Games that utilize a "level up" system usually denote beginning characters as "Level 1", and note improved performance by incrementing the Level. Therefore, a "Level 9" character is considered significantly more powerful than a "Level 5" character, but only marginally more powerful than a "Level 8" character.

Level systems are known for delivering character improvements/enhancements as "discrete packets" of values only when a character "levels up"; that is, character advance stepwise, not in a continuous process. A character moves from "Level 1" to "Level 2" at a point in time, but there is no equivalent performance of a "Level 1.5" character, etc.
