Overview
Gaspar was a wealthy mage with an intense interest in magical items. Fifteen years ago, while trying to acquire a particularly powerful artifact, Gaspar was struck with a powerful magical curse and was inflicted with never-ending hunger. Despite his best efforts, and that of his magical allies, no one was able to remove the curse. In desperation, the unfortunate mage started his company, Gaspar Reclamations, in the hopes of finding an item that could aid him in his quest to remove the curse. He also offered half his wealth to any person who could cure him of the affliction, and while there was no lack of applicants, the reward had yet to be collected.
Description
Gaspar was an immensely fat mage, weighing well over 400 pounds (181 kilograms). He was unable to walk without assistance and had been gaining weight at the rate of 30 pounds (13.6 kilograms) per year. His body was struggling to cope with the strain, and his health had begun to deteriorate.
Personality
Over time, Gaspar had all but given up hope, as his initial good humor had turned to despair. This was truly unfortunate, as Gaspar was a good and kind man who had shared the wealth his business has brought with his many employees.
Possessions
Gaspar maintained his home somewhere in the Tears of Selûne in Realmspace, while his company's main offices were located on the Rock of Bral, at the intersection of Grand Street and the Great Market. The offices were relatively small, with a staff of a dozen or so employees, and stocked a variety of magical items and other rare and unusual treasures.
Activities
Gaspar bought and sold minor magical items and also offered his services as a sage with regard to magic and magical items.
Relationships
Allies
Gaspar had a close working relationship with various schools of magic, notably the school of Alteration (of which he was a member), and the school of Enchantment, members of which had worked with him to find a cure for his curse. He had also worked closely with the Seekers in the hope that their huge repository of knowledge would contain the answer to his problem. As with the Smiths' Coster, the Celestians considered serving on one of Gaspar's ships as a prime opportunity to visit new and interesting spheres. Gaspar himself had gone out of his way to make the Celestians welcome, though he did draw the line when his profits were threatened.
Lieutenants
Nolan DeVries was Gaspar's chief lieutenant and Senior Agent who managed Gaspar Reclamations' main offices on the Rock of Bral. He also often accompanied Gaspar on his journeys.
Rivals
Gaspar distrusted the Tenth Pit but didn't believe he or his organization were in a position to oppose them. He also had a friendly rivalry with the Sindiath Line, as they both carried passengers (the trade in magical items was only marginally profitable, meaning that the company's operating costs had to be covered in some other way}. The Shapers, an organization made up of invokers, resented Gaspar's close relationship with the schools of Alteration and Enchantment, and as a result shunned his ships. In addition, mages in his employ often faced greater scrutiny in Shaper-controlled ports.
Gaspar was also in direct competition with the archmage Gamalon Idogyr, who had established his own business shortly before Gaspar had arrived on Bral. As a result, Gamalon had a somewhat poor opinion of Gaspar, and would often undercut his best prices on similar magic items.
