Overview
The Path and the Way is a polyglot faith that combines aspects of both the Path of Enlightenment and the Way, both of which originated in Kara-Tur on Toril in Realmspace, before making the leap into wildspace. Rather than worshipping a particular deity, the Path and the Way venerates a hierarchical and well-organized pantheon of disparate deities who assume particular duties within what is known as the Celestial Bureaucracy.
While the Path and the Way has spread throughout the Known Spheres, and has been adopted by various spacefaring races, the faith has fragmented into hundreds of sects, each proposing its own interpretation of which deities occupy the various positions within the celestial bureaucracy. Religious scholars from the various sects tend to disagree {often violently) about the true nature of the Path and the inner nuances of the Way.
Activities
Despite the fractious nature of the faith, the priests of the Path and the Way are able to recover their spells in any sphere where the Path and the Way is worshipped, regardless of any doctrinal differences between the priest and that sphere's established worshippers. Thus, a priest from Realmspace, who believes that Ao is the supreme deity within the celestial bureaucracy, has the same spell casting abilities in Greyspace as a native priest who believes that role is occupied by Boccob. A priest of the Path and the Way cannot be cut off from their patron deities, unless they enter a sphere entirely without gods. This makes priests of the Path and the Way popular choices as helmsmen on voyages of exploration or on vessels owned by adventuring companies.
Base of Operations
The Path and the Way spread throughout wildspace centuries ago and subsequently fragmented into several rival sects, meaning that any attempt at establishing a centralized headquarters would be futile.
Each region dominated by a particular school of thought would have its own governing body, and its own place of worship. For example, the House of the Path and the Way on the Rock of Bral is a small, humble shrine that serves as a place of contemplation and enlightenment for local worshippers and visitors. In addition, every Dragonship has a small shrine dedicated to the crew's deities and ancestors, the Emperor of Shou Lung, and the Path and the Way.
Dogma
Followers of the Path and the Way seek to discover the nature and true meaning of the celestial bureaucracy through open discourse and endless debate. This has resulted in the faith fragmenting into hundreds of small sects, as each school of thought strives to impose its own doctrine. Anyone professing to follow the faith will be beset by other worshippers wishing to debate the merits of their various opinions. In the case of the more fervent believers, these debates may accelerate from words to violence, and often these internal conflicts can rival those of the various beholder nations. If the Path and the Way can be said to have a single purpose, it would be the improvement of the individual through contemplation of spiritual matters.
Relationships
Allies
The Path and the Way is widespread and most members are quite reasonable so long as their beliefs aren't challenged. This means that most organizations are on good terms with some fragment of the faith.
Enemies
Only the followers of Ptah (who once had the temerity to state that their god was obviously the head of the celestial bureaucracy) are viewed with suspicion and hostility. The priests of Ptah, on the other hand, view the followers of the Path and the Way as misguided souls, just as they view everyone else.
Members
Followers of the Path and the Way believe in the individual quest for the nature of the celestial bureaucracy. Thus, any priest of the Path or the Way can accept a new member with little fanfare. However, most will not permit anyone to join the religion without first studying the fundamental texts on the celestial bureaucracy, as well as the priest’s own version of its exact structure and the deities that serve within it. This period of study can take 2 to 3 months, after which time the student's questions will drive the priest to confirm them as a practitioner of the Path and the Way.
The Path and the Way is theoretically open to any race. However, there is a strong human bias among the priestly hierarchy (especially humans from cultures similar to that of Kara-Tur on Toril). This bias has only been strengthened by the influx of new members from Shou Lung on Toril. These members are rapidly dominating the political hierarchy of the faith and are making entry by non-humans even more difficult. Nevertheless, there are a sizable number of dwarves, elves, and even hurwaeti who follow the tenets of this faith.
