Scars of Scale and Tooth
The Scars of Scale and Tooth are the dragonborn society born following the fall of Draconia.
The Scars of Scale and Tooth are the dragonborn society born following the fall of Draconia. They are a chaotic government in which different voices try to make themselves heard and gain notoriety as heroes of the people, and sometimes councilors turn against each other, disagreeing on the direction and development they desire for their home, even if the general goal is to become a prosperous dragonborn society. Due to the tenuous stability of the faction and the youth of their settlement, Xarzith Kitril, none of the nations of Wildemount (despite trying) have an open alliance with the Scars of Scale and Tooth, although they welcome some diplomats, like those from Nicodranas.
History
Following the fall of the floating city of Draconia and the brief rule of Vorugal the Frigid Doom over the Dreemoth Ravine, the surviving dragonborn started rebuilding: after the previously oppressed ravenites made sure the draconbloods wouldn't return to their old position—and many, in fact, ended up dying because of their crimes—they founded Xarzith Kitril next to the ruins of Draconia and spent more than twenty years creating their new society. While many stayed, others (like fearful draconbloods or unsatisfied ravenites) moved to the Dwendalian Empire, ending up in a shantytown called Talonstadt, so undersupported by the Crown that it worries their Kitrilian kin, who have sent agents and representatives to watch over the dragonborn refugees there.
Between 835 and 836 PD, during the War of Ash and Light, the Dwendalian Empire and the Kryn Dynasty each tried different approaches to forge an alliance with the Scars of Scale and Tooth, but involving themselves in the conflict would have posed risks. The neutral Clovis Concord, on the other hand, had as of that time recently persuaded the council in Xarzith Kitril to allow their ships to dock on Kitrilian shores, and by the time of the war between the Empire and the Dynasty, emissaries from Nicodranas (sent by Zhafe Uludan) were living among the dragonborn to observe how their city-state developed, and managing to allow some trade between the cities through the Whitedawn Lagoon. Two members of the council in that period had opposing postures regarding the conflict that was taking place in Wildemount: Vermosi Runek desired isolation, spiting the worldly ways of the fallen Draconia; on the other hand, Druvis Koothalok appreciated the benefits of forging alliances with neighboring powers.
At some point before or during the early 840s PD the Scars of Scale and Tooth had kept Xarzith Kitril prospering, and turned their city-state into "a crucial foothold in the Menagerie Coast"; they had also become more accepting with the draconbloods, having them sitting in the council. By then the diplomatic relationships with the Kryn Dynasty were still open, and the Bright Queen Leylas Kryn met with the Scars of Scale and Tooth, hoping to gain access to western Wildemount and establish ties of trade and defense. One of the dragonborn politicians was cordial with the drow monarch, congratulating her for the birth of her Bright Child, and honoring the fact that she had come herself to the city-state, but admitting that the council was too divided to accept the terms the Kryn offered; however, a different draconblood councilor aggressively confronted the Bright Queen, triggering a flashback to a traumatic encounter. In her confusion, Leylas decapitated him, causing one of her allies to beg the Scars of Scale and Tooth to remain calm and promising they would be compensated, pulling the dazed Leylas away.
Notable members
- Druvis Koothalok (lawful good, ravenite dragonborn): He used to be a gladiator who refused to kill his adversaries and was sold to wealthy noble house after becoming famous. He became very respected during the chaos caused by the Chroma Conclave, and due to his morals he has become a champion for the oppressed, as well as a supporter of maintaining contact with nations beyond Xarzith Kitrilian
- Vermosi Runek (chaotic neutral, dragonborn): She is a fervent priest of Kord who earned the love of the people for her sermons after the fall of Draconia, and for the relentless persecution of draconbloods that her followers practice (though she has her detractors); she tries to cement her position as leader of her people, and keep her city-state isolated so it doesn't become a second Draconia
- Troka, the Scoundrel King (neutral good, dragonborn): A silver-tongued individual, he was initially sent by Druvis to Talonstadt, where, with some help, he took revenge for the poor conditions in which the Empire kept the dragonborn refugees, looking after them while his troupe robbed the Crown and confused the authorities, turning Troka into a true hero of the people, which has placed him in a privileged position
