Arvernien was a region located in southern Beleriand west of the Mouths of Sirion.

History

The first rulers of the region of Arvernien were Tuor and Idril, who were refugees from Gondolin. Their son Eärendil later married Elwing, Dior's daughter and survivor of the Second Sack of Doriath. Elros and Elrond, the sons of Eärendil and Elwing, were born in Arvernien.

Etymology

Arvernien was a Sindarin name.

Nimbrethil

Nimbrethil was a region of birchwoods that lay in the land of Arvernien, on the northern shore of the Bay of Balar. Wood from the forests of Nimbrethil was used by Eärendil to construct his ship Vingilot.

Bay of Balar

The Bay of Balar was a large ocean inlet of Belegaer south of Beleriand, fed by the river Sirion. In the outer reaches of the bay was the Isle of Balar.

Cape Balar

Cape Balar was the small cape that lay to the south-west of Arvernien, and marked the northern limit of the Bay of Balar. On The Second 'Silmarillion' Map, a later addition by Tolkien shows the place name "Ship-havens" on the small bay formed to the east of Cape Balar.
