Overview

Milil is the god of poetry, eloquence, and song. He is a god of creativity and inspiration, of the entire song more than just the lyrics or the music. He represents the finished thought, the result of the process that takes an idea from conception to realization. He is the ideal to which all performers aspire: poised and confident, winningly charismatic, and a source of inspiration for those who listen to him. He is said to have total recall of anything he hears or that is spoken while music plays, as well as utmost skill at improvisation. However, he is also self-centered and egotistical, and likes to be the center of everything. When he isn't the center of attention, he bores easily, and his mind wanders or he leaves. He is also prone to flirting with mortals and deities for his own amusement, much to the annoyance of more serious minded deities.

Description

Milil often appears as a young, charismatic male human or elf with handsome features and a voice of unearthly beauty. He typically appears clean-shaven, with long brown or blond hair. He dresses in the traditional garb of a troubadour, and favors brightly coloured clothing, elegantly patterned cloth, and gold and bejeweled decorations and jewellery.

Holy symbol

Milil's symbol is a five-stringed harp made of silver leaves.

Favored weapon

Milil wields a rapier known as Sharptongue, which has all the abilities of a sword of quickness and a sword of dancing.

Realm

World Tree cosmology

In the World Tree cosmology of Realmspace, Milil resides within the planar realm known as the Library of All Knowledge, which is located on the outer plane known as the House of Knowledge, which he shares with his superior Oghma, and his fellow deities Deneir and Gond. Contrary to its name, the House of Knowledge is a wilderness of ancient oaks and clear blue pools. At night, constellations of burning stars fill the sky, and the sound of harps echoes through the lonely woods. The Library of All Knowledge itself is housed in various buildings scattered throughout the woods. Together, these buildings house examples of every known spell, magical item, song, and piece of knowledge about the entire universe. While each of the deities of knowledge favor a particular section of the Library above all others, none maintain a separate realm.

Great Wheel cosmology

In the Great Wheel cosmology, Milil resides within the Library of All Knowledge, which is located on Brux, the second layer of the Wilderness of the Beastlands.

Worship

Milil is most venerated by bards, troubadours, and other entertainers, but anyone preparing to entertain or speak before a crowd might offer Milil a brief prayer for a successful performance. Those who seek inspiration in a creative endeavor also pray to Milil. Most priests of Milil spend their time learning lyrics and tunes, and how best to perform them on an ever expanding repertoire of musical instruments, both in temples and on the road. They take care to record both original compositions and songs they have learned. Some priests of Milil work as tutors for those willing to pay for tutelage, and serve as judges at bardic competitions and adjudicate disputes between individual bards, bardic companies, and colleges.

In Spelljammer

Milil is a member of the Faerûnian pantheon and as such is considered native to Realmspace. Priests of Milil who leave their homeworld cannot cast mid-to-high level spells in wildspace. If priests of Milil leave Realmspace, they lose access to all their spells, and can only regain access to their spells once they return.
