Aedirn, named after Aedireen, is one of the Northern Kingdoms which lies between Temeria and the massive Mahakam mountains to the west, and the Blue and Fiery Mountains to the east. The kingdom is feuding with Kaedwen about the land called Upper Aedirn or Lormark, depending on the interested party's political persuasion. These lands have been disputed for ages, with Kaedwen laying claim to them as well.

Overview

Aedirn, adjacent to the mountains forming the western border of the continent, was one of the latest areas colonized by humans. Unfortunately, aversion to other races still exists, especially the elves, whose remnants still inhabit the dense woodlands and mountain valleys, including nearby Dol Blathanna. In contrast to it, the situation of dwarves is rather good; many of them live on an even keel in Upper Aedirn, near their homeland Mahakam. [citation needed] Due to its relative proximity to Mahakam, and despite the country's hostility towards non-humans, the capital is home to numerous branches of dwarf banks, including the famous Vivaldi family.

Aedirn is an agricultural country full of ridges and hills. Unchanging, continental climate results in good yields from the many farms, especially in the east, in the area called the Valley of Flowers (or Dol Blathanna in Elder Speech), which forms a real granary to the kingdom. [citation needed] Nearly a third of its territory is covered with uninhabited forests, a source of skins, honey, and wax.

It also has a well-developed industry. In Upper Aedirn and at the border with Mahakam, large amounts of minerals, mainly coal and less precious metals are exploited by Aedirn's mines. In Lower Aedirn, in Gulet and Eysenlaan there are smelters and forges. Vengerberg (which is the capital of the realm) and Aldersberg are mainly known for dyeworks and manufactures of wool and textiles. Vengerberg also has malt mills and distilleries, and is also famous for its esteemed carpets. A tradition of Aedirn holds that if a man kills another, his hand must be cut off.

History

First Northern War

During the reign of King Demavend III, during the First Northern War in 1263, the Aedirnian Army marched south to face the invading Nilfgaardian Army. While successful, many soldiers were lost in battle, and concurrently Aedirn was left partially undefended to the newly established Scoia'tael, who constantly attacked forts and regiments on the road.

In 1267, after the northern rulers meeting at Hagge, Demavend formed an offensive against the warring Scoia'tael, resulting in pogroms against nonhumans becoming commonplace around the kingdom.

Second Northern War

In July 1267, the Nilfgaardian Army invaded the north for a second time, occupying Lyria and Rivia in just three days. Queen Meve fled to Aedirn, followed by Coehoorn and his force of 13,000, including ten armoured companies. Meve and Demavend's forces united at Aldersberg, and at the foot of the city gates, a large battle took place, resulting in a Nilfgaardian victory and occupation of the city.

Following Aldersberg's fall, Imperial troops marched to Vengerberg and besieged and sacked the city over a week's span; supported by the Scoia'tael they slaughtered almost all of its inhabitants and garrison, roughly 6,000 citizens. Hagge was occupied by Temerian troops, Lormark by the Kaedwenians, the rest of Aedirn by the Imperials.

During 1268, a land dispute between Kaedwen and Aedirn caused a conflict known as the Second Lormark War. Aedirn side led by Seltkirk of Gulet and Kaedwen side led by Vandergrift clashed in the fields of Upper Aedirn. Aedirnian side won the battle with heavy casualties after King Henselt's advisor Sabrina Glevissig's intervention which as a result got her executed.

In 1271, King Demavend is assasinated by Letho of Gulet. To seize this opportunity Kaedwen issues the Third Lormark War for Upper Aedirn. The battle enters a stalemate as a curse cast by Sabrina Glevissig causes wraiths and ghosts to surround the battlefield.

If Geralt of Rivia sided with Iorveth: In the end, Saskia's troops managed to defeat Henselt's army at Vergen, thus stopped him from taking the Lormark.

If Geralt of Rivia sided with Roche: Aedirn forces lost their foothold in Upper Aedirn to Kaedwen.

Third Northern War

If Prince Stennis was alive: Following the outbreak of the Third Northern War King Stennis led his people as they fought the oncoming Nilfgaardians. Seeing that defeat was imminent he surrendered to the Emperor, turning Aedirn into a puppet state.

If Prince Stennis was dead: Nilfgaard conquered the already chaotic Kingdom of Aedirn as they pushed forward to the north.

National Emblems

The coat of arms and banner of the kingdom is a chevron of gold and red in black, while the flag is a horizontal tricolor of gold, red, and black.

Military

For main article, see Aedirnian Army.

Lyria with Aedirn issued about 13,000 soldiers, including 3,000 cavalry. In the early days of the invasion 1/5 of these forces were cut off in the forts and fortresses. Part of the remaining troops had been withdrawn to defend the wing against light cavalry and Scoia'tael. The remaining army had about 6,000 men left. 1,200 soldiers and knights were beaten in Aldersberg. The current state of the armed forces of Lyria and Rivia may be determined at approximately 8,000 infantrymen who fought as a diversionary force during the last war with Nilfgaard. King Demavend III was also known as tactical genius.

Economy

Aedirn is one of richest domains in the Northern Kingdoms. It has a well-developed economy, its main asset is situated between mountains that provide state resources. In Gulet and Eysenlaan they have huge steelworks and forging plants. In Vengerberg and Aldersberg, they mainly manufacture wool and weaving and there are also malt mills and distilleries in the capital. Aedirn is also a great producer of pumpkins.
