This gatehouse is lower and more utilitarian than the grander entrances of the High Quarter. It is built of salt-stained grey stone, frequently slick with the humidity that rolls off the nearby river and wetlands. The Marsh Gate is the primary exit for those heading toward the Mistmarsh or the small fishing hamlets along the Selintan River. It is the gate of the laborers—the reed-cutters, the peat-diggers, and the low-status fishermen who provide the city with its cheapest fuels and protein. Because of its location, it also serves as a secondary entry point for the 'less savory' goods that avoid the higher taxes of the Highway Gate.
