Gauntlet
Description The Gauntlet is a standard scorpionship except that all of the heavy weapons have been enchanted to improve their accuracy.
Description
The Gauntlet is a standard scorpionship except that all of the heavy weapons have been enchanted to improve their accuracy. The catapult in the scorpion's tail has been mounted on a turret, allowing it to fire in a 360° arc, while the second catapult has been mounted on a turret that only taverses 270°, ensuring that the deck mounted weapon cannot inadvertently damage the ship's tail.
Crew
The paladin Kyriel Alathar Pellinore serves as the captain of the Gauntlet, and is aided by senior members of the company, including the mages Cambrigha, Savion with the Eleven Fingers, and Vom of the Protectorate, who all serve as helmsmen. The rest of the crew includes the priests Liasa, Sunea and Kierie, as well as the apprentices Alekra, Ansalok, Chare, Nogard, Sarden the Courser, Sharondel and Vicales, who are responsible for operating the ship's rigging, heavy weapons as well as general maintenance.
Tactics
"The neogi may be one of the most feared races in wildspace, but I found a way to beat 'em by using their bases against them. My favorite tactic is to dive the ship toward their asteroid base with weapons firing. Not surprisingly, the stupid neogi follow me, like a ballista is going to destroy a moonlet! As they approach, I get closer to the asteroid, and pull up at the last moment before I splatter my ship and crew against the side of a cliff. Since the neogi ship's are not as maneuverable as mine, they always hit the cliff with a glorious thud. Gets them every time!"
- Kyriel Alathar Pellinore, Third Lord of Everlund and proud servant of Tyr
History
Kyriel Pellinore purchased the Gauntlet seven years ago from the Arcane on Toril after resigning from the Council of Elders of the city-state of Everlund when it became apparent they were powerless to help him rescue his family and two hundred other people who had been abducted by spacefaring illithid slavers. He subsequently founded The Gauntlet adventuring company with like-minded individuals he met on his quest.
They gained notoriety throughout Realmspace when they destroyed a large neogi slaving operation based on an asteroid in the Tears of Selûne. The neogi were dealing in umber hulk slaves, as well as humanoid slaves supplied by their illithid partners. Attacking from above in their modified scorpionship, the company destroyed all the surface buildings and killed nearly all of the neogi and illithid present. The surviving neogi and mind flayers managed to escape, and reported what had happened to their colleagues and their respective superiors. As a result, a bounty of over 100,000 gp was offered to whoever destroyed the Gauntlet.
