Bar-in-Mŷl

Ras Mewrim
Residence Middle-Earth

Bar-in-Mŷl or Ras Mewrim was a small headland on the sea-board that lay to the south-west of Eglarest as the southeastern border of Eglamar, a major region of the Falas in Beleriand.

History

Sometime around the Year of the Trees 1149 within the First Age, the Falathrim Elves under Círdan established the Falas and made many havens in Eglamar. One of these havens, Eglarest, was built on the shore north-east of Bar-in-Mŷl.

Etymology

Bar-in-Mŷl is a name in Sindarin meaning "Home of the Gulls", consisting of the words bâr ("dwelling; house, home"), in, the plural form of i ("the"), and mŷl ("gulls").

Ras Mewrim is a name in Sindarin likely meaning "cape of the gulls", consisting of the word ras(t) ("cape, shore") and mewrim, a common class-plural derived from maew ("gull") and rim ("a people of one kind or origin; great number, host").

In other versions

In some linguistic notes, J.R.R. Tolkien experimented with using maewion and maewia as the class-plural of maew before deciding to use mewrim instead. When Tolkien first wrote Essekenta Eldarinwa, he initially named the cape Bar-in-Gwael. The meaning of the undefined element gwael is untold, but there are a few possibilities. Paul Strack suggested on Eldamo that it may be a cognate of the Quenya word vailë ("wind") and thus may possibly be related to the Sindarin word gwae ("wind") . On the other hand, it was also suggested on Hiswelokë's Sindarin Dictionary - The Sindarin Dictionary Project that gwael was an older Sindarin word meaning "gull". The explanation in Hiswelókë was critiqued on Tolkien Gateway, where it was noted by a user that "the assertion that gwael means gull is based upon the assumption that when Tolkien changed the name, the meaning stayed the same". Regardless however, in a later revision on one copy of Quendi and Eldar, Tolkien briefly changed the name to Bar-i-Mŷl before translating it to "Home of the Gulls" and changing the name to the plural form: Bar-in-Mŷl.
