The name Swashbuckling Adventures replaced 7th Sea as the main brand logo when Alderac Entertainment Group started producing the game as two-system sourcebooks, featuring the company's own "Roll and Keep" system as well as the d20 system, in 2002. The rebranding was designed to reflect the distinction between "Oriental Adventures" and "Rokugan" produced by AEG and Wizards of the Coast at the same time, keeping the 7th Sea mechanics, system, storyline, and setting, whilst also containing material for inserting more swashbuckling elements into non-7th Sea setting d20 campaigns.
The game is set in a fantasy world based on 1600's Restoration-era Europe and places strong emphasis on swashbuckling and intrigue.
