The City Gaol is the high-security prison for Greyhawk's most dangerous or politically sensitive offenders. The Gaol is reserved for high-level thieves, fallen mages, and disgraced nobles. It features three subterranean levels: the Upper Wards for common felons, the Silence Cells for spellcasters, and the legendary Bottomless Pit for those deemed too dangerous to ever see the sun again. This is a grim, windowless monolith of seamless black basalt, reinforced with bands of magically treated lead. Its architecture is intimidating, and designed to look like a solid block of stone rather than a habitable building. The only visible entrance is a massive iron portcullis flanked by two stone gargoyles that are rumored to be bound Stony Sentinels capable of animating if a prisoner attempts to cross the threshold.
