History

The lake used to be part of the lives of local villagers, but at some point before 838 PD a dark spirit named "The Silt" began using its powers to attract people to the lake, devouring them at the bottom, causing so many disappearances that those who did not die left Ria'Doin. The spirit took hold there a while back among the kelp-like seaweed growth at the bottom of the lake, making it its home and an extension of itself.

Also at the bottom of Lake Umamu, in addition to kelp and the bones of the monster's many victims, is a mysterious portal that connects to underground tunnels beneath the surface of Rudius, the Moon of Ill Omen, so that the lake acts as a constant source of fresh water there. This portal was created to deliver perpetual water to the elven city that Bells Hells found, prior to the creation of Ruidus. It provides a magical aqueduct that is its legacy and was never broken.

Days later, Bells Hells and the Mighty Nein met in Ria'Doin and with the help of the Air Ashari stationned in the town to protect the portal, went through it to begin their respective missions on Ruidus to deal with Ludinus Da'leth and the Weave Mind.

After Ludinus and Predathos were defeated it was decided that Ruidians who wished to would be permitted to emigrate to Exandria through the portal in Lake Umamu, so Keyleth and the Ashari worked to turn the ruins of Ria'Doin into a functional town again and point of initial contact for the refugees.
