Point Based (allocate points to get skills, powers, etc)

This is one of the systems to generate ability scores for RPG-characters. In this method every player has a certain number of points to allocate to the specific numerical values that represent a character's physical, psychical, social and other characteristics that describe the character in game mechanics. In some variants each score starts with a value of zero, in other variants points are added to a set base number, Often the costs for a certain score are not linear; i.e. the higher the value is driven, the more points must be spent per increment.

This method guarantees an even playing field for all players and allows them to generate a specific set of abilities suitable for their character and planned character development. It works best when each character class a system offers has half or less key abilities from the whole set of abilities where it needs higher than average scores.

The RPGA's Living Campaigns Living Greyhawk and Living Forgotten Realms use Point-Based-Allocation of abilities for character generation.
