Alalvinórë was the midmost region of Tol Eressëa, in which Kôrtirion was built along the banks of the River Gliding.

History

Alalvinórë was a wooded area of elm trees situated in the center of the island. Many towns and villages were here ringed around the city of Kôrtirion, the principal city in the center of the region. It was also the location of the Cottage of Lost Play, near Kôrtirion. It was known for being the fairest region of the island.

Tinfang, an Elvish piper, liked visiting Alalvinórë more than any other region of Tol Eressëa.

After the March of Liberation, Alalvinórë was the region in which Ingwion settled in along with the wisest among the returning Elves because they saw the region as being very fair. Ingwion built a great tower at the highest point of Kôrtirion.

Ingwion's granddaughter, Meril-i-Turinqi, lived in a korin of elms at the base of Ingwion's tower in Alalvinórë.

Etymology

Alalvinórë is a Quenya name meaning "Land of Many Elms", comprised of the words alalvëa ("having many elms") and nórë ("land, country; people, race, tribe").

In other versions

In earlier versions of the legendarium, Alalvinórë was referred to by the name Alalminórë, an early Quenya word meaning "Land of (Many) Elms", being comprised of the words alalmë ("elm (tree)") and nórë ("(native) land, nation, family, country").

It also had two Gnomish cognates, Gar Lossion ("Place of Flowers") and Dor Lalmin.
