This is a Smoking Plant. Since it is inland, it receives daily cartloads of fresh catch from the river wharves. It specializes in salting herring and smoking cod for long-term storage, supplying the cheaper markets of the Old City and the Slum Quarter. The most striking feature is the heavy top designed to keep the interior temperatures low for preservation. The entrance consists of massive double doors of iron-bound oak, usually slick with condensation and salt-grime.
