Overview

Reman Byrrd and his twin-brother Ramen were co-owners of the spelljamming galleon Ravenstar. Unaware of the vessel's true nature, they operated the flying ship as an unusual carnival attraction at the Mooney & Sons Circus, based in Raven's Bluff on Toril in Realmspace.

Description

Reman was a 29 year old human wizard, with willowy blond hair and blue-green eyes. He stood about 5 foot 6 inches tall and weighed 150 pounds, and had a distinct preference for pale colors, such as peach. beige and ivory. It was difficult to tell Reman and his brother apart, even though they always wore contrasting clothes, since their speech patterns and mannerisms were almost identical (though some of their acquaintances believed they did this on purpose). Occasionally the brothers would swap outfits so as to confuse their crew and the other circus workers.

Possessions

Reman wore a pair of bracers of defence and was armed with a staff of striking. He and his brother were also co-owners of the spelljamming galleon Ravenstar.

Reman owned a spellbook, which contained the following spells: blindness, burning hands, charm person, clairvoyance, deafness, detect invisibility, ESP, feather fall, flame arrow, friends, identify, knock, levitate, Melf’s minute meteors, phantasmal force, improved phantasmal force, secret page, sleep, spectral force, suggestion, summon swarm, unseen servant, ventriloquism and wizard mark.

Activities

Reman and Ramen had joined Mooney & Sons Circus five years previously, when they convinced Jack Mooney to take them on after taking him for a brief jaunt in their flying galleon. They have since become the carnival's prize attraction, drawing in crowds who gape in awe at the breathtaking sight of their ornate airship floating above the tops of the circus tents. Reman and Ramen would take turns manning the spelljammer helm for the day, while the other would run the show, as people lined up by the score to ride onboard this magical wonder.

The Ravenstar only operated as an amusement ride during daylight hours, treating customers to a lengthy tour around a city's environs and through several cloudscapes. Occasionally the Byrrd's would offer chartered moonlight cruises, illuminating the ship's railings with several continual light torches, while a bard strolled along the deck, singing. These cruises cost 200 gp and were usually chartered by nobles, city officials, and wealthy adventurers.

When the mood struck them, the twins would occasionally liven up an excursion with illusionary spells of a roc, dragon, or other terrible threat heading straight toward the ship. As the passengers cringed in terror, the vision would engulf the vessel and then simply disappear.

In addition to serving as an amusement ride, the Ravenstar was also used to transport circus equipment and supplies to each new location in its large cargo hold. If the traveling circus was threatened by hostile creatures or other unfriendly forces, Ramen and Reman would use the ship as an aerial battle platform. Despite operating the vessel for over five years, the twins had no real understanding of the Ravenstar's full capabilities, and didn't fully grasp the fact that they could use the ship to travel into space.

Relationships

Family

Reman had a twin-brother named Ramen with whom he shared an apparent empathetic link, as they were able to share thoughts and ideas without uttering a word. They were raised by their father, B'eeg Byrrd, who was a wealthy wizard from Raven's Bluff and who had apparently gone missing under mysterious circumstances.

History

Reman and Ramen Byrrd were brought up on the outskirts of Ravens Bluff on Toril by their father, the wealthy wizard B'eeg Byrrd. Their mother had left shortly after their birth, though their father never told them why. B'eeg spent a great deal of time with his sons, making it clear that he expected them to follow in his footsteps.

Ramen and Reman acquired the Ravenstar shortly after returning to Ravens Bluff after a short stint as adventurers, ony to learn their father had been lost at sea and was presumed dead. Their grief passed swiftly, though what grieved them the most was the unfortunate news their father had left them destitute. Searching through his records, they discovered that their father had squandered the family's wealth on commissioning a ship that could fly through the air (actually, the notes read "through space", but Ramen and Reman dismissed this as delusional). According to the notes, delivery of the vessel was supposed to take place in a few days on a secluded mountain top.

Despite their belief their father had gone mad and had been swindled by a conman, the brothers decided to keep the appointment, though neither of them expected much to come of it. However, they soon changed their minds when a galleon descended from the sky. A hooded figure floated down from the vessel and presented them with a scroll that outlined the ship and its functions, before disappearing into the night.

Having taken possession of the fabulous airship, the Byrrd brothers were now faced with the quandary of what to do with it. While the vessel had obvious value, both militarily and commercial, the twins didn't relish the idea of simply giving it up. As fate would have it, the Mooney & Sons Circus returned to Ravens Bluff for the winter, and the brothers realized that the circus would be a perfect opportunity to market the vessel. Jack Mooney, the owner and ringmaster of the Mooney & Sons Circus, didn't hesitate to offer them a contract, especially after being treated to a brief jaunt onboard the flying ship.
