Fjord: " Wildmother, shine your light!" (said while fighting Obann in the Chantry of the Dawn)
  • Fjord: "That's very cool. I do love the ocean." (said while meditating in Rexxentrum)
  • Fjord: "You need me more than I need you. Give it back." (Fjord trying to intimidate Uk'otoa)
  • Fjord: (to Caduceus and Caleb) "I think I'm becoming comfortable with the idea of failing with you. Makes it a little less lonely."
  • Fjord: "Listen you fucking jungle! I'm a paladin of the Wildmother. You're going to move or we're going to bust you wide open! We'll wreck this place. Don't make me fucking tell you twice!" (Fjord unsuccessfully trying to intimidate a jungle)
  • Caduceus: "Do you feel that nature is honest, or do you feel that nature can lie?"
Fjord: "I think it can certainly be deceiving—natural camouflage, colors, poisons, deterrents, and all sorts of things. But it's also unyielding; it doesn't change for anyone."
Caduceus: "I never really thought of it that way."
  • Fjord: "And you care about people you know, about people you don't know. You cause chaos but in the end, you don't want to hurt people." (Fjord to Jester)
  • Fjord: "I have to be honest. Also, I don't really care about two hundred other people. I do care about you." (Fjord to Jester)
  • Fjord: (to Jester) "One last thing."
    Jester: "Yeah?"
Fjord: "You can tell us if something happens when you speak with the Traveler. Last time, it seemed like you carried it for a long time. You can...you can tell me. I'll listen."
  • Fjord: (to Beauregard) "You know when someone makes you feel a way that you don't think you have any right to feel or you never thought that you might?"
    Beau: "Yeah"
Fjord: "And that seems off because I should know who I am. I should know how I feel or what I want, but there's a gravity around Jester, at least to me. And she's the one I've known the longest in this new part of my life. And I really thought that when this started, there would be an end for me in this and I would get even, or retribution or payback and then I would be....done. And it hasn't been that way at all. It shriveled and died and in its place, seven new interests sprouted..."
  • Fjord: (to Jester) "Can I kiss you?"
  • Fjord: (to Lucien) "Are you sure you don't want to hang a tie on the door? We could order some fruit snacks and have a lot of fun! We could get freakay!"
  • Essek Thelyss: "I spent my entire life studying the intent to not let things like this happen to chance...That can't be it, can it."
Fjord: "I don't know. But if you were to ask my wise friend, Caduceus, I'm sure he would tell you that life continues on. It changes, it evolves, and it grows. I don't think there's an end. You just might not be able to see the next trip. But you have more time. You have more time to study. You have a talent that I don't understand. Use that anger, that frustration. Let it fuel you. If you have any regret or grief over what you've done in your life, I see nothing but good, and nothing but an opportunity for you to turn it around. You've shown me all I need to see."
  • Fjord: (to Uk'otoa) "These were never your oceans, pretender; they belong to her."
